@George,
I have the bike and should get back to it. Thing is, I like getting outside. SAD is semi held at bay when I do.
PS Dunham's Waffle Stompers. Good for walking but not for 5K.
The comeback progresses. Now I'm walking longer distances at a somewhat
quick pace. I'll be increasing the distance throughout the week. Next
week I'll mix in some short intervals of jogging.
I was starting to get the weight gain under control. Then came Hallowe'en.
@George,
in order to get some after-work jogging in,
i was thinking of getting one of those reflective vests.
it won't help with the phone zombies who don't watch where they're walking whether it's light or dark out,
but at least i'll have a fighting chance of not getting hit by a car...

. . . by accident.
On the other hand, you'll be an easy target.
We have a corporate "wellness" program here at the Widget Factory. The
current event is "European Expedition". You can join a team and record
your steps with a (company-provided) pedometer. Your team is tracked on
a virtual trip through Europe starting at Amsterdam. Yeah, it's hokey, but
I give them credit for trying. And I got a free pedometer.
This comes at a good time for me. I have laid off running due to an injury
and am now using walking to rehab. There are two buildings here and
I have my cube at the westernmost part of one and do a lot of work in the
lab in the easternmost part of the other. Add to this that I go out for a
long walk at lunch and that's a lot of steps.
Here are my daily totals so far:
10/30 -- 10,024
10/31 -- 17,472
11/01 -- 7,242
11/02 -- 5,030
11/03 -- 13,432
11/04 -- 14,244
11/05 -- 15,124
The contrast between how much I walk at work and at home on the
weekend is startling.
Jingle Bell Run
Dec. 14, 2014, 11:00
Davis Sq, Somerville
I have rounded up the usual suspects:
Rhys, Nigel & George
(The Great Blue Herons)
Rhys and I did our Saturday morning workout at the gym and finished off
with a jog/walk outside. We did intervals of a minute jogging and two
minutes running. The hammies did OK.
It was 60 degrees and sunny at noon, a perfect day for a run. I wasn't
running. I'm still rehabbing some hamstring tendonitis. Instead, I walked
and jogged, alternating at two-minute intervals. I went for thirty minutes
and covered 2.3 miles. Too early to say for sure, but I think I'm on pace to be
ready for the Jingle Bell Run.
A grey November day, cold and rainy. It was seriously thinking about
jogging outside today. For about 30 seconds. Instead, I rode the
stationary bike in the fitness room for half an hour.
I've become a weenie.
@George,
nothin' weenish about staying in on a day like today.
skidding on slippery leaves can be detrimental n' stuff...
i've been doing 4-milers.
curious to see if it helps improve my 5k time...
@Region Philbis,
I'll bet those 4-milers do help.
Doing any interval training?
@George,
nope.
R(unless sprinting across Atlantic Avenue before the light changes counts)P
Yesterday and today I went for a 3.8-mile jog/walk, doing intervals of 3
minutes jogging and 2 minutes walking. My legs have felt good during the
jogging and I haven't had any hamstring sorenss to speak of. Very
encouaging. I'll move the intervals up ti 4 minutes jogging and two
minutes walking tomorrow.
Got my intervals to 4/2 jog/walk. My times are getting better too.
Today I did my 3.8 route with intervals of 4 and 1. My average pace
was 10:43. Not exactly burning up the roads, but definitely progress.
It was in the low 60s today with a spinkle of rain at the start of my jog.
Warm enough for shorts!
@George,
did a 4.5 miler last night after the Pates game.
hadda loosen up those sore leg muscles after rakin' leaves all weekend...
@Region Philbis,
. . . and now it's time to get the snow-blower prepped.
There's bike trail along Lake Champlain in Burlington Vermont. I drove
down from our hotel in Colchester early Monday morning for a jog. After a
weekend of eating too much good food in Montreal, I needed it. About six
minutes into the jog, it was clear that some of that food was about to end
its tour through my innards. No worries. There's a little building at the
Burlington waterfront with bathrooms. So I headed back. On the door
was a sign reading "Facilities Closed for the Season". OK, now worries.
I started to jog up Main St. to find open facilities. Jogging was quickly not
an option. And so I walked. Uncomfortably. I found the the world's most
welcome Starbucks on Church St. After restoring my equilibrium, I walked
around the Church St. area for a while. It's a closed pedestrian mall full of
stores selling clothes I'd look silly in and back-woodsy gear for places I
never go. But it's pretty.
Eventually I made my way back to the waterfront and did a couple of token miles.
Comfortably.
@George,

hate when that happens...
