It's John Lee Hooker, but they probably all look the same to you. It's as realistic as my avatar. I'd be amazed if Layboy was black.

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 ā€“ June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was born in Mississippi, the son of a sharecropper, and rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi Hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930sā€“1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie style. Some of his best known songs include "Boogie Chillen'" (1948), "Crawling King Snake" (1949), "Dimples" (1956), "Boom Boom" (1962), and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" (1966) ā€“ the first being the most popular race record of 1949.

Roger Mellie ("The Man on the Telly") is a fictional character featured in Viz magazine. His catchphrase is "Hello, good evening and bollocks!", satirising David Frost's catchphrase "Hello, good evening, and welcome". The character first appeared in Issue 6 in July 1981 and (like many others in Viz) is foul-mouthed, an obnoxious misogynist who manages to maintain a career as a television presenter. He is shown working on various TV networks and channels, the fictional Fulchester Television (FTV) and the BBC being his primary employers. He is the ostensible author of Roger's Profanisaurus (ISBN 1-902212-05-3), a parody of Roget's Thesaurus.

@layman,
Maybe because you play just that little bit too hard at it most of the time?

I feel that you're trying to emulate those jive talking dudes on Airplane for some reason or other,

Heh, Lawdy, seems like your conclusion is your premise, and vice versa, eh? Any reason for the premise?

@layman,
I am intrigued as to why you do this, layman?

To my British senses, when you type in a silly manner like this, you tend to come across as a cross between a weird Rooster Cogburn and James Brown.

Then in other posts you avoid the silliness atogether and one could be forgiven in thinking that you were a reasonably intelligent and sensible adult.

Very odd behaviour. Maybe you think it is a point scoring tactic for some strange reason.

It's all just plain old "American" to me, Lawdy. I change the words I use at different times for a variety of reasons. Even if I could fully explain it, I wouldn't try.

But I can assure those who might be "concerned" that it's not done for malicious reasons.

For what it's worth, I don't consider either James Brown or Rooster Cogburn to be unreasonable, unintelligent, or nonsensical as you apparently do.

@Lordyaswas,
It's just odd, I don't know why anyone would choose to communicate as if they were a blend of Gabby Hayes, Walter Brennan and L'il Abner. But the novelty wears thin quickly. Perhaps the unvarnished individual is just so ordinary he resorts to gimmicks to appear interesting.

@layman,
Very odd, none the less.

One would be forgiven in thinking that you were trying to appear a bit more 'street' than the person you are trying to goad or whatever the hell it is that you are trying to do half the time.

Can I make it quite clear that I am not one of your 'homeys' and would prefer it if you just wrote sensibly and coherently when you are on a2k.

Just a request, layman.

Ooh, good point scoring attempt.

Neither Rooster Cogburn nor James Brown are/were unreasonable or unintelligent in my opinion.

A twit who tries to write in such a fashion may be, though.

Sure, I'm always open to suggestions or requests, even if I don't always adopt them. You will forgive me if I fail to do so in this case, I hope.

@glitterbag,
I used to do a really great Gabby Hayes and I would use it whenever I had to introduce speakers . However, It only worked when the audience was entirely North American (Canada and USA). Otherwise it would be received as if I were being somehow racist.

Black , urban, or hillbilly accents dont translate well in print. Nor do they travel. I recall on A2K when I was using my own hillbilly/farmer accent (not ta menshin mah famus Nawlins haint). I dicovered that it wasnt travelling to Australia very qell. SOOO I quit it entirely.

@glitterbag,
So the pervasive ill infecting so many lately and compelling them to denigrate others seems to be a belief that you are extraordinary, and do not like finding yourselves among the ordinary.

That explains a lot.

I was surprised at the tone of responses to Layman's manner of speaking when you offered a plausible explanation.

I'm pleased you didn't want to fight about it.
