zero dawdlidge!

a tough hill from brighton center to comm ave, coupled with a stiff wind from the west made the going more difficulter.
glad my grouchy right calf was able2 hold it's own...

@jespah,

Thanks for making it so easy to register for the Jingle Bell Run in the correct Somerville. I shouldn't have to drive to Somerville, Indiana this time! (Or was it Somerville, Michigan?)

Good. We'll be running in the same state, then.

Ran the NYRR Marathon Tune-Up today, which is a 5M race. I ran it in 49:54—first five-miler under 50 minutes, first race ran at a faster pace than 10- minute miles. Best run since arriving in America, period. I feel very comfortable about the Marathon now.

Kickoff, not Tune-up. Not that it matters much. A run by any other name....

My husband has recently gotten into running and just did his first 5K. He finished under 22 minutes, I was proud of him. Now sozlet wants to do one, and I'm definitely tempted in a way I haven't been before. Maybe.

Meanwhile, go runners go!

would settle for 8:30's, but that'd be pushing it...
(will you be joining us?)

@ossobuco,
Cool!

Runners, I have a question. As I mentioned above, my husband is now very into running. He's very hard to get presents for and both a birthday and Christmas are coming up. This new interest in running presents an opportunity, gift-wise.

I already plan to get him a Road ID, an engraved thingie that goes on your shoe, with ID and important info. (He'd been stuffing a business card in his sock.)

He has good shoes and running shorts and t-shirts + jackets and stuff.

So far he's not a major distance runner, not more than ~4 miles. That might increase, I don't know, but that's not his main thing right now.

Any suggestions for cool gear? Utility is paramount. (I.e. I wouldn't have gotten him the ID thingie if he wasn't already doing the business card trick -- the engraved ID is much more practical.) If it's something you find extremely useful and you're so glad you have it, perfect. If it's merely shiny and cool, maybe but probably not.

Thanks!

@sozobe,
A Polar HRM, which is actually what I'm considering for myself for Chanukah. My Sparkie buddies swear by theirs.

@jespah,
That does look cool!

He's pretty much past the fitness stage of this (he's quite fit) (way fitter than me, which is annoying since I've been working out seriously for a couple of years longer than he has) and is more interested in time etc. Plus it looks a bit pricey!

So let me amend that under $50 is the preferred price range, with only super-cool things getting that high. $10-$25 is the sweet spot.

@sozobe,
The nice thing about running is that you don't need a lot of gear. But . . .

About the t-shirts, it's a good idea to have the layer next to your chest
made out of one of those miracle fabrics, not cotton. I once did a long
race wearing a cotton tee. At the end of the race I discovered two pinkish
streaks down the front of my shirt. My nipples had been rubbed raw and
were bleeding.

About "gear", I'm saving my pennies for a new Garmin Forerunner.
I haven't decided on the model yet. These are wrist-mounted GPSes that
can track your mileage and your pace and a host of other stuff.

Ping Joe Nation. He is robo-runner.
