That's what A2K is alla bout. Ya aint gotta be here very long to figure that out, eh?

I was here at the beginning, helping Robert, Jespah and the others. I moderated and posted here for years. A2K was about sharing, learning, arguing (in the good sense of that term) and engaging with others in all sorts of ways that could be fun and challenging. The vitriol and personal attacks were present (and unwanted by most everyone) but those instances made up a much smaller proportion of what I now see.

When groups or communities such as this one degrade in this manner, then it is time for administrators to intervene - and for members to clean up their act. Justifications don't cut it.

I don't believe in voting people off the island. Because it turns into a continuing cleansing based on ideology.

I do believe in moderation and transparency in its performance. Incivility and trolling are legitimate reasons to be sanctioned. Divergent opinions are not. That's why I like juries and transparent moderation.

Maybe you might enjoy a good tarring and feathering, rail and all, but I like due process and civility.

Yes.

@layman,
You're right about the 'fun' part. But the question is: do we want a mosh pit or a discussion site? I think the poll while fun to contemplate would turn mosh pit.

@Wilso,
I'm with you on that. Online communities pretty much everywhere are having trouble getting this right. Quite a number of news sites, for example, have totally dropped their comments sections. Many others are considering that step. Others, either university-based or site-based are trying to design systems to avoid the known problems and preserve that good stuff (see, for example, "the coral project"). Not an easy thing. But one thing that always does help out is ignoring trolls and not duplicating what they are up to.

Well, if ya ask me, if ya really wanna clean things up, then these fanatical no-laughin commies gotta go, eh? Before they let anyone in, they should ask questions like: "Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the communist party? Do you know, or have you ever known, anyone who was a member of the communist party?"

Where's Tail-gunner Joe when ya really need his ass, eh?

@layman,
Humor and even deceit are both socially necessary phenomena and skills. The trick is to grasp whether use of them is trolling or some species of intellectual cowardice. If one uses them as an adjunct feature to communication and interaction, then that's getting it right. If one, on the other hand, for whatever set of reasons, does nothing but that...

Page after page of this name calling and pettiness in this thread and so many others. And plenty of back-and-forth between posters.

Interesting!

A few pages ago, in response to Robert declaring that he KNOWS people have left A2K because of me, I wrote:

Quote:
What you KNOW, Robert, is that some people reported that they left because of me. And I am saying they are full of it. They left not because I have been unduly rude or obstinate...because I have not been. They left because they do not have the stomach for Internet arguing.

Imagine...people supposedly “driven” from the forum because of my conduct...when stuff like has been written here fills page after page.

In that post, I offered to leave.

Quote:
If five people (not a lot) come into this thread and ask me to leave the forum...I will do it. I will leave for a year...maybe come back next Christmas...maybe not.

No takers yet.

I see that the individuals who have suggested I am a huge negative to this forum...who suggest that I am responsible for people leaving...have not worked up the guts to simply ask that I leave.

Who woulda thunk it?

Fact is...I treat this forum with more respect than just about any of the people who shun me...and who encourage people to shun others. A hell of a lot better than many of the people posting during the last few days in this thread.

Yet they put me on IGNORE and shun me and encourage others to shun me...and claim I am the cause for others leaving the forum. But they do not have the courage to come and be rid of me...to make the forum a better place by having me be gone. I'll bet they will have no trouble blocking me from discussions when that feature becomes available. They like to do things in secret...the way people with no spine usually work.

Offer still holds. People like Timur, ci, Lash, Farmerman, Edgar...some of the others who have me on IGNORE...can be rid of a lowlife like me...and continue with the much nicer group still here.

So…Timur, ci, Lash, Farmerman, Edgar, Setanta, Beth…I just wanted to call you all on your cowardice. You have a chance to make A2K a much nicer place…to get rid of at least one of the terrible offenders. Grow the spine to act now for the betterment of A2K …rather than wait and do it the cowardly way that will soon become available.

Here, you can cut and paste: "Go away Frank, this place will be better without you."

Why that, Dee?

People like Edgar left A2K...and claimed it was because of me. Others, including Robert, Beth, and Snood have all indicated that people have left because of me...because of my conduct...because of the content of my posts.

I am saying that my conduct has been exemplary compared with many people here...included most of the people suggesting I am a rude, unreasonable trouble maker.

Nah...I'm here for the duration...

...unless of course, any of these people who shun me (and who have encouraged others publicly and through PM's to shun me)...finally work up the spine to do something about me since they consider me such a blight on the forum.

I've made it easy. A simple cut and paste.

I thank you and Dee for your thoughts on the matter.

But there is cowardice to be dealt with...abject cowardice...and I am dealing with it the way I must right now. I think some of the rule changes will simply allow the cowardice to be rewarded. If the rule changes were not upon us...I probably would have continued to deal with it the way I have been...in a much less confrontational way.

@Frank Apisa,
Let's see how it works. I've offered my help (I'm a fungi super hero) to Robert. Though I've been writing elsewhere for a long while, there's a certain part of me that thinks of this as home. A pretty good one what with the rapscallions in the basement, the reefer smoke drifting about, and the girls.

Speaking of girls, tornadoes crashed about down in the Dallas area yesterday. The one in this photo was taken from a vantage point merely one mile from Jane's eldest daughter's home

@Frank Apisa,
when you merely shout your mantra over and over and over with no recognizable in-depth substance or baseline information, you are seen as one of those pitiful old street people along I-95 that stand at the Delaware Memorial Bridge toll booths and yell scripture at the traffic.
You are convinced that you have some quality input on one subject in prticular and then, when you feel like emptying your cylinders , you shout insults to people with whom you disagree.

You seem to have no desire to provide anything further WHILE you continually ignore the evidence presented by others .(Your merely Quahog in bold type)
I call you Dr Obvious because your repetitions can be summarized with the old George C SCott line ,
"If we had eggs we could have bacon and eggs , if we had bacon"
People then remind you of the lack of any "substance" accompanying your rants, and then you merely resort to insult, (All the while screaming at folks that THEY were the ones who began the insults).

Like certain other worldviews , you have nothing beyond your opening statement and having said it in bold type a few thousand times, many begin to wonder about whether you need a rest again. I think everyone got your point back in 2005.

I can remember you talking about gardens and life in the city. These used to be an enjoyable diversions. LAtely, however, where youve become one of the verbal "Squeegee men" , you raise concerns by many .
