@realjohnboy,
I got one of those cheap complete game 8 inning losses today, rjb.

kinda made my day to pick him up for a one game swing...

my guy gave up 4 runs.

(and for best results, shake that pbr vigorously just prior to serving...)

How cool is this. I lead Gargamel 10-8 in our matchup this week. My team leads in batting average by .001 and there is only one player still in contention:
Gargamel's player with the awesome name of Prince Fielder.
He will be coming up to bat 2nd in the next inning. If he fails to get a hit, I win.
If he gets a hit, we tie.
I should be in bed, but I have to see how this plays out.

Moving right along to my next great disappointment. I have Wakefield on my pitching staff. Tim and I are having to get used to the fact that he is not a SP.
Okay. I figure I will see how he does as a RP. Maybe as a long RP rather than a closer.
Sure enough he comes in tonight against the Yankees and has 2.1 solid innings. 29 pitches; 19 strikes. And the Sox take the lead. Tim could get the win. But they pull him in favor of some clown who gives up 2 HR's in the bottom of the 9th.
Why would they pull an ex-SP who is used to going much longer after a mere 29 pitches?

@Rockhead,
Wake doesn't have a fastball. He has knucklers, Ephus pitches and weird stuff that goes in the dirt and scares the people in the front row.

@realjohnboy,
Could be worse, John-Boy.
I had the starter, Dice-K, and the closer, Papelbon.
Brutal.

I Have Been Invited ... and you haven't. Ha, ha.
My name has found its way onto a list being sold to telemarketers. I evidently am being described as rich by the seller of the list.
About every 2 months, the poor suckers who bought the list call. I get 6 or so calls in a week's time trying to get me to invest in an oil drilling project.
On Monday, I got an invitation with the embossed logo of the Washington Redskins inviting ME to an exclusive event an FedExField - Redskin Park. Cocktails, a gourmet meal and (I couldn't quite figure this out) more cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvers.
Redskins memorabilia will be mine and, judging from the brochure, the opportunity to meet many of the Washington Redskin's cheerleaders!
That is the bait. The hook is "Discover The Many Ways Redskins Suite Ownership Enhances Business Relationships."
I can:
>Thank clients
> Entertain prospective customers
> Reward employees
> Network with peers
> Create priceless memories

Hot damn! I just found a dollar in the pocket of the shirt I wore yesterday. If I can find a quarter in my truck tomorrow, I can get a sausage biscuit at Burger King.

so.

what do you do if your starting pitcher vomits seven runs in the second inning?

why, leave him in so's he can give up some more, of course.

ain't like he's ain't tired or anything...

@Rockhead,
And then the bullpen gets to hang around longer and play Canasta (or whatever it is they do; here, they play the spoons) and bask in the glories of their better than infinite ERAs.

@Rockhead,
well... if we have a 6+ ERA through Thursday we might as well go for a record and get it out of our system. 8.05 through Friday... anyone know what the record is?

@JPB,
the REALLY scary thing is that we have an 8+ ERA after almost 40 innings of work.

that is wholesale crappy.

and the relievers have been outstanding or we'd be about in the 10's.

it can only get better.

wish seed was here to watch and win...

Good grief. I had 3 pitchers going yesterday, and they each lasted only 3 innings each. One of them (Penny) hit a grand slam home run off another (Pineiro), really helping my teams ERA, then then finding his way to the DL because he hurt his back swinging the bat.

we are getting our ass handed to us by a mysteriously absent seed this week.

our strangely ill starting pitching may have assisted him.

to focus on the positives this week, here is what Yahoo says about my catcher...

"C Russell Martin was finally given the day off after catching the last 21 consecutive games. Martin's rest came despite the fact that he was riding a career-best 15-game win streak. Martin entered play Friday with the second most innings caught in the NL this season at 323 2/3. The Cardinals' Yadier Molina had the most at 329."

that Yadier guy looks familiar as well...

(i think they would hit better if they weren't so damn tired, but nobody listens to me.)

Tim Wakefield (Boston) gets his 1st SP job today after some time as a RP.
Boston leads @ Philly 7-0 after 8 innings. Wakefield has given up no runs and 5 hits. He has just 1 K, however. His pitch total is such that he could get the CG and the Shutout.
That would drive the final nail into my whupping of the Desert Dogs.

@realjohnboy,
we adopted a new strategy midweek, and it has started to pay off.

we went out and got guys that were going to hit against our pitchers.

(cuz those are the guys who have really been knocking the crap out of the ball)
