According to her family, Smyth and Brunetti were friends, but they weren’t a couple, as police have stated. The pair was supposed to go to a cookout the day Smyth was killed.
It is unclear if the two made it to the cookout, but police do believe Brunetti lured Smyth down a trail in Leakin Park and shot her once in the head. He then took the woman’s car and bank card, went to an ATM and withdrew $700 from her bank account, according to charging documents.

UTAH STATE PRISON — A North Ogden man who murdered his girlfriend when she tried to end their relationship will spend at least 25 years in prison.
Bell, 21, pleaded guilty to killing Nichols in her North Ogden home on Jan. 4, stabbing her several times in her upper and lower torso.
Her 3-year-old daughter was in the home at the time
Bell and Nichols had been dating on and off for about four months. Police believe he killed her when she decided to permanently end their relationship. Nichols' parents now have custody of her daughter, prosecutors said.
"Hospital staff began treating the child and discovered significant injuries throughout the body, which indicated to them he had been severely beaten," Stansbury said.
The child, then listed in critical condition, was put on a respirator.
police were informed by the hospital's staff at 2:20 p.m. Sunday that the child had died from his injuries, and the charges against Hamilton were then upgraded to first-degree murder.
Phillipe Ian Gayle (DOB: 07/08/1981) was sentenced yesterday to the maximum penalty of 30 years in prison for killing his 6-year-old stepson, Joshua Jenkins (DOB: 03/19/2001) on February 18, 2008. Gayle was found guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child and Aggravated Child Neglect by a jury in November 2009. On Monday, January 11, Judge Ramiro Manalich imposed the maximum sentence.
On February 18 at 7:36 p.m., Cape Police were notified by officials at Health Park that an abused 6-year-old boy was at their hospital in ICU and was not expected to live. The boy died at 9:14 p.m.
Detectives responded to the hospital and found the boy covered in bruises. An autopsy on Joshua found that he had sustained blunt force trauma, causing multiple contusions to his diaphragm and lungs, as well as a lacerated liver. He had hemorrhages to his forehead and excessive bleeding in his abdominal area. Bite marks also were found on his body.
SAN DIEGO - A man who strangled his longtime girlfriend just hours after getting out of jail for beating her up was sentenced Friday to 21 years to life in prison.
Melvin Lee Carter was convicted last month of second-degree murder, false imprisonment and assault with a deadly weapon for the Dec. 17 slaying of Christina Michelle Jones, who was the mother of his two children.
Pirrello said Carter decided to kill Jones while in jail on the domestic violence charge because she wouldn't bail him out of jail for three weeks.
The day of the killing, Carter's family got him out of custody and he went straight to the Golden Hill apartment he shared with Jones and their children, Pirrello said.
