@Diest TKO,
Yeah, I read about that. That's a bummer, but I dare say a broken bone is possible to recover from.

@FreeDuck,
We can hope as much. Two broken bones. He's going to be off of his feet for a pretty long time. Therapy after that. Both injuries were on his striking leg.

How did it take me so long to find this thread?

Most of Mexico was rooting for Uruguay yesterday... just to laugh at all the Argentinian waiters in Mexico. We lost.
We were also rooting for civilized Costa Rica to qualify, and not savage Honduras. But El Salvador failed us.

IMO, the European repechage draw will be monitored; they'll seed the teams to favor the supposed powerhouses. It will probably look something like this:
Russia-Slovenia
France-Bosnia Herzegovina
Portugal-Ireland
Greece-Ukraine

With Argentina qualifying directly, my guess is that the World Cup draw will be as follows:
-Heads of group: RSA, BRA, ITA, ENG, GER, SPA, ARG and FRA (or HOL, if France doesn't qualify).
-All other UEFA (European) teams.
-All other American teams (Concacaf & Conmebol) and Australia or New Zealand (if NZL qualifies)
-African and Asian teams (minus Australia, if Bahrein qualifies).

If France qualifies, automatically the group with the Netherlands will be "the group of death".

@fbaezer,
Russia-Ukraine would be an interesting match-up.

Parochialism personified:

Forced to attend a party!

@lmur,
Who do you Irish prefer to face, Imur?

@fbaezer,
In ascending order of "preferability": Greece, Russia, Portugal, France. Assistant coach, Tardelli wants Greece. Confidence is pretty low (despite two draws against the World Champions').

@Walter Hinteler,
No indeed. Once more we'll probably end up supporting whoever England are playing (even Honduras)!

The draw for the European Zone 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa ...

Republic of Ireland-France
Portugal-Bosnia-Herzegovina
Greece-Ukraine
Russia-Slovenia

The play-offs will be contested on a two-legged, home-and-away basis on 14 and 18 November.

@Francis,
My favoring Ireland has a deep reasoning:
If France qualifies, it'll be head of a group, and that enhances the probability of falling in a group with 2 football powerhouses (say Brazil and Holland). If Ireland qualifies, the probability of falling in a group with 2 football powerhouses is reduced to zero: it enchances the probability of falling in a group with South Africa... and Ireland.
Go Bonnie Ireland, beat those smelly cheese-eaters!

What method are you using for that prediction?

Haruspicy?

Haruspicy schmaruspicy! In the interests of sportsmanship, may the best team win. I would like to remind our fellow-Europeans of the recent Lisbon Treaty result and trust that some form of agreeable reciprocation might be appropriate here?!

@Walter Hinteler,
I'm not a specialist of fussball, Walter.

I think Ribery is currently Bavarian and injured.

Maybe he will heal before November, to join l'équipe de France.
