@oralloy,
Problem is, the prison term does nothing to make the dead person whole again. He or she is still dead. What is important is to stop the crime BEFORE it happens. One way is to remove the means to commit the crime..

@MontereyJack,
Maybe. But that's not what you are actually doing. All you are doing is focusing on which method a criminal uses to carry out their crimes, without making any attempt to prevent the crimes.

And when you try to violate people's civil liberties for fun, you aren't even doing that.

What matters is that people ARE killed.

If that's what matters, then why don't you focus on that instead of all this nonsense over the method used to kill them?

MontereyJack wrote:
And despite other methods of killing being available, guns are year after year the preferred method of preventable killing.

As you just admitted, the method of the killing is not really significant.

You go after the obvious problem. Duh.

But you aren't doing anything about the problem. All you are doing is focusing on the method that is used to carry out the killings.

Which doesn't mean yhou ignore other methods of killing. You work on preventing them too. Double duh.

Except you aren't doing that. All you are doing is worrying about the fact that someone is killed with a gun instead of being killed by some other method.

And when you try to violate people's civil liberties for fun, you aren't even doing that.

@oralloy,
The point is: alcohol abuse tend to kill those drinking it, not the random school kid or mall shopper out there. Glenn is comparing apples and oranges.

Bottom line for me is: if an overwhelming majority of Americans want tighter gun control (as apparently they do, then they should get it. Down with the dictatorship of the gun nuts!

@Olivier5,
If anyone wants my support for gun legislation, the first step needs to be for progressives to stop violating people's civil liberties.

The second step needs to be for adequate compensation to be paid to all of the people whose civil liberties have been violated for so long.

After that, we can talk about passing new gun laws that don't violate people's civil liberties. If that day ever comes, I'll want every new gun control law to be tied to legislation that also advances gun rights.

Fine. It's just pure pointless snark. Happy now?

It wasn't that either. It was "me denying a request".

@Olivier5,
If you don't get support from moderates like me, don't expect to get any new gun laws.

@Glennn,
Don't tell me what I believe. You're trying to change the subject by pointing over there.

The measures taken to stop drink driving look like they're working.

That's not the case with mass shooting.

@oralloy,
It's not a matter of changing people's views, because there's already a large majority in favor of tighter gun laws.

@Olivier5,
The will of the majority is irrelevant. The gun control movement says no, so too bad for the majority.

Until they too get shot at, or their kids. Then they will change their tune.

@Olivier5,
Unlikely.

The most likely reaction from a gun owner would be to shoot back.

You mean black folks should shoot murderous policemen down?

@Olivier5,
Murderous policemen tend to be rare. Although I do know that they exist, what with my family history and all.

@Olivier5,
About a hundred years ago, my great uncle was shot and fatally wounded by a corrupt sheriff who was trying to steal his horses.

My great uncle responded to being shot by going and getting his shotgun, and firing a 12 gauge slug into the back of the sheriff's head.

The county was pretty upset about it. To this day the the local paper in that area still runs an occasional article about their poor precious dead sheriff.

My entire extended family is pretty proud of my great uncle. We recently had "the shotgun" restored in fact. It's an important family heirloom.

@oralloy,
Good advice for the families of Eric Garner and of Trayvon Martin, you think?
