The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced it will kill hundreds of threatened desert tortoises it's been caring for at a Nevada conservation facility.

Federal funds are running out at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center and officials plan to close the site and euthanize hundreds of the tortoises they’ve been caring for since the animals were added to the endangered species list in 1990.

Ya can't let cattle graze on federal land because they might step on a turtle, the BLM says, eh?

When ya pay $1,000 to round up a horse to sell for $10 (with $5,000 discount for free shipping), then ya can understand why they might be short of money for turtles, eh? Aint federal bureaucracies great!?

@layman,
Well now, isn't that odd? Restricted development in the Sonoran Desert part of the Southwest on hold because it might, just might harbor a few Mexican Spotted Owls, and they're going to euthanize a bunch of desert tortoises.

@roger,
Yeah, I especially like the use of the word "euthanize," eh, Rog? Euthanasia is basically a "mercy killing" implemented to circumvent an extremely painful death by incurable disease, eh?

I mean, like, they coulda just turned the poor little critters loose, eh? Put them back in their homes, where they were before they were rounded up to be put in turtle death camps, ya know?

This aint "euthanasia." It's turtle genocide, I tellya!

@layman,
After further thought, I think we might oughta put a bug into the EPA's ear about what's going on at BLM. You know, the same EPA that flooded the Animas River here with contaminated mine waste. Of course, they didn't call it a flood. It was a leak. Same as BP calling their blowout in the Gulf of Mexico a leak.

From Tampons to French Vanilla Creamer: Armed Oregon Militants Update Their Occupation Wish List
The armed group occupying the refuge has given no indication that they will be leaving soon.
By Tom Boggioni / Raw Story
January 10, 2016

One week into their uninvited stay at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the armed group that has occupied the refuge has given no indication that they will be leaving soon, posting a wish list of items they have requested from their backers.

Despite the fact that the local “safety committee” founded by leader Ammon Bundy has asked them to leave, the list — posted on social media — indicates that they are in it for the long haul, with requests for bedding, throw rugs, shelving units to store food and ice chests.
Previously, the occupiers were mocked for their requests for “snacks,” indicating a short stay, but the new list has expanded to food item staples including eggs, flour, coffee, hamburgers and hot dogs, french vanilla creamer and assorted condiments including Miracle Whip.

Apparently many of the militiamen rushed to Oregon to help hold the refuge without packing properly for freezing temperatures, as the list also asks for boots, socks, thermal underwear, snow pants, warm blankets and sleeping bags.

Personal care items requested include body wash, shampoo, tampons, shaving cream, razors and deodorant.

Complete occupier wish list below, posted to Twitter by extremism analyst J.J. McNab:

Broke, unemployed and on disability: Here’s how the Oregon militants can afford to play ‘patriot’

As the militia stand-off in Oregon comes up on one week, speculation turns to the financial resources that allow men to up and leave their jobs — reportedly for however long it takes — to take an uninvited stand for freedom in an empty bird sanctuary.

According to experts who study right-wing movements, militia members barely get by, with some living on government disability checks and the earnings of their neglected wives.

In an interview with the Oregonian, Mark Pitcavage, who has studied far-right movements for 22 years, said most militia members live hand to mouth.

“These guys are broke,” he said. “Right-wing extremists, generally speaking, have very little money.”

And these fools will be the first to cry "SOCIALISM!" at the very thought of helping minorities in any way.

Badass Whines He Can't Fight Big Gov in Oregon Because He Hasn't Received His Government Check Yet

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CX5ynUXUsAE3zYf.jpg

You know that feeling when you want to overthrow the oppressive federal government, but you can’t afford it until that same oppressive federal government sends you your disability check? This right-wing patriot sure does!

Among the thousands (upon thousands) of delusional anti-government comments the Bundy Ranch Facebook page has gotten in support of their violent takeover of a Oregon wildlife refuge to protest the punishment of convicted arsonists comes this gem from a bona fide right-wing nut job, who is chomping at the bit to grab his gun and join the cause — if only he could afford it.

You read that right, Daniel Brewer here can’t spend the $300 he estimates he’ll need to get to Oregon because the government hasn’t sent him his disability check yet. Instead, he sends his “prayers” to the Oregon militia and instructs them to go down shooting in a firefight with law enforcement.

First identified by blogger Jim Wright of Stonekettle.com, the comment perfectly illustrates the absurd delusional fantasy the anti-government extremists manage to live in. It may be fun to pretend you and your warm gun can take on the big bad government, but you like the benefits that same government gives you – in this case, a literal check every month so you can get by.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen right-wingers confused about just what exactly it is they hate about the government. During the ugly healthcare debate, one of the most embarrassing rallying cries coming from those who opposed Obamacare was that the government should “keep its hands out of medicare.” Medicare, you may remember, is a government healthcare plan. President Obama himself mocked the sheer idiocy of these anti-government government users. He recounted a baffling letter he had received from one concerned woman — no doubt told by Fox News that the government would ruin her health insurance — who pleaded with him to not pass the ACA:

“I got a letter the other day from a woman. She said, ‘I don’t want government-run health care. I don’t want socialized medicine. And don’t touch my Medicare.'”

Yikes.

Our hapless anti-government militia sympathizer is, unsurprisingly, a conspiracy enthusiast as well. Scattered among pictures of his family, Brewer’s Facebook page features dozens of right-wing memes and articles suggesting Muslims are imposing Sharia Law in America (they’re not) and calls for Obama to resign (he isn’t).

The conclusion we can draw from this is clear: Many of the people who say they hate the government wouldn’t know what to do without it. They don’t want to pay taxes (who does?) and they don’t like being told they can’t do everything they want, but they sure do love the services “gubmint” gives them.

Jon Ritzheimer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Citizenship United States
Organization 3 Percenters, Oath Keepers
Known for Militia occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
Home town Phoenix, Arizona

Jon Ritzheimer is an American affiliated with the 3 Percenters.[1] He has used social media to declare his opposition to Islam and the Bureau of Land Management.

Early life

A former United States Marine and veteran of the Iraq War, Ritzheimer grew up in Lakeside, California.[2][1] While serving in Iraq he received a certificate of commendation for engaging three suspected insurgents in 2005.[3] According to Ritzheimer, he was discharged from the Marine Corps for violating its tattoo policy.[4] The Corps' tattoo policy prohibits tattoos on arms below the elbow, on legs below the knee, on the head or neck, as well as any tattoo on any part of the body that is "sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-american, anti-social, gang related, or extremist group or organization related."[5]
Activities

Ritzheimer first attracted national attention in May 2015 when he began pacing in front of a mosque near his residence in Phoenix, Arizona wearing a t-shirt that had "**** Islam" imprinted on it.[1] Later that month he organized what media characterized as an "anti-Muslim protest" outside the mosque that drew 250 people.[1][6] During an interview on CNN about the protest, Ritzheimer compared himself to the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence.[7] He later started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10 million which would be used, he said, to either finance his life in hiding (he had earlier alleged "they’re calling for lone wolves to come and behead me") or to challenge John McCain for United States Senate.[8]

In June 2015, Ritzheimer posted a video to his Facebook page. In the video, in which he appeared shirtless, Ritzheimer claimed "hackers have ruined my life", alleging that he was a victim of identity theft by persons who had publicly exposed his social security number and credit card information. He went on to explain that he was also suffering from malnutrition and that his earlier wearing of the "**** Islam" t-shirt was "distasteful" and "stupid." [9]

By September, the anti-government group Oath Keepers reported they were in the process of expelling Ritzheimer from their organization after he suddenly announced detailed plans to "arrest" United States Senator Debbie Stabenow for treason.[10] In response, Ritzheimer said that he was withdrawing his membership from the group. The U.S. Capitol Police, which is responsible for the protection of members of Congress, meanwhile announced they had started coordinating with police in Michigan, Stabenow's home state, to monitor attempts by Ritzheimer or confederates to carry out the threat of "arrest".[11]

The following month, the FBI issued a warning to local law enforcement about Ritzheimer after he posted a YouTube video of himself brandishing a firearm and declaring his intent to confront staff at The Islamic Post, a small newspaper in Hancock, New York, in response to the paper's labeling him as "an American Taliban."[12] According to Ritzheimer, he was contacted by the New York State Police who admonished him not to attempt to cross the New York border.[13]

In January 2016, Ritzheimer participated in the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.[14][15] During the occupation, Ritzheimer complained about people sending him sex toys in the mail, observing that the senders "just hate, and hate, and hate, and hate." In what The Oregonian described as a "tantrum," a YouTube video shot by Ritzheimer showed him pushing boxes of sex toys off a table inside one of the occupied buildings.[16]

Ritzheimer operates an ecommerce website called Rogue Infidel which sells t-shirts and bumper stickers emblazoned with "**** Islam" and other slogans.[17] He has said he supports Donald Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.[13]

@layman,
I wonder where "kingsnake" lives and how he knows that no animals were displaced in order to build his residence?

Why is it that I just can't believe that all of the people who damn developers and cry themselves to sleep each night over the plight of owls, tortoises and tiny fish live in grass huts without electricity in perfect harmony with nature?

I'm not arguing against the general concept of preserving wildlife and natural habitats, and any decisions made in this regard shouldn't be based on whether or the critters involved please human eyes, but somewhere between stopping any and all encroachment on developed land and carelessly rendering species extinct there is a balance to be struck.

The people who want to protect nature from mankind at all costs are in the true sense of the word extremists as this is clearly not a generally held position by Americans.

That might be because you've got such a huge amount of land and such a great variety of nature - you wont miss any species because there are plenty others.
