715a. I think fondly of last night, revisiting the sites that offer William Reiser's sci/fi books. Bill was my on line friend. He died not so many years ago, but not before helping me with a few manuscripts on his Writers Association (defunct). Bill knew for a few years his days were numbered, and it at times affected his judgement, but, after all, he had a lot to live for and felt not a whit ready to go.
716a. I think how stupid our laws can be, at the moment focused on the nursing home that cares for my mother in law. When she is in the wheel chair, she tends to slide forward, due to there being no foot rests on the chair. The rests were removed, because something about them causes serious chafing. So, they had been putting a cushion, with a raised portion in the front center that solved the slipping problem. Then, they decided the cushion constitutes a restraint. They no longer use it. So now we have to get a doctor prescription to put the damned thing in her chair. Meantime, she could end in a heap on the deck.
717a. I think my hands are the most washed of all hands. Within minutes, seconds, even, Punky the dog has gotten to them in one way or another. She is one of those animals that digs holes and the soil is loose and sandy. She stays dirty, no matter what.
718a. I think we had the most colored fall ever, for this neck of the woods. The leaves dangle, still, as they darken and let loose in increasing numbers. The brown of dozens of dead pines actually enhances the effect, ensconced, along with oak, sycamore, gumball, cottonwood and other, dotted thickly among the green of the living pines. A sight we have not been used to around here.
719a. I think I am ready for some Texans football this day. Wondering how long they can win games without a quality quarterback.
720a. I think Punky the dog is getting overly spoiled. But, what can you do? She has nothing to do all day long, except to expect loving attention, eat and dig holes. Oh, yes; and bark at passers by.
My late beloved dog, Holly and her companion, Baby, were hole diggers, too. Their greatest engineering achievement, a three and one half diameter circle, dug in the back yard, remains, as their monument, after more than ten years.
@edgarblythe,
718a: Last week, our neighborhood had the most leaves fall in a very short period of time. The sweeper usually doesn't sweep the streets when the leaves are piled high, but almost everybody had big piles in front of their houses. What they did was bring big trucks and tractors to haul the leaves away before the sweeper took over. The trees are almost bare now, but we still get a sprinkling of leaves on our front and back yards.
721a. I think I need a tutorial on the works word processor. I converted a PDF to edit it for a project. Now, quite a few lines will not cooperate when I try to set them into orderly paragraphs. Hate to start a document from scratch, as it is over a hundred pages.
722a. I think these last days before New Year will be frantic at times, but will drag for long periods. I definitely intend driving to Austin - perhaps as early as Friday evening. Will return by Sunday PM or even earlier. I still need to check my spare tire this week.
723a. I think our nice weather may get swept away by the front tonight. I need to paint some walls today, if at all possible.
724a. I think I would like to repeat today's quote here:
The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a god or not.
Eric Hoffer
725a. I think this last weekend's football was pretty exciting. My home team lost, but Washington won and Green Bay lost.
@edgarblythe,
721a: All you need to do is start a fresh page, cut and paste onto it, and wollah, you have your revised page.
@cicerone imposter,
I've done that, CI, but the sentences refuse to line up into proper paragraphs.
I googled and it helped me find the unformatted text selection. Piece of cake.
726a. I think how precocious kids can be. My niece reported her son wants to be a policeman like his father, so that he can go fishing all the time.
727a. I think last night's rain must be about done. Water is standing in the ditch by the street. First time that has happened in a very long time.
728a. Terra Nova's final for the season set up a challenge for next season. How to come up with stories that no longer have a connection to the present? They gave a huge clue at the end. They will possibly resort to Lost's tactics of introducing thoroughly irrational premises into the plots.
729a. Fox will premiere a new series called Alcatraz next month. The guy that played Hurley on Lost will be a major part of it.
730a. I think I will no longer preface each point by writing "I think."
@edgarblythe,
727a: Snow pack in California is one of the lowest recorded in history, and that's after last year when it was one of the highest snow pack in history.
Climate change is upon us.
731a. I have been revisiting the diet choices that some recommend for specific blood types. For instance, as I am blood type A (it makes no distinction between A- and A+, for some reason I have not found) I am asked to eat no meat, other than chicken, turkey and Cornish hens. There is a great list of sea foods that are allowable and an equal list of not allowable. No cheese or milk, except from goats. No condiments or peppers. And so on. I wonder if any readers have taken such lists seriously?
732a. It is being said that Michael Douglas and his throat cancer has been seen smoking cigarettes. My father in law had his lungs collapse a couple of three times and more, due mainly to tobacco use and yet he snuck a smoke at every opportunity. I was fortunate to be able to quit, almost twenty years ago. My wife has been quit about seventeen years.
733a. Now that I have learned how to manage my new word processor documents, editing and reformatting one is almost fun.
734a. Two more work days until the holiday weekend.
@edgarblythe,
731a: I believe in moderation for most things that has to do with my diet. I try to keep my weight down at 150, exercise, and try not to eat too much sugar (borderline diabetic). I eat chicken (without the skin) and more fruits and salads. All this goes to pot when I go on cruises, and even find myself using butter on bread. The next cruise is on January 3 for ten days to the Western Caribbean - to warm up my bones.
@cicerone imposter,
735a. I think eating chicken skin is disgusting. Eating chicken flesh is bad enough--poor little things.
Chickens have the misfortune to be made of meat. Sad but true.
The beaks are good added to menudo.
735a. It is raining outside. I think it will dry up in a few hours. Still planning on doing siding. We have two big buildings, one smaller building and a third of a big building to complete.
736a. Except for the part about not eating beef and pork, I had been pretty much following the Type A diet, without knowing before what was recommended. Which is what led me to ask if others knew about it or followed it.
737a. Here is my personal Merry Christmas to readers of the thread. May you all be happy and may it be sustained throughout the coming year.
@edgarblythe,
The same to you, edgar. Keep well, and keep this thread going for another 50 years.
@edgarblythe,
Happy holidays to you and all. I'm a follower, obviously.
@cicerone imposter,
50? Heck, I want it to carry on at least sixty more.
@Ragman,
I depreciate it, ragman. Merry Christmas.
