I can't see Tony doing something like that. The facinating thing about his character is that he has a deep seated sense of justice. Granted, it's a little wacked (pun intented) but he has very black and white lines of right and wrong.

He and Carmella especially are revealed as biased and prejudicial about many matters -- their chagrin over homosexuality and African Americans is especially telling of their character. Carmella only plays the saint and she even convinced her Catholic priest friend she was, rejecting his friendship (and other things that seemed to be creeping into her head).

Exactly, Carmella can be won over very quickly by a sable coat or a new beach house. She is addicted to the lifestyle. Meadow's the only one who sees the hypocricy.

You're right as Anthony Jr. seems drawn towards the life style just like his father was. Carmella is chagrined over the adultery which she's known about for years but doesn't seem terribly upset over the fact that she knows Tony has killed. It's an interesting setup for the writing of the final season so I can see why they've postponed it until 2004.

I'm really enjoying watching the whole shebang from the beginning. What a character study that Tony is! I can't help but love him even though I know he's bad. Eeek! What does that say about me? (hee hee)

Actually all the male characters come of as good ole boys -- the ones who have betrayed the trust and are whacked seem to deserve it. Tony having all his psychological problems (he is seeing a psychiatrist, after all) just adds to the sympathy for the character. One can even allow his infidelity because Carmella didn't seem to be all that upset about it until the last two or three episodes. The writers probably have the most difficult decisions to make ever in ending a TV series. The best ending ever so far?
The last show of "Newhart."

Is "The Sopranos" going the way of "Dallas"?

Sources are saying that several dead characters are signed up for the next season and will appear in "dream" sequences. The list of the whacked and merely deceased includes Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy), David Proval (Richie Aprile), John Heard (Detective Makazian), Al Sapienza (Mikey Palmice), Dan Grimaldi (Spoons Parisi) and Jason Cerbone (Jackie Aprile Jr). And the whacked of all whacked, Joe Pantoliano (Ralphie Cifaretto), is also on-board for another go-round.

No word on whether he'll have his head or not:

Extremely interesting -- a leak from HBO about the course of this series is nearly as noteworthy as a leak from the White House!

I heard about that this morning in the paper. If it actually happens, it is my opinion that The Sopranos will be jumping the shark.

I can see Tony, sans Carmella for the time being (who knows where that will go) would have nightmares about his dead colleagues. Before, they were talking fish.

sadly i think it will get there despite david chase's promise that it won't.
big pussy did come back in dream sequences before. as did tony's italian girlfriend.
they'll probably be short dream sequences with lots of symbolism so that you know it's a dream. it won't be a "dallas." it better not be.

still it can't get worse than the CG inserts of tony's mom. that was the one episode i just couldn't bear watching.

oh and about the poll. where's furio?! he was my favorite character.

Okay, I'm going to have a moderator try and fix this as the first page or pages are missing including my initial topic posting. I don't know if there is room for Furio as there is a limit to how many entries there are on a poll but will try. Since this January begins their final season, I'm sure we will get more votes! Ralphie was also one of my favorites but wasn't a regular cast member (actually a regular cast dismember). Very Happy

(In other words, the poll is of characters who are running through the entire series without getting offed as in Alice in Wonderland "off with his head" Very Happy ).

Quote:
When the fifth season of "The Sopranos" begins on HBO March 7, the focus turns to something series creator David Chase read in the newspaper, about all the mobsters taken down in the 1980s, when he says law enforcement "broke the back of the mafia."

"A lot of those guys are getting out of jail, they've served their time and they're hitting the streets again," Chase told TV critics by satellite from Paris. Sitting onstage at critics' Hollywood press tour was actor Steve Buscemi, who joins the cast as Tony Soprano's recently sprung cousin. Asked if he survives the fifth season intact, Buscemi replied, "I keep my head, if that's what you mean," referencing last season's brutal decapitation of Joe Pantoliano's character.

Surviving this season would put him into the show's last. This year's 13 episodes will be followed by 10 that Chase has agreed with HBO to film in 2005. "Those 10 will be the finale," Chase insisted, designed to "pay off" storylines and "see the actors have their moment."

Close to end for 'Sopranos'

And go here for a Sopranos trivia quiz. I scored 8 of 10. Mad

More:

Quote:
One of those "graduates" will be Tony's cousin on his mother's side, Tony Blundetto, an old running buddy played by Buscemi who has recently been released from a long stretch in prison.

Buscemi, who directed the infamous "Pine Barrens" episode of "The Sopranos" where the Russian guy escaped into the woods (no word from Chase on whether that will be resolved in 2004), is one of several inspired casting choices in the new season. Robert Loggia, David Strathairn, Tim Daly and Frankie Valli also have roles.

Thanks, PDiddie - some enlightening stuff! One thing that has always been evident about this series and others on HBO -- the collaborators enjoy telling these stories. Too much television is labored and overwrought -- the skeleton of the edifice shows. I'm afraid that's my objection to CSI. The characters don't seem to be real unlike "The Sopranos" where the cast now seems like they could be your nefarious neighbors.

Catching up.
I loved the early series, then they put it on too late here and I got out of the habit of watching it.
I'm going to get the whole thing on DVD and indulge myself.
It is a masterly show. One of the nice "little touches" is when somebody has some bad luck and they're discussing it in the nightclub, all the strippers and pole-dancers are so concerned and motherly.
You remember, in the very first show, when Tony's fledgling-hoodlum nephew said he had a bad stomach, and he said his mother told him not to go to work?

What about the time Carmela pulled an automatic rifle on Meadow, who was climbing into the house using a ladder?

Priceless.

There is a lot of sardonic humor -- the bowling ball rolling down the staircase during the dismembering (sic) of Ralphy was also priceless, not to mention the burial process being like a dog finding a place to hide his bone. The series now is set to end later than I thought according to PDiddie's link.

I saw a trailer for the new season. I know that trailers are not always the best indicator of what's to come, but I was left wanting the series to resume--NOW!

It looked good.

MY GUESS:

By the end of this season...everyone will come to despise Tony Soprano.

I think they will short-circuit all of the cuddly, personable stuff -- and turn him into a monster.
