@Butrflynet,
Ah, Rep. Keating is on MSNBC now saying the Cape is still experiencing high winds and rain and many services are still shut down. Guess we'll wait a bit longer for reports from that area.

It was Cuomo what issued the order to shut down the MTA, not Bloomy.
Yes, but it was a conference decision, and Bloomberg has been selling it too. And Bloomberg is giving them cover to take their time, no doubt to save money. MTA has extremely serious financial problems, and no on wants to come up with more money to cover storm related operations or repair. The more money they dont spend by not running the better so far as they are concerned. They will not get away with that for many more hours though, as the citizens are going to be pissed, if they are not already. They expect better than this, this is NEW YORK for cripes sake!

It is ironic that in trying to avoid the snow storm mistake bloomberg made the same mistake again, not doing his job thus allowing the city to be massively negatively impacted.

@hawkeye10,
How will FEMA pay for Hurricane Irene?

Quote:
With less than $1 billion currently available for federal disaster assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is temporarily suspending payments to rebuild roads, schools and other structures destroyed during spring tornadoes in Joplin, Mo. and southern states in order to pay for damage caused by Hurricane Irene.

FEMA will still pay people eligible for individual storm assistance and some states recouping emergency response costs from previous disasters. But the agency said it will place restrictions on paying for older longer-term public rebuilding and mitigation projects in order to ensure the solvency of the federal disaster relief fund, which pays for emergency management costs and public rebuilding projects.

The decision affects the spring tornadoes and disasters dating back several years and “prioritizes the immediate, urgent needs of survivors and states when preparing for or responding to a disaster,” said FEMA spokeswoman Rachel Racusen.

The federal government similarly suspended some disaster payments in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2010, according to FEMA.

Overnight, President Obama signed federal emergency declarations for the District of Columbia and Delaware, opening a stream of funding to pay for emergency response efforts there. Ten states, the District and Puerto Rico have applied for federal emergency assistance since last week.

Also late Saturday, Obama declared a major disaster in Puerto Rico, a move that makes money available to individuals affected by Irene’s destruction.

The White House is expected to declare similar disasters in other states as soon as today, further sapping money from the relief fund, which currently has about $900 million, below the $1 billion officials prefer to keep on hand.

The shortfall means the Obama administration will soon request supplemental funding from Congress, likely causing another fight over federal spending as a new “supercommittee” prepares to identify trillions of dollars in government spending cuts.

Already House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) has said that any new money for FEMA will be offset by spending cuts elsewhere

Transit chief Jay Walder said the decisions made "were right." As to complaints that the city's response to Irene was merely a storm of hype, Bloomberg said the bottom line was better safe that sorry.
"They should look in the mirror. They are alive today," Bloomberg said

In other words this clown would shut the city down again in a heartbeat, he aint interested in listening to people who disagree with him and he is one of the " IF IT SAVES JUST ONE LIE IT IS WORTH DOING NO MATTER WHAT THE COST" crowd that has done so much damage to America.....

So you're in favour of the Homer Simpson view of restricting speed limits then?

MTA is trying to sell their decision to close up shop with a few pics of relatively minor flooding....Had they operated during the storm only few lines would have needed to close, though they would have needed to put diesels on the NEC, which was possible on a limited basis. The closing all of the subways so that they could plug the tunnels against water was unnecissary...

I know, look at what this thinking has come too...we have a little blower with some rain and the leaders run around claiming that the world is going to end, and then when nothing much happens they come out after and saying that we are only alive because they told us to evacuate and closed up the city. It takes painfully little now to bring America to a screeching halt punctuated with hysterics. We are no longer a can do people, we are victims first , who need to be taken care of. Who said paternalism was dead?...those feminists are proven wrong yet again.

Heavy flooding in Wilmington as well. Bro says he has power but the water is coming up fast. He's on the Huntington River but the house is set back pretty far.

Sure, the Fire Department has been rescuing dozens of people from homes flooded with five feet of water, but now that Irene is starting to veer away from the NYC region as a Tropical Storm, it's not too early for everyone to weigh in on whether the city's decision to evacuate residents in low-lying areas as well as the state's decision to shut down the MTA were overreaction (heck, people have been debating that since Friday). What do you think:

Yes 49.55% (2,354 votes)

No 50.45% (2,397 votes)

@hawkeye10,
Weren't you recently saying the exact opposite about the snow plow issue? Weren't you blaming government for not anticipating and preparing for the worst so they could take care of the people in the snow storm?

Vermont State Police report heavy rain, flash floods and stranded motorists in the southeastern part of the state. Motorists are advised to stay off the roads. Thousands are without power. At least one person has been swept down a river and is presumed drowned.

[Update 5:25 p.m.] The latest information from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center indicates conditions in northern Vermont are expected to worsen or stay the same until midnight, when the remnants of Hurricane Irene largely will have passed.

"Widespread, serious flooding has been ongoing across many areas of southern Vermont," the weather service's South Burlington office said in an advisory. "Additional flash flooding is expected," including for northwestern Vermont.

Qell, we had our power restored an hour ago. PECO sent in an additional 2000 crews so that we didnt sit in the dark for a week like we did for Isabella.
Pwrhaps the warnings and evacs in the southern tiwers were called for after all. The storm in Va through lower NJ was very slow and packed a lot of mass while only a cat 1.
Lots of flooding and tornado damage in DEL was prety scary. This hurricane spawned lots of tornadoes as the "hinge point" where the circulating winds changed directions from NW to SW this set up a shear and spwaned lots of rotation. Our power went out at 10 PM and we had a marine weather band on our crank-up Radio. We had torando warninds several times last night for our area and watches until 6AM Sun.
Its nw a brilliantly sunny and breezy day. The high winds are done (we lost several trees in our woodlot- so ill have firewood aplenty this winter if I get it cut up and split this week)

This was a really intense cat 1 hurricane. it was bloody huuuge and slow. Its one of those where you can only guess at the consequences. I was critical of the hype at first, I take it back.
I see that hawkeye just changes the subject

We just went out for a stroll and saw, maybe 8 blocks from us, a rather large tree down over some power lines.

@Butrflynet,
I saw the weathermen explaining it's not an exact science. Even the finest meteorological minds can't be certain what chance does a fuckwit like Hawkeye have? He's just trying to sound like the he's got a clue, but the only person he's fooling is himself.
