Heads up to the left: many of those quotes are, indeed, of very dubious veracity.
But come on, there are plenty of verified ones that reflect poorly on him. No need to haggle over the dubious ones.
Set, in case you haven't noticed, I've defended Clinton right along with Bush here. The only reason I brought him up at all was to respond to somebody's challenge to name any other president who has invoked the name of God in a political speech. Bush has enough trouble in his real screw ups without being bashed for his faith.
Yes but his religion is apocalyptic
(Not very insighhtful but I just want to have my name on all posts this AM, )
Thanks c.i.
Wouldn't it be better if God and Allah duked it out so we humans wouldn't have to slaughter each other?
The Japaneess followBuddhism and Shintoism, some are Christians. The Chineese followed Buddhism, Taoism and some other isms. The Indians have Hinduism and Sihks. Many others around the world have other relgious and spiritual beliefs. It doesn't seem to deter them from slaughter and atrocities from time to time.
OK, here are the two quotes linked above, and the source for both appears to be one person. The first is from the GainesvilleHumanist, the second is from the other linked source.
""God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam [Hussein], which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."
--Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Abu Mazen quoting Bush when they met in Aqaba; reported in The Haaretz Reporter by Arnon Regular

God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.
-- George W. Bush, according to Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, from minutes acquired by Haaretz from cease-fire negotiations between Abbas and faction leaders from the Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular and Democratic Fronts (circa June, 2003), quoted from Arnon Regular, "'Road map is a life saver for us,' PM Abbas tells Hamas" (Haaretz.com:June 27, 2003), quoted from EvilOz (The Iterative Record)"
Your guess as to the veracity of these words, as actual quotes from Bush, would I guess depend on your view of Abbas.
No matter the rhetoric trying to deny it, this is about "My God is bigger than your God."
Foxfyre wrote:I think the 'anybody but Bush' crowd so hates this man they read the worst possible interpretation into anything he says.
Do you really believe this, Foxfyre? Does he do nothing that deserves criticism? And if so (many people here who support Bush in general decry what he has done to the economy, for example), what then?
There can be perfectly valid criticisms that have nothing to do with personal animosity. Lumping them all together weakens your position. I'm sure you'll agree that Bush is no paragon.
Bush never makes mistakes and thus deserves no criticism. Let's all accept this notion of totalitarianism -- Bush himself has said that being a dictator would be much easier.
Is that an actual quote? I would like to hear that one.
Sumac, thanks for your post. As I said before, that quote is the crux of the debate we are engaged in, for me. I have decided that it is just too far fetched to believe a president of the United States could have uttered those words. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm not buying it. If indeed it turns out to be verifiable, I commit myself to whatever it takes to unseat this man and his cabal. Anything, even holding bake sales for Kerry. LOL
That is an actual quote -- you can find it on any sites featuring Bushisms.
Our government, again, is composed mainly of lawyers. Lawyers should not be creating laws -- they are bound to slant them in favor of their own profession. It's a main reason why tort reform is not only so long in coming, it is created with loopholes large enough to steer the Queen Elizabeth II through.
Well, you have to admit, a dictatorship would make things easier, for him.
that one just put some points into my, "1 million reasons to be democratic and counting" book

I don't believe it is far-fetched to believe any President, especially Bush, would blurt out those words or other equally serious foopahs. I would like to see more of a consensus of sources as it would seem it would get more news and be included in more editorials if it was verifyable. I doesn't mean excusing him as he has let the word Crusade slip out too many times and very recently. Right now, it's not the reason I have little confidence in his performance. His running up the deficit in a Reaganesque "What deficit?" misdirection is more damning.
IMO deficits can be remedied in the space of a new administration. A world wide holocaust can be a little more terminal...for a lot of innocent people.
A world wide holocaust? That may be characterized as an elephant in the room.
I agree that the quotes need further verification, but if you've ever known evangelicals or fundamentalists (and I grew up with quite a few) they refer to God's will in almost every sentence. "it was God's will," is their explanation for everything--and this includes successful busismen and politicians. In many ways, this gives them great comfort and I wouldn't deny them that; it is when a president feels he has the power of God behind him and has instructed him personally in his decisions, that I start thinking of moving to Mexico or Canada.
Gotta also add that these same christians use "god's will" when a friend or relative is cured or dies from an illness.
OK LW maybe a rhino, but consider this: how many innocent deaths does it take to constitute genocide....how about a holocaust? Say we instigate a religious war throughout the world. It's a possibility. Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillipines, Middle East, Afghanistan, Africa..etc wouldn't the numbers run in the millions?
The number two Republican in the Senate underwent heart surgery last week. He's doing fine. Nothing was actually wrong with his heart; it's just that whenever a Republican is elected to a leadership position, they have to have their heart bypassed.
