@gungasnake,
I would have thought that this film was simply another "conspiracy nut" thing, except for this: I have had similar thoughts about Obama for the last couple of years.

I just heard about this film a couple of days ago, when I received an e mail from a friend discussing it. I did a little digging, and then bought the book on which the movie is based, "The Roots of Obama's Rage".

I could not put the thing down. Its premise is that Obama has been raised to have a very different world view than most Americans. He is very invested in the concept of neocolonialism.

He sees the United States, (although we have not acquired any physical colonies in the recent past) as creating colonies by having large American corporations in less evolved countries. It is postulated that, like in the years of physical empires, the United States is using these other countries for its own benefit.

Over the years, Obama has aligned himself with many radical socialist thinkers. The film purports to describe how Obama desires to "level the playing field", to weaken America so that it is no longer the preeminent country in the world.

Crazy? I'm not so sure. But it IS something to be taken seriously given Obama's track record. I am going to see the film today, and will probably have more to say about it.

@Phoenix32890,
This is the problem. Dinesh D'Souza is a heavyweight, basically in the same sort of league as Ayn Rand or Mencken or the like, and what he's claiming is the same thing I've noticed for the past three years i.e. that the only motive I can come up with for most of Obama's actions is that he actually WANTS to take the country down. This is totally new and totally different from anything we've ever had previously.

@gungasnake,
Read the book. The concept that he wants to destroy the US is what is scaring the hell out of me. His mindset is so foreign to anything that most people in the US have experienced, that most people cannot even comprehend it.

One other problem is that the man is very brilliant, and is a master at manipulation.

@sozobe,
Yes Soz, very seriously. I would not have been as affected by the book if I had not had similar thoughts, although they had not been codified.

I am not particularly conversant in the area of the history of colonialism and neocolonialism, so until I read D'Sousa's book, I had little concept of the mindset of many of those who have had the experience.

For me, the book filled in the blanks. I know that the man who wrote the book comes from the very conservative end of the spectrum. Knowing this, I think that there are points that D'Sousa makes that are real eye openers. I think that every American needs the opportunity to at least get some sense of what the author is writing about, and then make up his own mind about the credibility of the writing.

The President is a Black man.

Deal with it already. Other than that there isn't anything that different from any other administration.

Phoenix,

If it isn't racism that makes this stuff so compelling, tell me one thing about the Obama administration that doesn't have a parallel in the Bush, Clinton, Bush and Reagan administrations?

There actually isn't anything remarkable about the Obama administration. Yet these wacked out apocalyptic conspiracy theories only are for Obama?

So Phoenix, you've heard the theories. What is different about Obama (other than the color of his skin) that makes you fear him more than the white presidents we have had?

And for historical context, Dinesh D'Sousa was the guy a few years ago who got air time hawking "The Bell Curve" which was claiming that intelligence is based on race.

@maxdancona,
max- This only is peripherally about race. It is about the mindset of the President of the United States.

To pique your curiosity, here's a few pages from D'Sousa's book. Just click on the book cover to access these pages:

@Phoenix32890,
From your link...

Quote:
This philandering, inebriated African socialist, who raged against the world for denying him the realization of his anti-colonial ambitions, is now setting the nation’s agenda through the reincarnation of his dreams in his son.

This says far more about the mindset of Conservative White Americans then it does about the mindset of President Obama.

Philandering inebriated African socialists..... please!

@maxdancona,
This article was published in Forbes Magazine in 2010. I think that you will find it interesting.

@Phoenix32890,
The article in Forbes was written by the same guy who was ranting about "philandering inebriated Africans" in your earlier link. He just dressed up his racism to appeal to bigger audience.

Same guy. Same racist ****.

@Phoenix32890,
Well, that article was written by Dinesh D'Souza, so what would you expect?
Quote:
... Obama is a socialist--not an out-and-out Marxist, but something of a European-style socialist, with a penchant for leveling and government redistribution.
That's only one of the mistakes ... and the last is given by Forbes on the last page.

@Phoenix32890,
Look Phoenix, you have a choice. You can either lock yourself up in a cave with Gungasnake waiting for African socialists to invade, or you can come out with the rest of us.

We have a democracy. People run and present their policies and their stories. Then we vote and choose one of them to be our president. The system works pretty well in spite of the fact that sometimes I am not happy with the result. That's the way America works. And yes, I really hope that President Obama wins a second term, but either way our system of democracy works and we will in fact be fine no matter who wins.

Barack Obama became president the same way anyone else has become president. In office he has given speeches, signed bills, made executive orders, commanded military strikes just as every president has before him.

These attacks about President Obama's family past are way out of line. Of course you and Gungasnake are free to make them. It is a free country. But they are way out of line for American democracy.

Ironically President Obama's opponent has an equally interesting family history. No one is writing books attacking Romney for his families past.

I think that is a good thing.

The "philandering, inebriated African socialist" to which D'Sousa is referring, is Obama's father. From what I have read, in many places, the characterization of the man is accurate.

I have no fear of an invasion of African socialists. I am though, more concerned about a President with a mindset that will be detrimental to the country.

BTW, I AM with the rest of you. Like all of us I want the US to flourish and grow.

These kinds of attacks are ludicrous, racially-charged and hateful. They are not what helps the US to flourish and grow.

If you are really with us, please stop. I don't care if you support Romney or not, but these hateful racist attacks are not helpful to our democracy.

Please stop???? I always thought, that in a democracy, the ability to have a free exchange of ideas is vitally important. How would exploring
different possibilities be not helpful to our democracy?

I do not consider my "take" on the subject racist at all. Apparently, you think that any criticism of a black person is by definition, "racist". If I am prejudiced, I am prejudiced against collectivists of any kind.

As far as Romney is concerned, I am not terribly enamoured of him, but IMO, he's much better than the alternative.

Maybe we should explore the possibility of stringing up blacks from the nearest tree. It certainly would be helpful, don't you think?
