You can go back in time and prevent a great catastrophe. Which one would you prevent?

The American Revolution. If the British Empire had of changed due to force from the colonies, we would never have had WWI and WWII, and a lot of little wars to begin with...we may have had a central world government by now, and what possibilities could flow out of that ?

@Ionus,
I totally disagree. We would have had other wars. Read Years of Rice and Salt for an alternate history that isn't that alternate.

@Blickers,
Yes, the planet would be better off without humans.

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
Gotta be WW-I.

One thing which might have stopped it would have been for TR to invite European military officials and nobility to some sort of a large field and have them watch what happened when 20,000 straw dummies mounted on horses charged into interlocking machinegun fire.

@plainoldme,
Imagine the British Empire (including USA) as a democratic single block - who is there to have a war with, let alone someone who could beat it. The opportunity for it to democratise was lost with the loss of the 13 colonies.A great catastrophe.

@Mr Stillwater,
So, you wouldn't have stopped slavery, if you had the chance?

@Mr Stillwater,

And let's not forget those free men who, although black, took up arms in defence of the Revolution...
But what did it get black people ? The British promised to abolish slavery in the colonies if they won and they had lots of blacks fight for them too, and Indians.

@chai2,
I liked your post...you show considerable knowledge of the true history of religion and I would like to discuss that with you some day.

@Foxfyre,
I particularly like the idea of the military being put in a moral dilemma...not exactly at the top of the list in the training schedule...but they chose a practical solution rather than a hand wringing guilt trip.

World wide despotism, with supereffective surveillance from every direction,
and no one left free to come to the rescue.
We 'd become the Borg. I think that will happen.

No; permanent slavery to government (of our own creating) is very negative,
from which only death is positive.

@OmSigDAVID,
Are you an anarchist ? What do you see as negative about your anti-government stance ?

No, but I prefer anarchy to totalitarianism.

Your question presumes that I see something negative about it.

I 'd prevent slavery, leaving the blacks undisturbed in Africa.

It is only sensible to believe that nothing is perfect. You assume that your opinion has found the only perfect things made my man. I doubt that.

@NickFun,
So when black people complain about slavery, they arent serious ? They were better off to leave Africa ?

@Ionus,
Lord there is zero question that the descents of the black slaves brought to what is now the US are on the whole one hell of a lot better off then those who ancestors remain in Africa.

In fact, given that the men and women ship over were highly likely to had already been slaves, being ship over to the colonies even given the death rate on slave ships was not the worst fate they could had faced.

White men did not leave their ships to chase happy black folks around the jungle but instead purchased them from either black tribal leaders or the good old humane Arab slave traders.

OK, to accomodate Nick, for his fun, I 'd leave slavery intact
and pull them out of Africa.
