Actually, it was the Canon Law .... and the law of the Papal State, where Mortara lived. And by this law it wasn't allowed for a Catholic to be raised be Jewish parents.

@Frank Apisa,
By the way...that north/south thing is another instance of the discomfort going both ways!

@Walter Hinteler,
In that case ... Jesus' parents could have been arrested?

@Ragman,
The man we know as Jesus of Nazareth had absolutely nothing to do with establishing the Catholic -- or any other so-called 'Christian' -- cult. That was Saul of Tarsus aka Saint Paul.

How is that so if Jesus was a Jew?

No. He didn't live in the Papal State and Canon Law didn't exist at that time (as the Papal State didn't exist then).

[The first part of whAT was later called Canon Law, Decretum Gratiani, was 'published' around 1140. The Papal State was 'founded' in 754.]

Thanks Foofie,
Maybe I am misreading the question, but I don't understand very easily what it would mean to have contempt for a belief.
If you have contempt for it, why believe it?
If you meant having contempt for a teaching or a practice, I guess my thoughts run in pretty much the same direction. If your religion is asking you to do something that your conscience is desperately rebelling against, you should put some serious examination into why you are following along (with that particular practice/teaching).
Maybe ask outside (of the religion) perspective on it.
Get a second opinion, like you would do for a doctor.

@Lustig Andrei,
I have heard it reasonably argued that Paul was perhaps the most influential figure in not just Christianity, but in most of the direction down which Christian influenced Western Civilization progressed. The fervor of a "convert".

@MattDavis,
Good old Paul who anti-sex hangups had resounded in the Christian faith for 2000 years and had make women second class citizens to this day in large sections of that faith community.

@MattDavis,
aul was merely fortunate enough to have his religious "sample case" as he traversed that boundary line from the Levant into what would be Europe.

All the rest is marketing

He was a civis romanus and simply took the Roman Law as the norm for what is right and just. (Very similar today when US-Americans think everyone should follow their laws from 1787.)

@farmerman,
Mythology is very powerful, from a historical perspective, more powerful than any flesh and blood reality. Paul was obviously influential quite early in what developed into "Christianity". All of the earliest (chronologically) "Christian" texts are of letters ascribed to Paul.
