When May I Shoot a Student?

This op-ed in the NYTimes this morning by Prof. Greg Hampikian, Boise State University in Idaho, has written a must-read masterpiece of weaponized snark. The Idaho legislature has a bill pending that would allow students on campus to carry guns. A taste...

BOISE, Idaho — TO the chief counsel of the Idaho State Legislature:

In light of the bill permitting guns on our state’s college and university campuses, which is likely to be approved by the state House of Representatives in the coming days, I have a matter of practical concern that I hope you can help with: When may I shoot a student?
...

I have had encounters with disgruntled students over the years, some of whom seemed quite upset, but I always assumed that when they reached into their backpacks they were going for a pencil. Since I carry a pen to lecture, I did not feel outgunned; and because there are no working sharpeners in the lecture hall, the most they could get off is a single point. But now that we’ll all be packing heat, I would like legal instruction in the rules of classroom engagement.
...

I assume that if a student shoots first, I am allowed to empty my clip; but given the velocity of firearms, and my aging reflexes, I’d like to be proactive. For example, if I am working out a long equation on the board and several students try to correct me using their laser sights, am I allowed to fire a warning shot?

Wonderful read, worth going to KOs and NYT.

But the peaceful event was interrupted by an enraged UCSB professor of Feminist Studies Mireille Miller-Young. The professor attacked a female pro-lifer, 16-year-old Thrin Short, and snatched the pro-life sign from Short’s hands. Miller-Young then carried the sign off through the campus, flanked by her radical feminist students.

@bobsal u1553115,
I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of this article? It doesn't add anything to the gun debate.

@Baldimo,
Look at the thread tags. This guy has to spread the message that has overwhelmed this forum. Liberal and progressive propaganda.

I thought it was a terrific article...well crafted...and on the button.

I had read it before online...but thanks for posting it.

The more perplexed some of these people are...the more certain you accomplished your goal! Wink

@Frank Apisa,
What is perplexing, is that it makes no sense. He is taking outlandish thoughts and trying to make a point about guns. Like I said it makes no sense.

It has no basis in logical thought.

It honestly does, Baldimo.

It is using satire to make an important point.

He is trying to show just how absurd the gun situation has gotten in Idaho.

Apparently the editors of the New York Times, Bobsal and I have all been able to see the point...to see that it makes sense...to determine that it is no absurd...and that it most assuredly does have a basis in logical thought.

You might want to reconsider your take on it.

@bobsal u1553115,
Now if you had some guns and crackheads in the picture(courtesy of government checks) you would have what the liberals have done.

It's just another Freedom Hater whining about the fact that America is a free country.

@oralloy,
Oraboy when you say 'Freedom hater' I'm reminded of those small people who mindlessly chant 'Freedom of Religion' when they really mean the freedom to practice religions that are the same as mine.

My modest proposal ---I see a future when freedom means bullet proof armored underwear will be sold at Walmart.

@OmSigDAVID,
Poor black people who've managed to vote without ID very well before now.

Voter fraud is not a problem, therefore any attempt to enforce ID is voter fraud. It's all about stopping people from voting.

The only legitimate reason for changing the conditions of voting are voter fraud. When I vote I never have to show ID. Any attempt to change that is an assault on democracy.
