Thanks ci I think you highlight a very important point. Despite all our attempts to accommodate their thinking, they are fundamentally different. They have a logic, but their brains are wired up differently from ours.

I don't see the logic of the "terrorists" to be that fundamentally different from that of folks like Tom Delay or Ralph Reed, or Pat Robertson.

hobit, You do need to admit there is a significant difference between those in this country involved with "our" politics and the Muslim extremists as somewhat a different kind of terrorism.

Maintain control there, bud. They are as attracted to urine in the water as blood.

And that difference would be.....?

I'm with hobitbob here. You are right, "they are fundamentally different" and its basically impossible "to accommodate their thinking" - but the they in question is: terrorists, extremists, fanatics, zealots, whether inspired by religion or ideology. Their mindset is no different from that of the Red Army Faction (RAF) folks or those Japanse Aum folks ... and got relatively little to do with y'r average Turkish or Moroccan Muslim.

I just hope we won't dismiss them (or annihilate them) without understanding the difference between them and those they say they represent, or without understanding their antipathy to us. Some part of this equation surely requires self-examination on our part. Or the situation will repeat itself in the form of a new "evil" we haven't even anticipated.

Couldn't agree more Tart. Do we blame the hornets for stinging us, or should we consider not poking the nest?

Hell, Steve, you jes' go into your shed, pick the most toxic stuff you can see, boast to your neighbor that you're gonna get 'em, and then you annihilate them in a cloud of fumes. Only much, much later does your kid die of brain cancer from the exposure to toxins and you find that the mosquito problem you've been having would have been alleviated by leaving the wasps to do their job.

That's right Tart----sit down and have a good ole " heart to heart" with them. I expect there will be a "glint of evil" in their eye as they wait for just the right opportunity to "cut your throat".

Since you're not jewish you might last a few minutes longer than Daniel Pearl but I wouldn't count on seeing Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm surprised at your comment tartarin. I don't advocate the eradication of Muslims, but I would like to see the intellectual defeat of Islam. And Judaism. And Christianity, Cannibalism and all other organised religion.

Who exactly are the wasps and who the mosquitos in your analogy? Don't understand, sorry.

Mostly I was saying, don't poke the nest, Steve, but was riffing on an American way of coping which is outlawed in my household!

I might, however, use toxins against organized religion, but I would start with Christianity, it being the problem we have at home (sheesh -- our home problems aren't getting a whole lot of attention these days).

Perc -- I remembered your interest in Wahhabism when I noticed the following article in the 12/1 Nation on "Egypt's Islamist Dilemma." Haven't done more than skim it, but here's a link in case you'd enjoy taking a look:

(Let me know if you can't get through -- I may be able to only because I'm a subscriber. Dunno. But I can copy and PM it to you if you can't...)
