Ah, perhaps that's what I was thinking of. Didn't think if texting was costing that a regular phone call was free.

Well, if that's the case, all the more reason that something needs to be done to revamp the voting procedure.

Howard Stern is only fostering a previously organized effort. Check out "votefortheworst.com".

Yes, so I see. Rather ruins the show, I think.

I really think that the voting system needs to be re-vamped in light of this sort of activity.

American Idol
Green Witch...you posted the following:

"This is when I get totally frustrated with this show. Mediocre people like Sunjaya and Haley are still in and good people get booted. It just makes the show weak and pointless. It also seems to indicate who has the most relatives who are willing to hit redial and pay for voting over and over."

Maybe this is the reason that people like Sunjaya stay in the competition. Obviously you don't vote, because if you did, you would know that voting is toll-free. The only time it costs money to vote is if you are calling from a cell phone and even then, only the normal airtime charges are being applied to your account.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't like the way the show is going, why don't you vote? I don't vote. I don't like Sunjaya. But I also don't sit and complain about how the show doesn't work. Why? Because I understand that the very reason it doesn't work is because of people like you and I who don't even try to vote for their favorites.

Just a thought.

I don't think you're being rude. It's true I don't vote. I don't vote because I don't buy CD's or have an iPod. I don't think it would be fair for me to support a contestant in the competition when I'm not going to support their career afterwards. I would rather the music buying public pick the person they want to give a musical career to. I do however find the show entertaining.

Well, I see last night was no different again. Sanjaya wasn't even in the bottom 3. I was surprised to see Phil there. I think he did a great job with the Police song that he sung.

I made a comment about voting earlier, too. I see that the phone calls for voting are toll-free and it only costs if you're text messaging. I still feel though that the present set-up needs re-vamping, whether I personally vote (which I don't) or not. One vote per telephone number makes much more sense.

I still feel that America's Got Talent has got the edge on that.

I am waiting for the Geratric American Idol spin off to try out. If I could get into the top 20 my price would go way the hell up. Laughing

Foxfyre,

You are right. There are many things that are out of our control. But saying that we have no control over the winner of American Idol is like saying we have no control over who our next president is. If we have no control over who is elected, then we should tell everybody not to vote. Right?

I don't think there is anything wrong with the voting system. I think there is something wrong with the voters. A lot of people don't vote for their favorites because they think that their vote doesn't really count. When you have a million people not voting for this reason, it really makes a difference in the competition.

I wasn't discussing Howard Stern, but now that you bring it up...I think he is a fool for trying to sabotage the show. He's telling all these people to vote for Sunjaya because he doesn't like the show, but here's the funny thing: all his followers who are choosing to vote for Sunjaya have to watch the show to find out what number he is. I just think it is hilarious that Howard is bringing more viewers to a show he despises.

Good point! And, maybe that's why the producers of AI have no intention of revamping the voting system, I fear. Controversy is good for business.

The folks who advertise on the show must be rubbing their hands in glee!

LOL. You're right re Howard promoting the show Smile

I still think he will have less and less ability to skew the vote as the field narrows, however, and the pool is smaller for those who do vote. I certainly haven't agreed with the winner in previous shows and it could very well be that my favorite won't win this year either. And I'll complain about it (again) even though I didn't choose to spend my time calling in votes. I think Kelly Clarkson should have been the winner in Season One. I think Carrie Underwood should have been the winner in Season Four. I think there was greater talent in the pool than all the other winners in other years.

Now you figure, this is one of the highest rated television shows, but there sure as heck aren't 60 million people watching out there. I'm guessing a relatively small number are actually calling in votes, and the contestants with the biggest organized fan bases are getting the largest number of votes. Howard has no doubt created or at least increased a fan base for Sanjaya.

I have only voted once and that's when there was just Taylor, Kat, and Elliott left last year and I was curious to see what happened when you did call in a vote. Haven't been inclined to do it since, either.

I get my kicks watching the kids do their thing every week regardless of who 'wins' but I do miss some more than others when they are voted off.

Hey Bear, I'll vote for you in the geriatric competition though. That is unless I decide to try out myself. I used to be able to belt out a song fairly competently and maybe I still can. Who knows?

All things being equal, Melinda will probably win, but don't rule out Lakisha. She's a strong contender, although I think Jordan is doing well also.

Obviously Sanjaya should be gone, but I think Haley should have gone, but unfortunately (because I think he's good) it might be Phil.

The other two males, Blake and Chris R., it's a close tie between those guys, I feel.

I noticed some of you laughing at Howard Stern for accidentally promoting a show he hates. You are all as wrong as you can be. He is not a stupid person. Do you really think he cares about American Idol? He cares about one thing and one thing only: HOWARD STERN. And latching onto the humongous popularity of American Idol is only helping him. I'd almost forgotten about the guy since he went to satellite, but now he's in the news again, and that's all he cares about. He's a self-promotion genius! Any positive effect it has on AI is, I'm sure, about as important to him as the opinions of a bunch of AI fans on some stupid web forum.

Oh, and by the way, GO SANJAYA!!
