@farmerman,
Gabby had what was left of his teeth removed to appear more authentic. Now that's dedication. If I remember correctly, you spent some time in Maryland (going to school?), and I'm guessing you can recognize the Baltimore accent. I have lived here practically all my life and I cannot do a decent baltimore accent. My cousins can turn it on and off and we all laugh our butts off, but people in Raleigh won't have a clue why we think it's funny. On the Baltimore-Washington Parkway as you enter the city limits there is the usual sign "Welcome to Baltimore", and for years unknown parties have been adding ", Hon" to the sign. To me it's funny, it's also familiar to my ear. In fact it's hard to not use it, so "here you go, hon", "thanks, hon", "want a sandwich, hon". But it's a verbal thing, folks don't use it in writing.

That explains a lot.

I just find it pretentious, no one else has to be as bored with it as I am. It annoys me so I just put that member on ignore. One point however, I'm not stating that a particular person is ordinary, I think they fear they don't measure up and then create affectations to convince themselves they are special. Like the Goth kids, or people with face tatooes, that's just my opinion.

So, then, there's your proof, eh, Lash? She always scolds me and has put me on ignore 7-8 times now. Purty obvious, aint it? Gawd, that girl LOVES me!

Threaded conversations make for a less simple UI but would mean the world in terms of letting people drag on conversations that only they are interested in without it ruining a topic for everyone else.

@Robert Gentel,
I hope it's not one of those deals where, one simple click, and it repeats an entire prior post made by A before you comment. Then the next guy clicks on B's post, and both A and B's post get inserted before C comments. Then D does the same and it just goes on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and...

Before you know it, 4-5 pages have been et up and the same damn posts just keep getting repeated over and over. Eventually, at some point, Person M will hit that button one last time to say "I agree" (meaning he agrees with L, the last of about 15 posters quoted), and it finally dies a natural death.

Even if I could fully explain it, I wouldn't try.

To elaborate a little, Lawdy, my language, such as it is, is what it is. If you think it's "silly," then it's silly. If someone thinks it's pretentious, then it's pretentious, and so on: If bullshit, then bullshit. If stupid, then stupid. If ignorant, then ignorant. Boring, annoying, juvenile, whatever, ya know?

I wouldn't ever try to tell anyone what it is. It would be futile. They already know what it is, and I could never tell them any different, know what I'm sayin?

I'll grab this occasion to tell a joke I recently told in another thread:

Some candyass shrink is giving a "Rorschach test" to some hapless perv. Frame after frame after frame the guy "sees" mammals, human or otherwise, engaged in every imaginable variety or sexual activity.

Finally, the shrink says: "You think about sex a lot, don't you?"

The guy says: "Me!? You're the one carrying around pornographic pictures and showing them to everyone you see."

It's John Lee Hooker, but they probably all look the same to you. It's as realistic as my avatar. I'd be amazed if Layboy was black.

Now this is a perfect example of "asshole behavior" for which there is likely no rule or tech based remedy.

It's a response that completely ignores the substance of the original post and instead selects a completely innocuous quote from that post to use as a launching point for an entirely gratuitous insult.

If this isn't an example of an asshole just spoiling for a fight,I don't know what it.

Edit: So too are the posts that followed from Lordy and Glitterbag who felt inspired by Izzy's to go off on Layman's style of writing.

I'm sure I've been guilty of this particular behavior myself at one time or another, but as a result of this discussion these examples really presents in stark relief, and I will be far more circumspect in the future.

Finally, the ineffectiveness of the Ignore feature in moderating behavior is also nicely demonstrated in exchange that overflows with irony.

glitterbag in her second reply to the same post from Lash wrote:

Note that although glitterbag trashed Layman in posts to at least two other members, she never actually directed any to him. She claims to have him on "Ignore" so presumably she was motivated to comment on him by sight of the posts of others for whom he was the topic of their comments.

And this presents yet another perfect example of asshole behavior ("AB") that I think would would require a moderator exercising judgment rather than applying a zero tolerance policy: Ganging up on other members is certainly AB, and one version is when members "discuss" (AKA trash) someone in a widely joined sub-topic within a thread in which they know the "target" is participating.

If the future A2K User's Manual needs examples of certain common behaviors, this thread is a goldmine.

@Lash,
Knowing that Nazi claims that Stalin was being controlled by Jews are baseless is not an extraordinary ability. There's nothing extraordinary about picking up a book. It's shocking to think that someone who is actually teaching a unit on the Holocaust needed to ask if there was validity in those claims.

You can't get over being made to look stupid. Just stop giving me the credit. You did it all on your own.

It says a lot about your sensible brand of Republicanism if you can't spot such an influential musician. It's not like I've not read any of your other posts. And my "assholish" behaviour has never included attacks on your family members.

For the record, I didn't see any of those comments as being "belligerent." If five people disagree with me, I have no problem with 5 people saying so: I wouldn't call that "ganging up," per se.

But, I do know the exact type of behavior you're talking about, Finn. It's when the ganging up is simply abusive invective designed to demean, etc., that I get disgusted. It's all so chickenshit, ya know?

And the hits keep coming.

Here is another fine example of AB:

The fallacious allegation intended to impugn the character of one member before a wider audience of members.

Despite numerous requests and demands that Izzy offer proof of his allegation, none has every been forthcoming...absolutely nothing.

The fatuous response has always been "I won't do your research for you."

There are real masters of this loathsome tactic in this forum, and should I ever form a community on the future A2K such a thing will be grounds for permanent banning.

Did I miss something? I don't think I've called anyone an 'asshole', I don't even think you are a proper 'asshole'. Why don't you just put me on ignore, it won't hurt my feelings.

@layman,
As Robert has noted, the reaction to the AB by the "target" is not a litmus test for determining whether or not it is AB.

If you didn't see them as belligerent, it may be that you have been desensitized by all of the obviously vicious attacks. Regardless, I assure you they were not simply discussing the characteristics of an interesting new test subject.

@glitterbag,
And I've not called you an asshole. I am noting examples of behaviors found here on A2K. This is within the confines of the topic at hand. That you have been involved in these behaviors is indisputable. Whether or not they constitute the sort of behavior that can be branded "asshole behavior" and may require moderation is, of course, subject to debate.

@Finn dAbuzz,
He thinks it's funny to make **** up, attribute it to members, and repeat it as fact.

I guess maybe creating a fun izzy narrative among those of us he's feted in such a manner and then broadcasting it through the pages is one response option.

Taking the high road hasn't been as satisfying as one might imagine.

I always remember what my Mama done told me. Because she done told me to, see?
