@firefly,
hawk doesn't understand simple logistics, and the fact that many who kill don't show any anti-social characteristics until the act.

He's going to guess who the crazies are, and lock them all up in some imaginary prisons where we have unlimited space and guards.

@firefly,
As if you aren't paranoid, with your talk of how mass shootings are regular in America.

@cicerone imposter,
I'm not promoting guns, I'm saying don't ban them, and just leave them alone.

By the way there is between 5 to 10 millions such rifles out in private hands and only a handful used in mass killings or attempted mass killings over the years so worrying about how many such guns buyers are going to be future mass killers are similar to wondering how many knives or even large scissors buyers are going to be killers.

@BillRM,
Firefly didn't say "worry", Bill, she said "wonder". Given the facts, it's not at all a wonder that you haven't considered it.

@BillRM,
A reminder to all of you future mass murderers out there: In order to qualify as
a statistical mass murderer, your body count must be a least 4 in one location.

Merry Christmas & Peace on Earth to all,

@Val Killmore,
Nobody is talking about "banning guns." AGAIN: Our Constitution allows citizens to have arms. Get that through your thick skull - if that's possible.

The government can set limits on arms. That's also a FACT.

I never hear someone had picked a number of killings for being consider a mass murderer so where did you come upon that bit of information?

Of course there been calls on this thread for a complete or near complete gun ban similar to such countries as the UK.

i believe that most people who are troubled dont need to be caught, they simply need to be tempted with real assistance and a believable promise that no harm will come to them if they both turn themselves in and dont act on their evil urges. the record of europe handling pedophiles this way gives me hope that we will some day get our heads out of our asses.

then I look at the product of the A2K braintrust and I wonder if this is me being naively massively overoptimistic again.

as a economic hobbyist you should have some knowledge that incentivizing desired behavior has a record of success. the stick (law) is not always the best tool for the job.

as per usual your mind is closed, your thinking is superficial and one dimensional.

There are plenty of AR-15 type guns for under $1,000. You get what you pay for of course.

That price were before the talks of a ban begin however and according to a news story I just listen to the price had move from around a thousand dollars to 1500 hundreds already.

That should calm down once people recognize that there is not going to be any ban on assault weapons.

Magazine prices though might be a different thing. It still remains an open question whether we will have a magazine ban.

They already had try a numbers of things in Florida in this very last election cycle.

Pushing up the time needed to caste a vote in a some democrats districts to seven hours but guess what those evil and weak left wingers hung in and voted anyway.

That was just DNC propaganda to rile up their base. There was no Republican plot to keep people from voting. All the Republicans want to do is have measures in place to prevent people from cheating.

I think you might be mistakenly seeing cause and effect where there are really two effects.

Instead of:
Cause: Lots of childish name-calling.
Effect: Unremarkable discussion.

How about:
Cause: House Democrats side with NRA in opposition to any ban on assault weapons.
Effect: Lots of childish name-calling.
Effect: Unremarkable discussion.

But yes. It's over. Another NRA victory.

Unless anyone wants to talk magazine bans alone, or speculate if there will be anything about gun show background checks.

I do not believe the desired precision could be achieved for a few hundred dollars.

We might arrive at the position that if nothing effective is forthcoming Mr Obama's speech at the Memorial Service was designed to make him look good whilst he sold a few thousand more assault weapons.

That's quite a hole for a man to have dug for himself imo. A PM here who didn't climb out of it would resign.

Obama still has a chance of passing a ban on large magazines. Although it is hardly guaranteed; the NRA will fight it.

Also he has a chance of getting background checks for all sales at gun shows. So long as the government is required to conclude the check within 24 hours, the NRA does not even oppose that.

But he won't be getting any ban on assault weapons through the House of Representatives no matter how hard he tries.

Not if those limits violate Rational Basis Review/Intermediate Scrutiny/Strict Scrutiny (whichever of those three that the courts apply to the "limit" in question).
