@ossobuco,
I was guessing you were close to the finish line, went to the kitchen to make tea, came back and there you are - 2:50:59. Yaaaaay.

Ran the Bread of Life 5K.

Nigel ran as did his GF. Nigel came in first. Rhys ran a personal best at
36:25. I was a step or two behind him.

@ossobuco,
It was a fun time. It's not so much a race as a fun run and walk to benefit
the food pantry that my wife and Rhys volunteer at. The weather was just
what an early October day in New England should be (and usually isn't).

@ossobuco,
What I Learned About Running a Completely Unprepared For Half Marathon.

1) Clip my toenails. (I knew this before, I forgot about it.) Ahem. Pictures of bloody toes available on PM if requested. (Don't)
2) Don't just grab any pair of socks out of the drawer. (I knew this before too. Mine bunched up at six miles and ten miles. When trying to decide whether to stop and change socks, I described the discomfort to myself as
A) burning coals,
B) broken glass
or C) Broken Glass resting on burning COALS>!
~~~making it necessary to STOP [something I never do] to switch left sock to right foot and vice versa, this actually works.
For at least four miles....
3) On the good side, both times I stopped, I got to pass people who had passed me. That's good for motivation.
It was my slowest half marathon of all time.
I don't care.
I continue to have problems with my left leg. After eight to ten minutes
of jogging, the hammies get very sore and I start geting twinges of pain in
the knee. I've tried alternating walking and jogging, but I'm not getting
any better.
So the plan now is to lay off the jogging for two weeks. I'll walk or use the
stationary bike or rower instead.
Bummer.
@Region Philbis,
hope the cooler weather didn't mean too many layers of wardrobe
@ehBeth,
i wore sweats, a tank top, and two long-sleeve shirts.
it was chilly and windy, but about half way through, the sun made an appearance.
this is the local race that takes place right down the block from us,
so i could get away with wearing less than i normally would.
good food after -- muffins, little sammitches (including grilled cheese), chicken curry, chowdah...
I'd been steadily gaining weight since I stopped jogging. Ugh.
I mixed some light work on the stationary bike in with some weights and
resistance yesterday (plus more diet discipline). This morning the scale
was a bit kinder, but I'm still too heavy.
Tonight is gym night with my man Rhys. We usually end up with ten
minutes of jogging on the treadmill. Tonight he'll jog and I'll walk.
@George,
Weight has gone up as my right knee has decided to scream at me every time I walk down (not up, oddly enough) a flight of stairs.
Physician's assistant says my weight is making my knee go bad.
No, the knee was going bad before. I'm gaining weight because I can't walk as far as I used to, not on a regular basis.
X-rays revealed degenerative changes associated with aging. In the meantime, I take Advil and try not to make that a daily habit. Gaaahhh.
@jespah,
Last time I ran was across Coors Boulevard, which at that intersection had the pedestrian walk light set for amazingly few seconds. Scary, since cars can be fierce along there. I miss running/jogging, which I gradually stopped when I had all the eye kaboom starting around 2004. Need to walk more. Baaad girl. It's a good time of year here for walking, so I've got to shape up. Knees have held up fine, knock wood, and weight ok, but my balance is weirder now so I walk slower. Now that I've gotten new Danskos, which some how magically ground my feet well, the balance has improved some and I can zig along faster. The danskos are even better for that 'grounding' than my still favorite running shoes.
Gaaahhh, indeed!
Is there anything more fickle than a knee?
Have you tried a stationary bike or a rower?
@George,
They just happen to fit my feet extra well re high arch, mix of support and flex.
These are the ones - (most other styles have full ankle fit, but these were on sale)
http://www.rei.com/etc/static/rei-wcm/pix/common/pixel.gif
They make men's too, but I'd try them in a shop as they're likely not right for everyone.
(had to edit because the pic didn't show up)
@ossobuco,
Oh, well, that didn't either.
Try this, second row down, the one to the far right.
A lot of nurses and others on their feet a lot like danskos.
