@hawkeye10,
Hawkeye, why aren't you barking about all the other states that shut down mass transit ahead of the hurricane?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/28/national/main20098379.shtml

Maryland Transit Administration suspends service.

In Boston, the transit authority announced public transportation would be shut down Sunday because of the hurricane.

New Jersey Transit trains and buses shut down.
Atlantic City casinos shut down for only the third time since gambling was legalized 33 years ago.

New York City's public transit system, the nation's biggest, was shut down until at least Monday. The five main New York-area airports also closed.

Mass transit serving Philadelphia resumed bus, trolley and subway service, but regional trains to the suburbs still closed.

@hawkeye10,
Yeah you win, but everyone still thinks you're an idiot. How does that work?

Events proved me right, I win

All you did was agree with me originally. Ive since retracted because the storm was a dangerous ride in the VA to NJ sectors. The fact that it swund a bit to the East near NYC was a result of pressure gradients. DO you think you are Nostradamus or something?

As I said before, you merely changed the subject (and you ignored the data from the mid Atlantic)

The subject is how bad is this storm, how much of a threat is it...which became "how bad was it".

It was not a big deal, the winds we far below claims, the storm surge was far below claims, and the rain was below claims, though still a lot. We have some local flooding in the flood plains and some trees up which in turn causes pwer problems, which happens all the time. There is a real problem with people building in areas that often flood, and they got flooded, again....but I have heard very few reports of any problems out of the norm for a bad garden variety storm system, not much that lives up to the "major hurricane" hype.

@hawkeye10,
Dude, it's a defined term. She was absolutely a "major hurricane".

I think he believes he's Cassandra. That would fit in with his egotistical rantings.

It was never more than a cat 1 while on land, and it was a tropical storm when it hit NYC...

@hawkeye10,
If they hadn't shut it down and even one person was injured due to water in the subway there would be hell to pay. We should probably consider ourselves lucky that our governments don't restrict people to their beds every day lest they be exposed to high pollen counts.

Until our society stops holding government accountable for every storm and every failure to correctly anticipate natural events, then government will react this way. They are a reflection of us, or at least a vocal portion of us.

We shall see how the reaction shapes up over the next few days as it becomes clear to folks how little provocation it took to get government to close up shop. The Gathomist poll is still nect and neck. It will help some that MTA finally got their asses in gear and will open the subways at 6 am.

Parts of the underground system will remain closed due to flooding, including all service to the Rockaways in Queens. But nearly all of the subway’s 22 lines, including express and local service, are expected to be restored, Mr. Cuomo said. Fewer trains will run than in a normal morning rush.

Still, other parts of the region’s mass transit network are likely to remain partially paralyzed for the morning commute, including the suburban commuter rail networks that carry thousands of workers to hospitals, investment houses and corner bodegas alike.

Although the city escaped a punishing blow from the storm, New York’s ability to return to its usual humming self will rely largely on how quickly its lifeblood mass transit system can recover.

Transit is the economic life, the cultural life of the city,” said Mitchell Moss, director of the Rudin Center at New York University. “If you don’t have that infrastructure working, you can’t have a meal, you can’t make a living, you can’t get a prescription filled.”

The consequences could quickly spread around the nation: with reduced transit options to the airports, some airlines said they had been reluctant to restore flights into the New York region. Departures will resume at 7 a.m. at La Guardia Airport, and at noon at Kennedy and Newark Liberty International Airports

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/29/nyregion/new-york-expects-lengthy-recovery-of-transit-system.html?hp

You dont close the NYC transit system unless you have absolutely no other choice, the costs of closing are astronomical.

Quote:
Casilda Johnson, 41, a security guard who had just finished a 26-hour stretch of work at the Manhattan Municipal Building, was walking across the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday afternoon. She planned to meet a relative on the other side who was to drive her home to Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights.

“It’s hard for us to get home,” she said, her MetroCard dangling from a lanyard around her neck.

Speaking of the mayor, she said: “He went overboard this time. You can’t shut this big city down. You’ve got to think of the people who don’t have cars. How are we supposed to get to work, and get home?”
This will go very badly for both Cuomo and Bloomberg if the city citizens decide that a few wealthy snobs with no understanding of how real people live and depend on transit took it away for NO GOOD REASON...
