@spendius,
Sorry even without the militia supported in invading Canada, but for General Hull being one of the worst generals in US military history Canada would have been no more as a nation.

Canadians got lucky as every break possible came their way in the 1812 war.

Yes indeed the same wimps under Jackson that destroy the large British forces attacking New Orleans at the end of that same war.

Rumors have it some of those Brits are still running 200 years later. Laughing

Yeah--straight at Hitler despite your ambassador's advice. Us and the Russians exhausted the bastard and you drove in to scavenge the battlefield.

I'm exploring what was meant by "militia" when the 2nd was agreed.

Why do you use "large" to decribe the British forces. Was it to depict the victory as being more valiant?

Most of the British forces were busy elsewhere. And what forces there were were a long way from home. And Jackson snook up at night when the British were all resting in camp, a sight for sore eyes I can tell you, which was the agreed gentlemanly code at the time.

@spendius,
Just imagine boys if we had done a deal with Hitler as your ambassador advised and he had united Europe with all that science and all and complete control of the cheap oil supplies.

@oralloy,

The poll tax would be unconstitutional even if not specifically mentioned, so long as the right to vote were protected by the Constitution.

If that was the case there would be no need for the amendment.

Quote:
The Second Amendment prohibits taxes on military weapons bought and owned by militiamen.

The second amendment says nothing about taxes. It also says nothing about whether the government can register the weapons. In fact the founders were just fine with a gun census.

Quote:

Either the Second or Ninth Amendment (take your pick) prohibits taxes on guns suitable for self defense.
If that was really the case then the 14th would mean states couldn't charge sales tax on guns. Funny thing is, most states do charge sales tax on guns even Texas

My my they was large compare to the forces Jackson had to deal with them part of the so call best train and equipped. military in the world at that time who had it head handed to it by very irregular forces under Jackson.

Next the main battle outcome have little to do with the night combine land sea harssing raid on the British forces that Jackson mounted as a little greeting to the Brits.

As Jackson stated at the time "By the Eternal they shall not sleep on our soil.".

@spendius,
Most of the Americans on this thread have accomplished a lot, so they don't feel the need to bang on about historical conflicts that they played no part in. BillRM's first, and only, achievement is being born an American. Language is still as elusive as ever, and his social skills are non existent, he's the subject of a restraining order. Don't waste your time trying to reason with him, he doesn't know what reason is, he can't even spell it.

He does demonstrate a condition that afflict a particular type of lummox, an inability to live in the real world. He can't discuss gun control/killings in the 21st Century without frothing at the mouth about George III yadayadayada.

Btw, there was a historian on Melvyn Bragg's Start The Week on the radio that reckoned that both the Canadian and American militias were very good at defending, but not so hot on attacking. Not that any of that is at all relevant to this thread.

Yes, but he is the chosen one... he's our president.

@izzythepush,
Izzy until the period after WW2 when you allowed the little old women both male and female little old women take charge of your nation you had a lot to be proud of also.

Your country is a useful warning however of how fast a great nation can fall from that position and standing in the world.

At the moment Americans do not need to look only at the rear view mirror when it come to having pride in our nation.

The American War of Independence was a notable victory of determined yeomen British settlers against a German king and his mercenary army, while the duplicitous French kept the navy busy.

It started a worthwhile experiment in nation-building, and we await with interest to see how it will eventually turn out.

Just for clarification:
George III of the United Kingdom was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland and later King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In Germany, he was Duke and prince-elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He only became King of Hannover in 1814.
He was born in Britain, English was his first language and he never visited Hannover (or any other German country).
Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, was the Viceroy, who seated in Hannover.

It wasn't really a "mercenary army": units were various German countries (notably Hesse-Kassel and Ansbach-Bayreuth) as complete units. The individual wages were still "German", the respective states received the funds for the units from the British Crown.

@tsarstepan,
No one is suggesting kids be armed. Use your brain. Faculty members are not allowed to have guns and that is the problem. Schools think that putting up a sign is going to stop a criminal and that is as stupid as stupid gets. If a faculty member or an adult such as me goes in with a gun he is a criminal, ye3t criminals, uh, well, they dont seem to have a problem at all. And of course there are no armed security people, just unarmed faculty. Can anyone see the idiocy of this scenario?????????

@ehBeth,
Criminals love to hurt kids. It's molestation and child murder. When kids learn early about guns they are responsible as adults. I taught kids from childhood about guns and raised four of them successfully, so I can relate.

@Joe Nation,
That is a an evil and despicable thing to say. Then by your twisted logic, pal, every time you take a drink you are responsible for the killing of drunk driving victims. If you smoke, you are responsible for the deaths of cancer victims, and when you break a traffic law you are also responsible for victims of auto accidents. See how that works? Before you say you are not responsible for those things and try to use your hypocricy to defend yourself, buddy boy, I myself am a gun owner, raised kids around guns and I carry, and given the fact that I have never harmed a human being in my life I take very great exception to your false accusations of blaming me and my fellow gun owners for crime we did not commit. Oh yeah, judging by your picture you are a man, which means by virtue of having something between your legs you are also responsible for every sex crime out there because you refurse to be castrated. No fun having your own logic work against you is it?

Here's the transcript--

Q: Do you think the availability of guns is a big problem today?

Dylan: [shaking his head] I don’t think there’s enough guns.

Q: What about guns among kids? Do you think it’s just too prevailing?

Dylan: Toy guns [widens his eyes humorously at the interviewer]. They got more toy guns than real guns, really.

Q: Where do you think kids get these guns?

Dylan: [smiling] They get ’em in a toy store.
