@JPB,
I think the worst is over here, Jaye. Still snowing hard, but hopefully not turning to sleet like it did for a couple of hours yesterday. DC/Balt/Philly could continue to get slammed today.
Farmerman is in, as I recall, Harrisburg which is an hour west of Philly.

@realjohnboy,
Actually Im in Lancaster which is about an hour and a half west of Philly Harrisburg is a bit further still.
QWe are in the "eye" and its just a mess. Ive never seen drifts so high. Our fields look like big dunes of snow.

Im gonna get my snowshoes on and take a walk later as it slows. Now its hard to see very far.

@realjohnboy,
It finally is stopping. The radar map shows the storm quitting from the west.

I lost but then found power this afternoon after an hour or so.
It is still snowing hard but to the south there is a hint of the sun. It is about the size of a dime from my vantage point and about as dim as Rockhead.

@realjohnboy,
Here in Springfield VA, we got 20-24 inches of snow but not too much else in the way of loss of power -- no blowing winds. I feel fortunate that is all we had for trouble.

However, we had lost our furnace heat for about 24 hours, but not from loss of AC power. Our inside temps dropped to 59 degress and held there. We had replaced our thermostat about 5 weeks ago around when the frigid weather happened in mid-Dec. This time the problem was the ignitor AND a gas valve-switch (solenoid). Perhaps this 14-yr-old heating system was too over-worked with all the demands of this crazy winter.

The trick was finding a willing and able contractor to get out here. It took 6 different calls to find one company who would even return our call. Our previous contractor, who had installed the new thermostat and had been doing the normal twice-per-yr maintenance, left us high and dry w/o even a call.

So, we now we are warm and cozy. During this heating emergency we didn't suffer too badly as we had quartz heaters plugged in whever we sat.

Bring on the Super Bowl.

@Ragman,
Bring on the guys restoring power and food distribution and never mind the fat cats playing in the Superbowl. The latter are a mere indulgence. Good fun but not that important.

The snow stopped here in Cville around 3 pm. And then the power went out until a few minutes ago. 6+ hours. Inside temp got down to 69.
I went to bed under a bunch of blankets. I am now slept out.
I admire the utility crews who have to work under difficult, even dangerous, conditions to re-string downed wires for a generally unappreciative public, angry about the inconvenience they are having to endure.
I am, I guess, luckier than many folks. The power company focuses on outages that affect the most people or are in areas deemed critical. The line that serves me comes from the west and provides power to, for example, a nursing home and numerous traffic lights at busy intersections.
I am sure that there are folks who have been and will be powerless for many, many hours.
I measure 18 inches of snow. That is lower than predicted. But the sleet late yesterday really compacted it.
Percy, the snow plowing dude, came through while I was asleep. He put in a session on the townhouse project I own. He also totally cleared, again, the 30 yard long sidewalk to my house.
All is well.
At least for me. Yall take care.

Didja know:
There is a coin toss at the beginning of the Super Bowl game with the winner getting to decide whether to kick or receive or let the other team choose.
In the 43 years, the coin has landed "heads" 22 times and "tails" 21.
The winner of the coin toss has gone on to Super Bowl glory 20 of the 43 times but is 3-10 in the last decade or so.

@Rockhead,
Thanks a lot, Rockhead.
J.D. Salinger died in the last week or so. For many of us of a certain age, Catcher In The Rye was a rite of passage from juvenile to adult literature.
The incident in the story that has always stuck in my head is where Holden is asked by some buffoon to write a story he needs to turn in tomorrow. He can't write it himself because he needs to party tonight.
What should he write about, Holden asks, and is told that it doesn't matter as long as it is "descriptive as hell."
Holden writes about his dead little brother's baseball mitt.

I went to my virtual closet and found my mitt from 50 years ago. The smell, mostly leather but with a hint of sweat.

The baseball season is coming up. There may be snow and ice right now for many of us, but in just a few weeks players will report to parks in Florida and Arizona for training.

Once again, we will have an A2K Fantasy Baseball League. Details later but let me know if you are interested.
