@mysteryman,
I agree, except they are not using that car that way. And, I never said destroy the Confederate flags, but to put them where they are not racially provocative. Such as in a museum.

Incidentally, there are no former slave owners living, for sure. But people who wrap themselves in that flag and burn churches and preach hate abound all over the south.

No one is talking about banning anything. If you want to fly it, please do so. You have that right.

@engineer,
For sure. I only meant in an official capacity, when I urged they be moved.

Quote:
According to the bill’s backers, the Confederate flag is “a symbol of racism, exclusion, oppression and violence towards many Americans. Its symbolism and history is directly linked to the enslavement, torture and murder of millions of Americans through the mid-19th Century. Even today, its public display is designed to instill fear, intimidation and a direct threat of violence towards others.”

Hall’s AB 2444, sponsored by the California/Hawaii NAACP does not restrict a private resident from selling a Confederate flag on private property nor does it prohibit a private resident from displaying a Confederate flag. Rather, AB 2444 places a reasonable restriction on the State of California from selling or displaying the flag or its image and is consistent with similar restrictions in other state and local jurisdictions.

“No Californian should be exposed to the type of hate or threat of violence caused by the image of the Confederate flag,” said Assemblymember Hall. “AB 2444 respects Constitutional protections by restricting government speech, not individual speech and will send a strong message that California and its taxpayers will not be in the business of promoting racism, exclusion, oppression or violence towards others.

In other words the state will allow individuals to have a flag, and fly it in some places, but only because they have to because of the constitution.....they dont want to.

Flying the flag IS intended to be a direct call for violence??!!. It is possible in some cases I suppose, but this is some pretty gigantic rhetorical overreach.....AKA lie.

Nobody is going to ban any flag, it won't pass constitutional muster. If any state were foolish enough to try it, the Federal courts would strike it down in a heartbeat.

Yep, that is how protected speech works. Regardless of how hateful it is and how much others would prefer not to hear it, you can say it because of the Constitution. The only recourse is to speak back.

If you want to ban the confederate flag even though there is not one person alive today that was a slave or owned slaves, at least here in the U.S., then it makes sense, using that same logic, to bN something that represents a regime that caused and is still causing hatred, fear, and suffering to people still alive today.

Next week, when they try to make VW the official car of Texas, I'll remember these words of prophesy.

@DrewDad,
All you need is the hysterical screaming rat bag crowd supporting VW and ordinary people will debate banning it . Isn't that what is happening here with the Rebel Flag ?

@mysteryman,
Mysteryman, there are two problems with this logic.

1) Do you really think the swastika will cease to be deeply offensive once the last survivor of the concentration camp dies? I don't.

2) The Confederate flag is the symbol of Jim Crow and of lynching. People who have suffered under the hatred symbolized by the Confederate flag are still alive today.

@Ionus,
1. The Swastika is a racist symbol. Volkswagen is not a racist symbol.

2. The Confederate flag is a racist system. Jim Beam Bourbon is not a racist symbol.

This is an awfully silly tangent.

So is the USA flag from the Revolutionary War . There was a Judge Charles Lynch (1736-96) who presided over a court in Pittsylvania, Virginia, that held trials of Tory sympathizers during the American Revolution . Guess what he did to those he thought were traitors to the USA traitors ? You do realise the USA flag stands for mutiny and traitors against the King ?

And the USA approved of slavery . Why dont you get a new flag ?

@maxdancona,
So if the world wants an opinion on racist symbolism all they have to do is ask you . What about the Black Power flag, or the aboriginee flag in Oz, or the Indian Nations flags...dont these exclude white men ?

The American flag still waves because we won the war against England. It still waves in the South because we won the war against the Confederates. I think this is a good thing.

The American flag is a symbol of Freedom and Unity. The flag belongs to every region of the US, to every race and to every religion. All of us claim the flag and what it symbolizes.

There is no other flag flown in the US that can claim that.

It's illegal to display the swastika in Germany today to the Nazis fly the Confederate flag instead, because they both mean the same thing.

The Confederate flag flying in or near to public buildings in southern states here in the US...

...is what we Americans call "being in your face."

I am sure some people consider it to be an acknowledgement of heritage...but for the most part, people seem to support it from the position of "in your face."

Opposing it is "in your face" also.

Right now, the opposing "in your face" is looking bomb.

For many of us, it is a welcome change from how things have been for many, many years in southern states.

The Confederates still wave their flag because the attempt to separate failed . If the 13 colonies hadn't of been successful, we could be having this conversation about their flag .

Aparently not the black movement, or the Indians . The unions have their own too .

Had the 13 colonies not been successful, what flag do you think pathetic racist terrorists would be waving to justify murdering black people in a church?

@maxdancona,
The flag of rebellion, the 13 colonies flag just like the rebel flag is now a symbol of rebellion . Do you really think they wave the rebel flag to justify murder ? Even the one at the state capitol ?
