Considering that the Soviets were lured into Afghanistan in 1981 to be drained, and the eventual break up of the USSR was credited to this drainage, it's a surprise that the US would allow itself to fall into the same hole, which has undoubtedly initiated it's decline. Iraq war is so dangerous that it threatens the very concept of modern nation-states. It was a war to start all wars.

Russia had been in and out of Afghanistan since the 1800's, even backing them against the British long ago. Some people say that the war help lead to their collapse, but they were hardly "lured" there.

America is not as smart as some believe it to be...
We learned nothing from the French occupation and attempted imperialistic designs on Indochine, which led to our involvement in the disastrous Vietnam War.
We learned nothing from the fiasco of Russia's attempt to subjugate Afghanistan, and are now "bogged down" there...and why?
The answer comes from watching the History Channel's special on "300", the story of the 300 Spartans and their defeat at the hands of the Persian Army, at Thermopylae. The reason the Spartans were able to hold off the Persian army is the war was fought at a pass, which proved sufficient enough to allow a tactical withdrawal of the Greek forces, which later regrouped for a victorious engagement at Salamis.
It's the reason Switzerland has never been invaded....passes.
It's the reason that tactical warfare cannot be won in Afghanistan...terrain and "passes".
American military prowess is not what it's cracked up to be...we need to get rid of the old, stale guard , and infuse the leadership with new, intelligent blood.....obviously. Generals "on the ground", who can't think outside of their own private Idahos.

We are obligated to fight radical Islam to the bitter end. It doesn't matter where we fight it, as long as we protect the homeland. Iraq is just one of many possible battlefields. Why not? Keep fighting.

Funny enough, if we had done the right thing, and sided with Iran in 1953 instead of the British, who knows where we would be nowadays.

But it's that "cowboy mentality", of bravado and swagger, and packing big guns, and lunging "head first" into a region, conflict, or endeavor, without any research, practical knowledge or expertise (of the region or the peoples), and certainly the lack of diplomatic overtures, and thinking the mere "carrying a big stick" and touting catchphrases such as, "looking out for our interests", and "the war on terrorism", and "we have to deal with the terrorists "there" or they'll be here" (which is ludicrous....they're already here, and have been, prior to 9/11...so that argument falls flat...or I guess folks forgot about the flight lessons the 9/11 terrorists were able to secure, in Florida, no less...when there had been evidence of embassy bombings and terrorist displays, "prior"...so the argument is "we need to deal with them over there, as opposed to over here, "NOW"...which is just plain "moronic")...when the truth of the matter is that we have "ulterior motives", and are not being truthful about it. We don't really care about spreading democracy throughout the Middle East...we don't care about the ideologies of "potential business partners"...because we have dealings , daily, with nations that have differing and conflicting ideologies from us....all we give a good rat's booty about is the oil and the unimpeded flow of that oil...everything else is negotiable.
Heck, if it came down to choosing between the oil and support for Israel...don't you know, Israel would be left to fend for itself, in a heartbeat (see ya, wouldn't want to be ya)...because Americans care about their SUV's and the comfort of a warm or cool living room...so let's just f... the dumb s..., tell the truth, and shame the devil.

Georgie Porgie and Dickey Wickey are the biggest lying vaginas, ever...and most of the stupid American populace fell for their dog and pony act...
Yeah, they'll kick some Iraqi or Afghan butt...or maybe some Somalian booty...but you don't see them messing with North Korea, do you? or Russia's Putin, do ya? Or Hugo Chavez? Uh-Uh...nope..they tiptoe quite nicely around the likes of them. What? You think they might be scared of them? You damn straight. America doesn't dare f... with them...Know why? Because they wouldn't play the game....it would be high stakes. Nuclear. And Bushie and Dickey know better, than to mess around. So, they pick on the weak ones, Iraq, Afghanistan, waving "big sticks", and acting like they're really doing something. Chickenshits. Cowards. and Charletans. Lives lost, needlessly.
Prestige gone, indefinitely. A more dangerous world, where we are hated...hated for what we stand for now, not what we believed in then. All for show. Biblical proportions tragic.

Since Pinchot is so adamantly opposed to the radical Islam (or Islam period), which was deliberately fanned to fight the USSR during the 1980's, he should perhaps start addressing the next wave of radicals being created by the US.

"American scientists have declared that in ten years they will succeed in creating a radically new type of biological weapon. This weapon would be capable of infecting people according to a genetically predetermined marker such as skin color or eye shape. Infection could have a delayed effect or only begin once a certain type of medicine was taken. A recent closed seminar held by the CIA was devoted to the topic. The event took place as part of the Project for the New American Century (PNAC)."

Mark my words - like the radical Islamists created, these germs will mutate and come back to haunt you - "What goes around, comes around."

RedOct,
Thank you, for telling the truth. It just killed me when the substitute spokesperson for Press Secretary, Tony Snow, got up there and talked about "when you stir the hornet's nest"...as if she was "baking a cake"....
Imbecile. The ramifications are that you have made matters worse, not better, not acceptable collateral damage.
There was no frigging Al-Qaeda, in frigging Iraq, prior to our toppling Saddam...get that straight....the factions frigging feared Saddam, and they didn't dare "clown", lest their families be chopped up into little bits, slowly.
Saddam, whether you choose to admit it, kept everybody in line...and as soon as he was gone...there was nothing in place to maintain order. And we frigging made matters worst by dismantling the army, already in place, and replacing it with nothing. Blunder after blunder after frigging blunder.
The "ill-conceived" war in Iraq, made matters worse...and now it has become the breeding ground and training camp for terrorists, who will be marketed around the globe. Thank you George Bush and Dick Cheney. Thank you, (edited by admin)Thank you.

This is not entirely true, we did replace their army with a local national gaurd, which suffered from lack of training, weapons and funding, as well as people joining then after being trained dissappearing with their weapons, only to be found later fighting against us. Iraq is also not a breeding ground for terrorism, it is more a recruiting ground, and not so much today, as it was a couple years ago. The big problem and mistake right now is our lack of continued action against other nations that harbor and finance terrorist, and fighters going to Iraq to fight us. BushCo is so inbed with the royal house of Saud that he will never act on the fact that they are supplying over 40% of the foreign fighters in Iraq, other than Cheney going and sweet talking the prince with a little limpwristed lipservice.
