Hello, Clary,
I like your definition of "instinct".
Is French your second language?

Humility is for - other people?

American version courtesy Free Translation:

"We all don't know jacksh*t. 'Cept me. Cuz I know you don't know jacksh*t. But don't ask me how I know you don't know jacksh*t, if no one knows jacksh*t. Cuz that's beyond all of us, see? Leastways, beyond you. Cuz you don't know jacksh*t."

Right?

I do not think it is very nice to assert that "most people, a good example is S., know virtually nothing of how language works", JTT.
As it is, I'd much rather not know how it works and use it, as you said, effectively. Maybe I could show some inventiveness, then...

You'd have to know the history to understand this comment I made, LV. I have the greatest respect for S's  ability to use the language. He uses it in an exceptional fashion. By his own admission, he knows little to nothing of the workings of the language.

This fact further substantiates my point; [not only mine but the view held by language science] that language is a highly complex phenomenon and the rules that drive it are not the simplistic guidelines you see and read in style guides and old grammar books.

Patronize "LV".

Patronize everyone else.

I'd like to know what your credentials are, Mr. Godd*m Smartypants. You're pretty good at patronizing other people here. You're pretty good at shootin your mouth off too. And you're real good at sucking up to Mr. Pinker. (Ain't you never read nothin else, boy?)

So whatthehell gives you the right to say no one knows jacksh*t 'cept you, Mr. JTT?

May be so, JTT. But reading your comment makes me think of those "maîtres" from the 19th century, self-satifiedly displaying how little some young pupils were able to do... Lacks some humanity...
But of course, I don't know the history! Smile
