Choice of name -- Francis -- is certainly interesting. Has it been indicated who he had in mind -- Francis of Assisi? Francis deSales? Francis Sinatra? Who?
According to the LA Times, he's pretty conservative in his theology with a penchant for social outreach. He's condemned gay adoption, but has castigated priests for refusing to baptize the children of single mothers. He's been criticized for not condemning the military dictatorship in Argentina of the latter part of the last century, which shows that he's prefered to stay out of politics.
The guy is missing a lung due to an infection in his adolescence.
Speaking as a former Catholic who still stays in touch with many Catholics (including, of course, my brother the Priest), anyone who expects any real changes in the Church must also believe it is easy to steer an iceberg.
