Why is this news? Actually, I think it has been common knowledge for some time. But, to me it shows the hypocrisy of the 50s and 60s. On a personal level it really doesn't matter to anyone except Jim himself and those close to him. But to admit that a character on the Andy Griffith show that represented the pure and untainted America was gay? I guess Gomer wasn't gay, just the guy who played him. Which shows how unreal the whole thing was. But I knew it was television all along.

Prior to encountering this thread, the only thing I knew about him was that Marge Simpson had an apron that said, 'Jim Nabors is way cool.'

When I read about this,the big surprise for me was that that Jim Nabors had been living in retirement in Hawaii. Just imagine -- Jim Nabors was my neighbor and I didn't know it!

Yeah really. I mean, who cares if Kathy Griffin is gay?

I certainly don't. The fact that she is a talentless skank is enough for me.

NEWS FLASH: Jim Parsons who plays Sheldon on Big Bang Theory is gay, the actor who played Niles Crane on Frasier is gay, so is the guy who played Bulldog.

Does it really matter who is gay and who isn't gay? I'm sure we could go on for pages about who is gay in the entertainment industry, but what does it matter?

@Baldimo,
John Wayne was gay, they just set him up with beards to maintain his dukeness

His gay side was a topic of conversation in those days. There was a rumor that he and Rock Hudson were more than just friends, whether true or false.

@farmerman,
Now you've gone too far. Somethings are funny and somethings just are not, and joking about John Wayne's sexuality is not funny.

If he were alive today I would urge him to shoot you.

@Baldimo,
If it doesn't matter, then why go over a list of who is gay?

Yes. And she is in some commercials now on PBS. Sweet old lady, as you'd expect.

I was responding to Finn's comment around the bullshit moves around the GLT arena. I wonder what's CNN's next move to crank up their ratings when the ratings plummet? It's probably Piers Morgan coming out and announcing he's a liberal.

Yeah butt....ya see, this thread is about Jim Nabors....oh, and Merv and Kathy.

Why don't you go start a thread about CNN?

Farmerman, Well, actually, I didn't know about Jim Nabors or Merv either, for that matter. It is interesting to find these things out after years of our parent's idealization of actors they assumed they knew. Here I am, after my mother's death several years ago, learning that her idea of the man was nothing more than her own fantasy, encouraged as it was by his public behavior and the impression he left. It's a lesson for us all, I think. How much do we really know about our heros? How much do we really know about each other? We're fortunate if we learn about our intimate friends. But it helps to ask and look beyond the surface. If we want to know, that is.

Jim Nabors was a very funny man and talented. That I know.

Wow, I knew about Jim Nabors being gay before I could drive a vehicle, and I just turned 54.

Come on Lola, stop taking this so seriously with the "look beyond the service" and "what difference does it make" It's kinda cliche.

It's all just good natured fun, no disrespect to Nabors. (or to you by the way....just seemed obvious to me this is a pretty light hearted thread.)
