Chinook is the name of a tribe of native Americans, also known as the Flatheads, who fished along what is now called the Columbia River. They were first mentioned by Lewis & Clark, I think. That tribe called the salmon from the Columbia River, Chinook. Their language was the main native language that was part of the polyglot used when early Europeans met with NW tribes, so that jargon became known as Chinook, too.

We get a Chinook wind here in the Pacific NW as well... sometimes called "Snow-Eater." I think of it as a south wind, but I suppose it seems more western by the time it reaches Alberta. Most people like the Chinook, but it can be deadly in the mountains if it warms up the snow pack and causes avalanches.

Chinook Wind

There's a similar kind of wind in southern Europe, can't remember the name just now, where the winds blow off the Sahara, across the Medi to warm up Spain & southern France & Italy. Unfortunately, it tends to bring lots of dust with it.

Right, scirocco. Very Happy Good one, Ceili! We were in one a couple of years ago, in Spain. It was so dusty, the visibility was awful and there was a stink to the air. (People were saying it was the smell of camel dung!) Then there was a horrible rain storm that in one night washed away big chunks of shoreline.

It is funny that a wind could make people jittery, but I can see how it would. I get very grumpy and stressed if it is windy and I can't get out of it.

I've heard it said, that the windier a place is, the higher the suicide rate. I find a chinook pleasant, but it is fairly humid by time it reaches here.

Higher suicide rate? Yikes. Haven't felt THAT stressed. Wink That website also said some people were invigorated, so it must be a very individual thing.

When I was in Point Barrow, where it can be very, very windy, it was sort of fun to go walking on the tundra and then find a place out of the wind. Such a relief to be in a little oasis of calm. One of my Inuit friends taught me how to do that early on. We'd stopped once and she grabbed my arm and pulled me around the side of a very small hill. She must have thought it was funny (and dumb) that I didn't know enough to get out of the wind! It doesn't take much to find a wind break and it is so much more pleasant.

IT"S FREEZING HERE
here is a rather interesting article dealing with WEATHER SENSITIVITY. germans strongly believe that weather influences their health(usually adversely !). the german weather reports have a special section advising people that the upcoming weather may be bad for their circulation, breathing ... i've never seen that the german weather report gives you good health news; the weather almost always seems to be bad for something. to read more >>>WEATHER SENSITIVITY hbg

The Sant'Ana winds in LA also make people very edgy... very edgy indeed. And there was a wind I heard of in my childhood, in the Black Forest? In which people were "forgiven" for homicide? trust me, I don't know what I am talking about there except that it wasnt', I don't think, the same as the scirocco...

Or maybe it was, that would be interesting. I know the sciroccos get to italy and so france...

the hot Saharan winds blow, the sirocco or ghibli as they are known in Sicily and Libya, The heat and aridity of North Africa has always been the motivation for cooks of the Maghreb to prepare cool and refreshing foods. Cucumbers, recommended by medieval Arab doctors for their thirst-quenching effect.
