There was also something else in that room. It was watching her and took pleasure in her naked body. She did not know that it was there. She also did not know that she was naked. If she had known that she was naked she would have ben very shocked. She was a proper young lady except for the colorful language that she had picked up from her father.

I want you to steal a body from the morgue.
She didn't say anything else.
She had very blue eyes. Even in the semidarkness of the car the blue was easy to see. Her eyes were staring at me. They waited for me to respond. ...
Sure, I said. If the money's interesting enough I'll have Abraham Lincoln's body on your doorstep tomorrow with the morning paper.
That was exactly what she wanted to hear. ...
How does a thousand dollars sound? she said.
For a thousand dollars, I said, I'll bring you a whole cemetery.

In those ancient long-ago days when I paid my rent, she was very friendly to me and used to invite me into her apartment for coffee and doughnuts. She loved to talk about her dead husbands, especially one of them who'd been a plumber. She liked to talk about how good he was at fixing hot water heaters. Her other four husbands were always out of focus when she talked about them. It was as if the marriages had taken place in murky aquariums. Even her husband who'd been hit by the train didn't merit much comment from her, but she couldn't say enough about the guy who could fix the hot water heaters. I think he was pretty good at fixing her hot water heater, too.
The coffee she served was always very weak and the doughnuts slightly stale because she bought day-old stuff at a bakery a few blocks away on California Street.
I'd have coffee with her sometimes because I didn't have much to do, anyway. Things were just as slow then as they are now except for the case I just got but I had saved up a little money that I'd gotten from being in an automobile accident and settling out of court, so I could still pay my rent, though I'd given up my office a few months before.
In April 1941 I had to let my secretary go. I hated to do that. I spent the five months she worked for me trying to get her in the sack. She was friendly but I barely got to first base with her. We did some kissing at the office but that was about it.
After I had to let her go, she told me to buzz off.

It was a minute before the hour of midnight. Miss Hawkline got up and put a lump of coal on the fire. The other Miss Hawkline poured Greer some more coffee. She was pouring from a silver coffee pot.

Everything had stopped momentarily while the Hawkline sisters were thinking about what to do next. It was an enormous decision for them to make.

If I had an answer to that then we could cure the beastly burden. It is spring my dear, and in the spring a man turns to springly things -

Awww, but Bill, it's Spring at the Salon too. Have fun golfing, but you know me, I'd rather play racquetball.

I suppose soon, the lawn will have to be mowed and the sprinkler system have to be fixed. Have you ever wondered why, every Spring, the damn strinkler system develops huge guysers and requires the services of your friendly, yet constantly delinquent sprinkler repair service?

Geeze ~ offer a bit of legal tender aquisition and the place erupts! Cool

Ok ~ instead of sitting at the track viewing darling horses <walking, confirmation, coat, height, weight, disposition, etc. > (Can anyone tell why I'm an advocate?) we just enter stats in computer and voila ~

Hoft and Hiama's Supercomputer will dance the data and print probable results and Dys <soon as he returns from brownie off-shore compression>
will herd the camels away with Oak riding shotgun <borrowing the dear Mrs' rolling pin>

Note ~ Can anyone tell me about an antique (?) Zippo lighter? The veneer gold plated with the words "Be Sociable, Have a Pepsi". Also contains a winding gear <plays an ornate tune> located on the back of the
lighter. Instead of flint, there's a material wick similar to the ones found on oil lamps. When the top of the lighter is removed <for refueling> the music components visible. Any info? Thanks

Stradee - have you tried posting on E-Bay? See what the Zippo might bring - you don't have to accept any offers you don't like. Meanwhile I managed to decrypt Oak's mystery message and can announce to Lola's Salon that Diane, riding darling purebred horsie, went off riding into the sunset!

Hi Hoft ~ thanks for the suggestion.

Not wishing to sell any antiques <mostly all family heirlooms> was curious knowing more about the item. Farmerman's Antique thread <hilarious, btw> gave me some terrific info regarding a set of Britannica's <first volumn printed 1768 ~ the llth volumn 1911>. Just thought maybe someone here had info regarding the lighter.

I'm really doing ok, thanks. Your concern appreciated ~

Stradee, you've got a kinky Zippo. I have 3 Zippos, a plain silver looking one, one with the stars and stripes and my faveorite one, that is a brass casing. And I have Zippo Wallpaper on my pooter. Whanna know where to get it from, huh ? Well you now how to get it Stradee , you just bend your fingers and type in the address. And they've got games and zippo history, and special editions , and collectors corner.

Hiama has been unconscious for two days, left in a back room of the monastery where he had a life enhancing experience. He managed to find his way to the Salon to find reams of screenwriters, ticker tape stock market reports, Hoft on her or rather his supercomputer working out complex projections and cash flows to establish a revenue generating scheme for Lola to pay the interest on the $200 million.

Lets say interest is paid at 4% on $200 million thats $8 million a year . So we need to sell 1 million copies at $8 each of Lola's life story- " The secret life of a New York High Society Spy " , the projections indicate break even by the fall of 2004. The marketing will be handled for North American continent by Stradee with Blatham as treasurer, Jespah will provide legal consel. The Europe rights have been negotiated with Octopus Books by HIAMA who has a few tentacles of his own.

Lola herself is busy watching all the frentic activity and nibbles Hiama's ear as much to make Diane and Visitor jealous as out of a need to be tactile at this precise moment, when her best efforts should be used in conserving her strength for the campaign ahead.

Olden pipes up " If all this works we can franchise Lola Salons throughout the world and include an English Pub section , that would be really popular ", BillW and Dyslexia nod in approval as they sink their pints of beer. Hiama raises a glass to the assembled throng " To Lola Enterprises and a fresh new beginning "

(yawn) ...what a lovely dream...Oh, look at the time! I've been asleep out here for four hours! And I forgot the sunblock!

(entering salon and seeing Hiama)

...YOU!!! You're back! And up to your old tricks, I see! Why, I oughta...

(Hiama crosses room to give Portentia a welcome kiss, hoping she will forgive him upon learning more about his life-changing experience at monastery.)

Don't touch me! Can't you see I'm sunburned?!

(turning to others) What's this about publishing a book? Lola's life story, you say? Well, Eth...I mean, Lola and I go waaaaay back. I suppose I shall have to edit.

Hiama is very pleased that Portentia has forgiven him, her kisses are like honey , her lips soft and yielding, he remembers how good they are together and linking hands they set about getting the editing room into good shape.

Olden is in the corner wit Stradee with the Zippo lighter appreciation society, hey thats a point if the Zipper appreciates in value enough could be another income stream to help with the finances.
