I believe I have (with one exception in hears) been completely civil here. I attack ideas, not people and I defend my ideas on a variety of topics without name-calling or personal attacks.

Most of the personal attacks don't bother me as much as annoy me. But they are bad because they shut down interesting discussion (perhaps that is the point). The only time I have really been angry is when Izzy went after my children (honestly that pissed me off a bit).

In my opinion, if everyone discussed and even attacked ideas without personal attacks and name calling, this would be a much better place.

But maybe the answer is to say "**** civility" and just hit back in kind....

This actually was the first time I saw Hawk state his case as emphatically as he did...and I consider his position to be disgusting, lacking insight, and reprehensible.

If there were no market for child pornography...DEMAND for child pornography...there would be no child pornography.

To suppose that people who view it...who, in effect, help create a DEMAND for it, are not in large part responsible for it...is apparently just rationalization for taking part in that DEMAND.

I guess Hawk likes to view child pornography...and wants to feel that doing so does not help create the DEMAND for it that in turn creates the creation of it.

I am a VERY liberal person when it comes to sexual freedom...but I draw the line at people who take advantage of the very young.

Hawk if free to disagree...and I am free to call his disagreement among the most disgusting, reprehensible conduct I can imagine.

I may not agree with Izzy in many of his outbursts...even some of the outbursts he has with Hawk...

...but on the question of child pornography, I am with Izzy one hundred percent in his condemnation of Hawk.

if you act with civility and some one shits on you or your ideas, how in the end does that affect you, unless you let it

i'm lucky in some respects, i have no real passion for anything that matters, i pick no sides in politics (though the conservatives are endlessly amusing with their foibles, the democrats are rather pathetic in the amusement realm), no religious belief of any kind and when it comes to social issues i deal with those in real life

this leaves me free to dick around on the interwebs with impunity

Well...maybe you should.

Perhaps it is just because I am a small guy...but very early on I discovered if I let people who were bigger than me (which was almost everyone) pick on me without retaliating...I was going to get a lot of ass kicking.

I decided that was not going to happen.

If someone starts something with me here in this forum...I will give back as good as I get. I try not to start things...but I am an effective counter puncher...so when something does start, I react.

I don't see anything wrong with that...although I understand there are intelligent people who suggest it is better to just let things go.

as a smaller guy i learned to be a chameleon and a smartass, throughout school i was able to mix in with pretty much every group in the school, though i rarely hung with the jocks, because, well let's face it, they were jocks

It seems to me that things are much worse now then they were in the past. I remember having really interesting discussions with Sozobe and Dyslexia... people who enjoyed and inspired intelligent conversations and who were okay when you disagreed with them.

Of course, it may be me that is changing... (I am getting older and more cranky in general).

Well, I can take a hint, you guys need purity of essence and reinforcement of your "beliefs". Sorry I cant help you out. I sometimes hve four or five conflicting views in my head and they all sound good every so often.

As far as I know, I'm only a real shithead to you-know-who. Well, maybe one more a little. Sometimes. But not seriously. Well, not too seriously. Anyhoo, I try to match every shithead post I make with some humor or frivolity in another thread. Would hate to be one to drag the forum down.

the political scene is especially polarizing (especially in the US), way more than i remember it in my 50 odd years on the planet, there was always dissent between the groups, but this new uber patriotism that started with Reagan and has grown even more bizarre in the fallout from 9/11 makes any reasonable discussion almost impossible

Adults abused as children who had the abuse filmed often speak about how they are reminded of, (and to a certain extent forced to relive,) that abuse when they find that people are still viewing it on the internet.
