Two-Mile Mike was swamped yesterday, so I did my 3.8 mile route. The
weather was more typically summer than it has been and I didn't push it.
It was a day to do the distance.

@Region Philbis,
At my fastest I only did approaching but not quite 4 miles in an hour, slightly up hill and then slightly down.

I think of you as fast sprite, Reege.

Get yourself an East Boston HS jacket and yell "Micks Suck!" as you run.

I got a 10K run in. My goal was to complete it in less minutes than I am
years old. I did it! Given that I am an old fart, the time is not impressive,
but I am happy with it.

Rhys, Nigel and I went for a paddle on the Concord. Rhys's technique and
power showed great improvement. We all put out a good effort and were
totally gassed at the end.

Great Moments in Navigation: I was stern man (thus responsible for
steering) on the last leg. I decided to cut a really sharp angle going in to
the put-in point. But in doing so I came very close to an overhanging
bush and was heading toward a submerged rock. Nigel, in the bow,
quickly responded to pull us away from the rock as Rhys ducked to avoid
the bush. That was enough to throw us off balance and over we went!

It's that time of year in New England when you start to think that this
might not be such a bad place to live. The memory of summer's heat and
humidity are fading and winter is just a grim foreboding.

Some of the trees along South Chelmsford Road were showing a hint of
color and there was a cool breeze. There were plenty of cyclists and other
runners out and everybody seemed to be enjoying the weather. I tried to
ignore the weariness in my legs and look upbeat. Maybe someone would
think I was a marathoner on his low-intensity run.

I finished ten kilometers and took a long shower. I glanced at myself in the
mirror and saw someone who looked like he should run more often. I didn't
look in the mirror again.

Two-Mile Mike and I were only a few minutes into our jog when the
cramping set in. It wasn't the spmasmodic kind of cramp, it was mostly
soreness in the hamstrings and down the outside of the calf on my right
leg.

We slowed down to a walk then after a short while started jogging again.
Not much later we were walking again. Then jogging. Then walking. And
finally jogging to the end. The cramping went away fast as soon as I
stopped jogging. I was annoyed.

Yesterday was cold and rainy anyway so I sayed inside and used the
stationary bike. Today I plan to jog again. I hope the cramp does not
return.

@George,

hate when that happens.

what kind of stretching do you do beforehand?

i used to stretch the calves & hammies beforehand, and eventually realized that it was making me cramp up sometimes.

so now i just do a few squats to loosen up the knees...

@Region Philbis,
Yeah, I think they're right when they say don't stretch cold muscles. A
few light squats, bends and twists is what I usually do. Usually.

I did that today and went for a jog. Pulled up again. I think I'll rest the
legs for a bit and then go back to square one: walk with short intervals of
jogging. Then increase the length and frequency of the jogging intervals
until it's all jogging.

I actually think I may have hurt my leg canoeing. We were out on a pond
on a windy day. You've got to work hard to keep the wind from pushing
the bow wherever it wants. That's mostly the job of the stern man.
In order to get leverage, I brace my knees out against the gunwales.
That can take its tool.

I'm back.

~I don't stretch at all until after I've covered a couple of miles, and then only if something's complaining (usually my most ungrateful right knee.)

~I'm officially so far back in my training for this year's marathon (Nov 2) that I doubt I will ready for next year's.

~Worked up and down the hills of the Heights today for about an hour.....hnmmm , I only have to do that sort of thing for five hours or so in November, so what the problem?

One thing I won't do is run wearing headphones.
I want to hear what's going on around me.

I do log my runs online, though.

This morning is the Greta Half Marathon.

I am unprepared. So, the plan is to trot the whole thing without actually thinking...... seeing as how I haven't done any thinking about it prior to the event.

Up early now in an attempt to clear things out of the system, if you get my drift.

Text 5244 to 37619 to get texts of my progress or lack thereof.
