@Intrepid,
Yeah you, Intrepid. Mischievous & wicked.
I'm sorry you're crushed, but the truth hurts, I know. Wink

@msolga,
Aw. Potential moderators shouldn't make assumptions based on little more than unsubstantiated humour and lack of facts.

No, really. I think you would be a good moderator. If I had a vote, I would vote for you.

If you are successful, please don't forget about those of us stuck in the foyer without a ticket to get in.

Wink

Can someone define the term "academic rules" as it relates to an internet forum for me, please? Thanks.

No sarcasm. My sarcasm is rather raw and you would have no trouble identifying it.

Where have you come across this term?

@msolga,
I'm confused now! Were you joking about wanting to be a moderator? And why are you convinced Intrepid is being facetious?

@Zetherin,
I'm sorry you're confused, Zetherin. But I never actually said I wanted to be a moderator at all. That was Intrepid. I really hope this clears things up.

Apologies for the digression from the thread topic.

@Butrflynet,
Those were my words plucked from philforum posts. Don't make me define them, she says, twistedly.

I'm fine with the philforum having its own discourse, and figure they will work out their terms of service.

(I'm sorry I spoke)

Ah, I see. I'm not exactly sure what ossobuco was referring to, but he was probably just referring to a more structured forum where the posts will be more academic (in this case, philosophically academic) in nature.

But you'll have to get word from him to be sure.

Oh, I thought you did.

You said: "I'm interested, jgweed.", on the last page. Oh, you just meant you were interested in the answer to that question?! Doh, stupid me!

Now, I am confused. What did you mean by?

I'm interested, jgweed. How many moderator contenders have offered their services at this stage? This is not meant as a provocative or trick question. I'm genuinely interested. But don't respond if you'd prefer not to, OK? I've noticed quite a few here who could do the job very nicely!

Was the "I'm interested" misinterpreted?

@Zetherin,
Okay, let's use the words you've just written.

Quote:
will be more academic

What does that mean in relation to an internet forum topic discussion?

What makes a post "more academic?"

@Intrepid,
<sigh>
Ah. I thought I said I was interested to know how many had applied for the moderators positions, Intrepid. That was what I was genuinely interested in knowing more about.
I would definitely not be of any use at all as a moderator, because I'm not a philosopher, nor moderator material.
Sorry about the confusion. I hope everything is clear now. Smile

What does that mean in relation to an internet forum topic discussion?

Essentially, it just means that this particular community will foster serious philosophical discussion, ie. there will be rules and standards that people must abide by. And in relation to this particular forum group, it could mean that the participants are formally trained in philosophy (and so instead of just laxly discussing something, you may see formal arguments and debate). But, of course, as was noted earlier, not everyone that participates is expected to have formal training. And jgweed and I encourage anyone with an interest to participate.
Butrflynet wrote:

The word is to be used a bit loosely here. Again, a post that is academic in the new group will be one that is philosophical and abides by the rules and standards of the group.

I don't even think jgweed used that word in his opening post, though, so you needn't worry about it.

@Zetherin,
Can you post a link to an existing formal philosophical discussion or debate from the old forum topics that complied with the set of rules and standards you seem to have trouble describing so I can take a look at what it is these terms actually will mean in reality?

What did I have trouble describing?

I fear you came in with a misconception because of a term you read on ossobuco's post, that the original poster, jgweed, did not even note in his opening post. Again, you will have to ask ossobuco what he meant by that term. But I am not sure why you think that term has any relevance to this discussion group.

The rules and standards will be posted when the new forum group is open. Are you not familiar with rules that are posted for particular forums on the internet? I suppose I can sort though the dozens of forums I've come across during the years and show you some forums that have their rules posted. The theory is the same.

And as noted, not all discussion will be formal. In fact, 99% of it probably won't be. Again, the community doesn't require formal training of any sort.

@Butrflynet,
How would my showing you a discussion from the old forum, allow you to decipher all of the rules that the posts in that discussion abided by? It would be difficult to give you an example discussion from any structured forum and expect you to do that, really. I'm not sure what you're asking for. A rule may be, for example, no spamming. Or no irrelevant chatter. Or no graphics. Or are you asking for special, philosophical rules? There aren't any that I know of, besides, well, that the post must be philosophically relevant.
