Maybe this has already been shared but it is worth repeating.

This is about the Rising of fascism.

@Olivier5,
This guy is a righteous nut job. I tried to listen... I got to the part where he is calling everyone an idiot"

Quote:
Idiot Entertainers and producers create lurid spectacles of sex, violence and gore.

This is "Sinners in the hands of an Angry Socialist"; we heard this speech 350 years ago from Protestant fire and brimstone preachers.

Maybe someone can tell me what his point is?

Maybe or maybe not you can set aside your ideological differences and replay the video and then use facts to refute Chris Hedges claims?

@reasoning logic,
I watched several minutes of this before I couldn't take it any more. When he started with his Puritanical rant about entertainers producing lurid sex scenes, I lost interest.

Maybe you can summarize the rest for me. He starts with insipid moralizing and a disconnected list of things that pissed him off in society. Does he make an actual point later on?

I wasted several minutes trying to watch this video. I am not going to waste an hour just to see if he actually has a point, so please tell me what the point is.

Does anyone else see the similarity with this sermon?

@reasoning logic,
I think you and/or I have brought excerpts from this speech, but what Hedges is saying should be heard by every American, and I appreciate you sharing the video, RL.

This is not the country we were born in.

******* around about Republicans and Dems is over. We have to overturn all the bullshit that is moving us to fascism.

We've practically lost a voice in this country.

@Lash,
What country were you born in.

I was born in the US on the 1960s. At the time homosexuality was considered a disease, we were taught to hide under our desks from commie missiles and restaurants were segregated by race.

Were you born in a different country?

It's an AP guideline for use of a specific term that might not be well-known to the general public. It cautions against blindly adopting a term used by extremist groups to rebrand certain beliefs and ideologies, and suggests to explain what the term actually means and stands for instead.

He explicitly says "Avoid using the term generically and without definition."

Nowhere does he suggest that journalists should no longer report names, quotes, and facts. In fact, he specifically says "when writing on extreme groups, be precise and provide evidence to support the characterization."

How do you get from this that he wants to stop journalists reporting names, quotes, and facts? What do you base this on?

I was reading back over this thread today, and I'd missed your question.

I feel pretty confident that you know my point of contention is that a journalist can add a characterization of 'alt right', or as he suggests a 'Nazi.'

If I agree with a couple of things Milo Yiannopolous says, can a 'journalist' refer to me in a news article as a Nazi?

It's fucked up. Why can't they rely on facts and quotes and let readers do the characterizations?

It sounds like guilt by false association. They are attaching the label "alt-right" to people they don't like... whether the term fits or not.

Exactly, Max. A shoddy trick the cheese-eaters routinely resort to.

These fake news guy can't just report the facts. They have to alter/embellish them with a shitload of subjective adjectives and characterizations, chosen by them and designed to tell you what to think, not what the facts are.

Cheese-eaters devour that slop by the truckload.

Their stock-in-trade is abstract generalities which abound with false equivalencies, not facts, eh?

@maxdancona,
When someone calls me a racist or something else which I am not, I just rebut them, period. If someone is called "alt-right" and finds it offensive or innacurate, he's welcome to explain how he differs from the alt-right...

Or are you saying that there should be a thought police specially dedicated to journalists?

Are you saying a private conversation and a public narrative by a journalist are considered equal under the law?

I'm saying there's such a thing as free speech. Tough luck if you don't like it.
