Another major school shooting today ... Newtown, Conn

As the poet said,

O wad some pow'r the giftie gie us
Tae see oorsel's as ithers see us

This was in the paper today:

"You'd imagine Americans already had plenty of reasons to take against Piers Morgan. But it wasn't until he tackled the second amendment that matters got tricky for him. A petition is demanding Morgan be deported because he had the temerity to suggest, in the wake of the Newtown mass child murders, that the US could use a little gun control.

It's hard to resist cheap jokes about Morgan. Indeed, many in Britain have said they don't want him back. But it's the people who brush aside any degree of senseless slaughter in defence of their right to bear arms that are the joke.

The reason God-fearing America is so keen on guns is its unwillingness to face the nation's "original sin". There is a need to feel they were justified in using guns against native Americans, who had no guns, to gain ownership of the land. They need this so deeply that they don't want the issue ever to be mentioned, let alone debated. That's the funny thing about the US – without its deluded self-righteousness, it'd be perfect."

I was just trying to read McTag's response...but it would not show up. The "bump" (even if misspelled) gets the response on board.

A2K has been a bit unstable, but that post has now stabilised on my screen at least. Hope you can read it now, Frank.

The carefully crafted "new" Frank Apisa is even more fundamentally dishonest than the old blow your top Frank Apisa.

In a short generation or two, guns and the bleak fantasy they invoke would devolve into a strange and sickly memory, a dark folklore, like looking back on the Red Scare or cigarette ads or slavery.

I think that an outright ban with a three months amnesty with no compensation, and five to ten for possession thereafter and life for using a gun in the furtherance of a crime, would fix the whole problem.

The idea than gun owners would take to the barricades is preposterous.

You aren't familiar with just how wacko this lot is, Spendi. Look, we all know that god bestowed the constitution on this Especial group of people. Defending god's will is what must be done.

@McTag,
Besides the subject of guns, last time I checked, you brits have limits on freedom of speech, filled with "exceptions" that can land you in the slammer. How's that working out for you guys over there?

That's not any different than it is in the US, Val.

@JTT,
Oh yes, I'm aware of limits here, but the Brit gents, past the pond, have more "refined" limits to better choke the public in staying in line with what the government wants them to say, or else BAM, you're put in the slammer - even for being a wee bit out of line. Don't believe me, just look up Liam Stacy.

@Val Killmore,
But the Brits don't have to live with the sort of gun violence that's rather commonplace in America....even our reporters have to fear getting caught in a shoot-out.

CBS 4 Crew Runs For Cover As Gun Pulled During Report On Fatal Little Havana Shooting
December 28, 2012

LITTLE HAVANA (CBS4) — Chaos broke out in a local neighborhood when a gun is pulled and residents, along with CBS 4′s Brian Andrews and a photographer, run for cover as a search for a killer takes a dramatic twist.

It all started after gunfire exploded outside of a Little Havana pharmacy, killing a local woman. Now Miami Police are looking for a man considered armed and dangerous after he allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight.

Police are calling it a crime of passion. They say Efrain Quintana, 42, hunted down Ariadna Gonzalez Campa, 42, and shot her to death outside the pharmacy on the 400 block of 8th Street.

“It appears as of right now he began shooting numerous times,” said Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes.

Campa, who died at Jackson Memorial Hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, lived in the neighborhood.

As CBS 4 learned Friday night, the victim’s family is on edge because they say if the gunman was crazy enough to kill the victim in broad daylight, he may be crazy enough to come back and try to harm them.

While at Campa’s home speaking to her loved ones, CBS4′s Brian
Andrews was there as a silver SUV, bearing a resemblance to the suspect’s car, pulled in front of the family’s home. One of Campa’s family members pulled out a gun, which sent Andrews and his photographer running for safety. Andrews even jumped a fence as nobody knew what was going to happen next.

Neighbors called police, who came rushing up in the midst of the latest chaos. Is the suspect in the area? Was it him? Does he have a gun? Such questions sent a wave of fear through the Little Havana apartment complex as the gunman remained at large, with the SUV not belonging to the suspect.

I did, look it up that is, but the report I read didn't go into detail so I have no idea if it was a wee bit or a lot bit out of line.

But the law that is British law is just that, the law.

Do you think that it's more refined to have government officials, like say, a president, cow its citizens into staying in line? Say along the lines of,

"You're either with us or you are with the terrorists".

which sent Andrews and his photographer running for safety. Andrews even jumped a fence, screaming to his camerman, "Did you get that, did you get that? Do you want me to jump the fence again? Should I scream communist or socialist as I'm doing it"?

Armed guards in schools won't help to prevent this sort of gun violence that took place on a school bus.

Girl, 7, Sees Sister, 13, Shot Dead on School Bus in South Florida
By Seni Tienabeso @seniABC

One student is in custody, another six are in shock after watching a 13-year-old girl being shot aboard their school bus Tuesday morning in Homestead, Fla. And according to The Associated Press, an unidentified male student is in custody for the crime.

“It’s traumatic, and now you are going to have to question them and ask them what they saw,” said Miami-Dade County police detective Alvaro Zabaleta. “It’s a sad situation.”

Cops walked next to the bus with dazed students including the 7-year-old sister of the teenage girl who was shot an unknown number of times and airlifted to Miami Children’s Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Other officers combed the scene for clues and gathered the students’ belongings.

Police have released little information about what they believe sparked this deadly early-morning incident, which happened about 6:45 and just a few minutes away from the victim’s school. The shooting occurred on a private bus that was dropping off both elementary and middle school students to three separate schools. Police believe one of the students on the bus brought the weapon onboard but have said little, including whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate.

A firearm was recovered on the scene and all of the students, plus the bus driver, were transferred to the homicide unit, where Miami-Dade County police had to begin the delicate task of questioning the students about what happened. The bus did not have a surveillance camera.

Grief counselors were dispatched to Palm Glades Preparatory Academy, which the victim attended.

Jordan Alexander Howe, 15, has been charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed weapon. He told police he found the gun in his home and that he had taken it to school at least once before. He also said the gun discharged accidentally when he was showing it to another student on the bus...

The gun was legally registered to his stepfather, who kept it in a closet, authorities said.

And, in a final ironic coda to this gun tragedy, the allegedly grief-stricken, and guilt-ridden, father of the girl who was killed on the bus, just committed suicide this past Thursday--by a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

America, the land of guns...

Why We Need Our Guns (CHART)
Posted: 12/28/2012

As NRA lobbyist Wayne LaPierre proved during his press conference last week, some Americans believe the only solution to gun crime is more guns. It's well known that gun sales soar in the wake of both violence and Democrats winning elections, as fears of stronger regulations send casual and serious gun enthusiasts racing to the sporting goods store.

And why not? We're Americans, dammit, and we've got exactly two rights: 1) the right to bear arms, and 2) the right to whatever the hell else we want.

Still don't understand why Americans really need their guns? Well, first of all, you're probably a French Communist, and second of all, there are LOTS of reasons... and they're all in this chart below:
