Still looking for better links to this, but Matt Drudge is blaming the teenaged congressional pages for "egging the Congressman on".

How low will they go?

Now that the allegations are out, and the FBI investigation is in full swing, I might as well come clean.

I am Rep. Mark Foley, and I have been passing myself off as a twenty-something heterosexual in order to hide the ugly truth.

But I hate to leave you all without first making this proposition: if there are any fourteen year-old boys reading this, we could, if you want to, go cruising in my BMW. Maybe go to Outback and eat a Bloomin' Onion. Later I could give you a massage, and we'd just see what develops...

Rep. Foley Should Have Been Booted a Long Time Ago
Monday, October 02, 2006
By John Gibson foxnews.com

The Republican leaders of the House, Dennis Hastert and John Boehner, are going to end up taking the blame for the Foley caper because if they didn't know what Foley was saying to that page, they should have.

Here's why I say that:

What the hell are you talking about, Craven? His concern for children may have been genuine? This isn't necessarily about Republicans?

I've explained it pretty clearly dude. I think that his concern for protecting children from sexual predators may have been genuine. And I think the claims that there was a Republican coverup ignore some key facts (that I have already detailed).

I understand that we likely disagree on both counts but there's not much more to say on the subject.

How is this relevant?

It's not.

The relevancy is simply that this is nothing new. Especially in politics, where men in power have always been allowed quite alot of freedom to pursue their particular habits without repurcussion. Until recently.

Right. The conceits of dozens of cyberstrangers, and what "class" means to you, REALLY interests me.

That raises interesting questions.

There was, in fact, a whole culture supporting ephebophilia...which included, as I understand it, duties and oblligations of the older man toward the younger...thus he was a mentor and teacher.

Also, as I understand it, the ideal was NOT to have a sexual relationship, but to sublimate the feelings into a "higher" bond.

I had understood that Socrates was not supportive of the relationship becoming sexual...though one wonders about Alcibiades...... I do not know anything about Aristotle in this regard.

It also was not especially "men in power" who behaved thus, but mature men of the higher classes...especially as part of the warrior tradition. Of course, they were older and thus had a position of some power.

I do wonder what, if any difference, an honourable (think of the Theban band) cultural place for the emotion, if not the act, had on any damage done to the boys?

Modern paedophiles frequently attempt to use this tradition to justify their behaviour......but I think, in our culture, that this is self-serving bullshit...we would not use Athenian customs of slavery and subjugation of women to justify their resumption today.

In a sense, where the age of consent is placed is somewhat arbitrary, but in my view this arbitrariness is difficult to avoid, and worth bearing with for the sake of the wider good of discouraging sexual abuse.

I am not really sure that you can view ancient Greeks' behaviour through the same lens that we use today...for starters, young men were warriors at an age where our kids are mostly still schoolkids...and pages.

Lord...what a rant!

Well, well Finn name-dropping Hungarian Marxists in apparent praise - this sure has been an odd thread.

No nimh, not name dropping. That would mean I was insinuating I knew the man.

I know of the man...as a respected literary critic. That he was also Hungarian and Marxist seemed to make him a perfect selection for my purpose.

Yes, yes I know that our kuvasz is not actually a Marxist, but I enjoy when he defends his capitalist bona fides and maybe if he doesn't read this far he'll indulge me.

At last, the Republicrats are showing that they are the party of slime and corruption. There is a long line of pederasts connected to the Republican Party as far back at World War II. The Republicans are trying to smear gays by calling Foley gay. He is not gay. He is a pederast. Gays are not pederasts and are as faithful to thier partners are most married people.
Gays are not pederasts. Foley is not gay. He is a pederast. There is a difference.

Well, we can all forget the Foley matter. Rush says that it was just a Democrat set-up, who could care less about the pages. Matt Drudge says pretty much the same thing.

Dys, great research.

So many fanatic religious leaders preach hatred of sex and sin because they can't control their own urges. They hate females because they blame them for seduction. It's always the females fault, ain't it?
