I thought the most important thing to know is the word reflects a racist historical usage and should not be used by people today
NO
SHOULD is a personal position, which you are free to hold, so long as you don't demand that others agree with or conform to your beliefs. If you believe that you should not use the term then don't. But you are not free to control other people's choice on the matter.
The thread is what is the meaning of the word. If someone wants to travel to how the word is used then they should talk about how the word is used, not how they THINK or FEEL that the word should be used. Keep in mind that the N word is really two words, nigger and nigga. Nigga usage is:
Quote:
In practice, its use and meaning are heavily dependent on context.[1] Presently, the word nigga is used more liberally among younger members[2] of all races and ethnicities in the United States, although its use by persons not of African descent is still widely viewed as unacceptable and hostile, even when used without intentional prejudice. In addition to African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Latin Americans and European Americans[3][4] have adopted the term as part of their vernacular.
There is conflicting popular opinion on whether there is any meaningful difference between nigga and nigger as a spoken term.[5] Many people consider the terms to be equally pejorative, and the use of nigga both in and outside African American communities remains controversial.[6] H. Lewis Smith, author of Bury that Sucka: A Scandalous Affair with the N-word, believes that "replacing the 'er' with an 'a' changes nothing other than the pronunciation"[7] and the African American Registry notes, "Brother (Brotha) and Sister (Sistah or Sista) are terms of endearment. Nigger was and still is a word of disrespect."[8] The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a civil rights group, condemns use of both nigga and nigger.[5]
Some African-Americans express considerable offense when referred to as a nigga by Caucasian people, but not if they are called the same by other African-Americans, or by some other minority, as a term of endearment.[5] In this case, the term may be seen either as a symbol of brotherhood,[9] similar to the usage of the words dude and bro, and its use outside a defined social group an unwelcome cultural appropriation. Critics have derided this as a double standard.[3]
Nigger and Nigga are not dead words (archaic), those who think that they are are wrong. Those who teach that the words are historical artifacts are either wrong or they are liars.
I should have said, "should not be used by people today, if they want Foofie to associate with them!" That makes sense.
The topic of this thread seems very appropriate to the following question.
Do you believe the person who has used multiple screen names, among them, genoves, is actually mentally disabled?
Nope, but for the first time, in over eight years of dealing with this plucky fella' he finally revealed the source of his pain and mental anguish. He was not promoted and a black or woman got the job he wanted. It reminds me of the Jesse Helms political advertisement in '90.
I, on the other hand, have considered that very possibility quite seriously and quite some time ago. It's one of the main reasons I try not to engage with a multiple-personality joker like that on any kind of serious basis. There are times when this character is quite out of control and not really responsible for what he posts.
Merry, you might well be entirely correct. It is quite true that Schizophrenia presents itself with delusions and formal thought disorder. I guess we are doing the real world a favor by securing the safety of massy's neighborhood in keeping him off the streets at night while he posts on a2k.
Generally, I've just thought of him as an idiot-savant, though heavy shaded to the idiot side.
btw: The Raymond character in "Rainman" was not based upon an autistic person, as Massy presumes, but an idiot-savant.

GLORY BE the US Constitution, which envisions both the right to free speech for all and the right to associate as we wish.
Poor Kuvasz--He thinks he knows more about Movies than Roger Ebert.

Rain Man

Is it possible to have a relationship with an autistic person? Is it possible to have a relationshbip with a cat? I do not intend the comparison to be demeaning to the autistic; I am simply trying to get at something. I have useful relationships with both of my cats, and they are important to me. But I never know what the cats are thinking.
That is precisely the situation that Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is faced with in "Rain Man." His brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), is "high-level" autistic. He can carry on conversations, stick to a schedule, compile baseball statistics, memorize dinner menus and become disturbed when anything upsets his routine. He can also count 46 spilled toothpicks in an instant and calculate square roots in a flash. But what he is thinking? There is a moment in "Rain Man" that crystalizes all the frustrations that Charlie feels about Raymond, a moment when he cries out, "I know there has to be somebody inside there!" But who? And where? "Rain Man" is so fascinating because it refuses to supply those questions with sentimental but unrealistic answers. This is not a movie like "Charly" in which there is a miracle cure
*************************************************************
EBERT SAYS THAT RAYMOND IS HIGH LEVEL AUTISTIC.
KUVASZ IS, AS USUAL, WRONG AGAIN!
And because of this, Kuvasz shows his high intolerance of Autistics. He delights in making fun of them!

The reason you try not to engage with a multiple-personality joker like that is that if you did, I would hand you your head and you know it. Name calling is an old trick used by those who do not have the ability to debate. It will not stop me from showing up the defects of the far left wingers.
Your dime store psychiatry is pitifully erroneous. Everyone who is able to post is RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THEY POST. Only the goofy left wing takes a position that the past environment of a black thug who murders someone in cold blood or viciously rapes someone is an excuse for his actions.
Some on these threads have decried the use of AdHominem. With the left wing, most of whom cannot debate after they use up a few shibboleths, are left with their fingers in their mouths and must resort to AdHominems.
I do not, like the poster, Cyclops, reveal my background completely. I learned that Cyclops will be married. I noted his picture and his lovely bride.
I noted that he is still a graduate student. Those are facts which he revealed.
Because of those facts, I view him in a different light. He posts a great deal but almost never gives evidence or documentation. He has not finished his graduate degree. Therefore, he is, as far as I am concerned, a callow y0uth.
However, Merry Andrew, you have learned no such facts from me. Your crude adhominem attempt to silence me by asserting that I was not promoted or lost my job to a black woman is not borne out anywhere in my background.
Of course, if I were doing amateur psychology as you are, based on nothing but conjecture, I could come up with the finding that you are a faggot since you call yourself "Merry" Merry is defined as "laughingly gay"
BUT I NEVER WOULD DO SO. MERRY ANDREW. I DO NOT LIKE SOME WHO WISH TO INTIMIDATE, PRACTICE VOODOO PSYCHOLOGY.
I know nothing about you except what you post and that your name is Merry Andrew. You. apparently, think you possess insight based on ??????

if that is important to them, thay shoud carefully conform to ALL of Foofie 's criteria.
Those of us to whom that is less important, need not bother with that.
For MY part, I am more approachable.
I am more tolerant of diverse opinions and freedom of their expression,

@panzade,
Thank You, Panzade. I do accept your research. May I respectfully( you remember I complimented your approach a few days ago) suggest that you refrain from the use of the term-_"Shut Up". It is not respectful!

I find it amusing that posters like Kuvasz and Merry Andrew would try to utilize name calling, puerile amateur psychology and Ad Hominem in order to stifle comments about African-Americans. That reeks of desperation and a lack of ability to rebut errors( if they are indeed errors).
Kuvasz might be astounded to find that I have in my Library FIVE(5) books written by one of the most brilliant men of our day--Dr.Thomas Sowell. Of course, Dr. Sowell is an Afro-American. I also have writings by Walter Williams, Shelby Steele and Bill Cosby. Does that amaze Kuvasz and/or Merry Andrew?
Has Merry Andrew ever read Dr. Sowell's magnificent books?
In one of his great works(Civil Rights--Rhetoric or Reality?) Dr. Sowell wrote:
P. 85
"If (according to black leaders) crime is a product of poverty and discrimination as they say endlessly, why was there so much less of it when poverty and discrimination were much worse than today? If massive programs are the only hope to reduce poverty in the ghetto, why was there so much less violence long before anyone ever thought of these programs? Perhaps much more to the point, have the philosophies and policies so much supported by black leaders contributed to the decline in community and personal standards, and in family responsiblity, so painfully visible today?...
The negative features of black life may be far more politically usable, as in the "long hot summer" of violence that was routinely predicted each spring if various political demands were not met."
And( Dr.Sowell knows that black children are failing miserably in their studies) in his great work--RACE AND CULTURE-A WORLD VIEW-
P. 172
"In the United States, blacks of above average socioenconomic status have not averaged as high IQ as whites of lower socioecnomic status and neither blacks, Mexican Americans, nor American Indians from famililes with incomes of over $50,000 and above scored as well on the quantatative portion of the SAT in 1981 as Asian Americans from families with incomes of $6,000 or less. The environment that matters for this purpose may be cultural rather than economic."

Now, when faced with evidence and documentation, the left wingers Kuvasz and Merry Andrew cannot rebut the substance. What they can do, of course, is what they have done over and over--name call and utilize Ad Hominem devices.
I am ready, if they wish, to repost the evidence above in a later place in this thread so that they do not have to travel too far to try to rebut it.
Merry, you might well be entirely correct. It is quite true that Schizophrenia presents itself with delusions and formal thought disorder. I guess we are doing the real world a favor by securing the safety of massy's neighborhood in keeping him off the streets at night while he posts on a2k.
Another puerile attempt at AD Hominem and intimidation.
And a post showing an very poor understanding of schizophrenia and its manifestations.
Schjizophrenia plainly runs in families. Having two parents with the disorder puts you at a 40 per cent risk and having a schizophrenic brother is a 9 percent risk. Since neither of my parents or my brother or sister has ever been diagnosed as Schizophrenic, the likelihood that I am schizophrenic is very low.
But, what about Kuvasz and Merry Andrew? We can't leave them out of the game, can we? Of course, I would be descending to their Ad Hominem level by assigning them to categories for which I have no real evidence(this does not bother them however). If I were to do so, I might aver that both Kuvasz and Merry Andrew are afflicted with

great feelings of guilt since they, at one time, harbored negative feelings against black people and are now determined to repent and to show the world what selflessly tolerant and loving indivduals they are. I would say that if I were Kuvasz and Merry Andrew--the AdHominem type but since I do not believe in AdHominem. I withdraw my diagnosis.

Since Dr. Sowell, Shelby Steele, Walter Williams and Bill Cosby have written so well about the topic--"Talking to your kid about "the n-word", I really must discharge my responsibility to let the posters on able2know become aware of what these brilliant African-Americans have written about this topic.
