GWB = Monkey/Chimp = AOK with democrats
BHO = Monkey = OMFG with democrats

Yeah - cause there's nothing different about comparing blacks with monkeys, right?

Christ.

Ditto.

But also, if GWB can look like a monkey (and he somewhat does), why can't BHO look like a monkey (and he somewhat does too, at least as much as GWB does). This has nothing to do with the color of one's skin, but more based on one's facial features (roundish face, ears that stick out, etc).

It's ok for a white guy to be a called a monkey, but not a black guy.

It sounds like some are being OVERLY sensitive and LOOKING for racism to fullfill some hole in their being or maybe due to their own insecurities.

Excerpt:

The Boston publisher of the beloved children's books featuring the cartoon monkey character said yesterday that it's considering legal action against a Georgia tavern owner who's selling T-shirts comparing Curious George to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Anyone not offended by the tee shirts has little humanity to boast about.

How could anyone who knows anything about American history not find this offensive?

While it is just insulting to compare a white man to a chimp, to do so to black man is to recall (with longing) a time of lynchings, Jim Crow and socially excepted racism.

If Bush was a black man few would stoop so low. Shame on the people who shrug this image off as just a joke.

It must be a generational thing.

Under 30 here, and if it's ok for a white guy to be a chimp, equal opportunity says it's ok for a black guy to be called a chimp.

Or maybe they're color blind and try to look at things equally between the races.

Will we EVER be free of racism as long as there are things that are OK to do/say IF a person is white, but not OK if a person is black? Will we? Ever?

The only way to free ourselves of racism is to treat everyone equally.

Then I must chalk up your stance to ignorance, Mr. Marporsche. I suggest you study a little American history. I have nieces and nephews your age and they would all be appalled at this. Such images go beyond skin color and into the fabric of our heritage as a nation - and that is why is so disturbing.

Apparently I am.

Sorry, I'll remind myself that the way we FIX racism in this country is by focusing on everybody's race so we can know when it is ok to insult a black guy differently then we'd insult a white guy.

The way to fix RACEism is by INCREASING or FOCUS on it, and treating the different races differently.

Got it, makes loads of sense.

Could an African American call Obama a monkey?

Could a European? An African? A Chinese?

Or is it just that a White guy can't call a black guy a monkey?

I was never involved in any slavery, I've never had a racist thought or action, and I truely could care less if someone is black/white.....but

I'm a racist because I want to treat people equally? Seriously, that is what you're saying right?

No, it's a question of having even an inkling of historical awareness. I aint that older (36), and none of my friends would even think of it.

Drawing a cartoon picturing a Jew as a leech is also not the same as drawing Bush or Hillary as one. Why not? Because it is the very imaging and logic and view that was used to scorn and demonize Jews - into the concentration camps.

Same here. As GW said, while it is insulting to compare a white man to a chimp, to do so to black man is to recall a time of lynchings, Jim Crow and socially accepted racism. Black man = monkey / animal; that's the language of slavery, of segregation and lynching, where blacks are either or both child-like, ignorant animals that are better off under the white man's rule or dangerous primitive animals that should be feared and repressed. That endlessly repeated equation was instrumental in justifying slavery and Jim Crow and instilling racial disdain and fear through the generations.

Every American knows that, or bloody well should. I'm sure that pub owner down in Georgia knows. To make the blacks = monkeys equation even as you know that is a demonstration of complete dickness and yeah, racism. To not be aware of it is just ridiculous - dont you have history classes in school?

Well the way to fix racism certainly isnt to pretend like nothing ever happened, like there never was slavery, never was Jim Crow, never were lynchings, and to laugh it off if it turns out that others do remember it, and get pretty f*cking pissed off if people use the same language and imagery that was used to create and justify those things.

A little bit of historical awareness goes a long way, yeah - I mean, it's just 50 years ago, fer chrissakes. It's not OK to portray Jews as money-grabbing meanies or blacks as monkeys, no. How f*cking obvious can that be?

I think you don't understand the symbolism and the social collective conscience that is being invoked. This is not about treating people equally, it's about stirring a very old pot of hatred. I don't think you are a racist for not understanding this, but it does make you a poor historian of our culture.

Here is a non-American view of why most people are disgusted by the monkey comparison:

Monkey Business No Laughing Matter

So in how many years will it be acceptable Nimh.

50 years is 22 years before I was even BORN. When I have a kid next year it will have been 51 years before she was born. When she has it kid it will have been 76 years before they're born.

When can myself or my children or my grand children STOP PAYING FOR THE SINS OF MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER.

Obamas ancestry has nothing to do with slavery.

Obamas Mom I am sure is quite insulted by you all who ignore his heritage.

Those of you who are stuck on his skin color are actually the racists.

I love that quote from GW.

Person A: "Racism is the inequal treatment of other people based solely on their race."

Person B: "How do we solve the inequal treatment of others? Should we treat everyone equally?"

Person A: "Oh No, we can't do that."

Person B: "But wouldn't the solution to treating people unfairly be to treat them fairly?"

Person A: "Shhh, keep it down, you're being a little racist."

Person B: "Huh!?"

Person A: "The solution to solving racism is to treat the different races differently then you treat white people."

Person B: "So the solution to treating people unfairly is to treat people unfairly?"

Person A: "Now you got it!"
