Bernie, the word "shitting" is mentioned in numerous places. Check out Google.

example:

defecation: the elimination of fecal waste through the anus

Do I see the word "PRINCETON"? Sounds important, Bernie.

I am certain, Mr. Miller, that most writers would use the word "defecation".

Most people who have graduated from High School would indeed use that word!

The use of the word "shitting" reveals a vocabulary that has not advanced beyond the fifth grade!

Crap.

Shitting is a damn fine old word, befitting any who are not full of false shame about normal and natural functions.

You are, of course, completely within your rights to have an opinion concerning the useage of the word-"shitting". Dlowan.

I can say without fear of contradiction that my wife or daughter would never use the word in a forum which is viewed by many people.

They would, I am sure, say that it is a matter of good breeding!!

Wikipedia
crap
Crap is either a slang or vulgar term meaning "poor quality" or faeces respectively. In its former meaning is also connotes inaccurate, of little factual substance, lies, hype, or quackery. It can be partnered with "bull" to enhance the power of the word. It is commonly used to express wonder or surprise where other words are too strong, as in "Holy crap!" instead of "Holy ****!"

The word is considered by some people to be a less offensive than **** which holds similar meanings. Some people find the word crap offensive, and will use the minced oath "crud" instead, as in "Oh, crud!"

Etymology
Contrary to popular belief, crap is not derived from Thomas Crapper's name. While Crapper lived from 1836 to 1910, the word is, in fact, much older. It is one of a group of nouns applied to discarded cast offs, like "residue from renderings" (1490s) or in Shropshire, "dregs of beer or ale", meanings probably extended from Middle English crappe "chaff, or grain that has been trodden underfoot in a barn" (c. 1440), deriving ultimately from Late Latin crappa, "chaff."

The word fell out of use in Britain by the 1600s, but remained prevalent in the North American colonies which would eventually become the United States. The meaning "to defecate" was recorded in the US since 1846 (according to Oxford and Merriam-Webster), but the word did not hold this meaning at all in Victorian England.

For a more detailed discussion of the myths, see the article on Thomas Crapper.

Derivative words
Crap's popularity as an all-purpose word has given rise to a number of derived words, including but not limited to:

crapola — noun, same meaning as crap.
crappy — adjective, meaning poor quality.
crappo — same meaning, in Spanglish.
craptacular — a portmanteau of crappy and spectacular
craptastic — a portmanteau of crappy and fantastic
Despite the word usually taking the form of either a noun or verb, some people use crap interchangably with its adjective form crappy. ex: My computer has a really crap video card.

Expressions
Most expressions involving the word "****" have equivalent expressions which substitute the word "crap". Other expression involving "crap" are:

crap out — meaning to break down or stop working.

You have potentially wounded the sensibilties of no lesser persons than Bernardogrottyasso's wife and daughter!

I am indebted to Ms.Dlowan's research. I take it that she indicates that since the word, "shitting" is listed in the Dictionary, it is a term which may be used with impunity in one's writing. I must demur. There are many terms listed in the Dictionary which are not used by well-bred people. Some of them are: Nigger, Fag, and Broad. "Shitting" is clearly a scatologial term. Note definition number four below:

sca·tol·o·gy (sk-tl-j, sk-)
n. pl. sca·tol·o·gies
1. The study of fecal excrement, as in medicine, paleontology, or biology.
2.
a. An obsession with excrement or excretory functions.
b. The psychiatric study of such an obsession.
3. Obscene language or literature, especially that dealing pruriently or humorously with excrement and excretory functions.

I am sure that some will hold that "Shitting" is a perfectly good term to use in writing. I am of the opinion that anyone using that term in their writing shows that they either have a very limited vocabulary or are obsessed with scatological functions as in 2. above.

Once again you have failed to perceive a crucially important difference. This time between the use of terms like "****" and those like "Nigger, Fag, and Broad".

May I suggest you ponder the words until you are able to determine the crucial distinction.

I have faith! I believe you can do it.

Once you have made this cognitive leap, you will see that your comparison is full of ****, as is your amateur attempt to pathologise.

Try harder, please, Italmassagrotto!

Your mark so far is a fail.

I miss the distinction-Ms. Dlowan--Perhaps you can enlighten me.\

I was under the impression, after your fine outline of the scatology of "shitting" that any word listed in the dictionary can be utilized by serious writers.

Perhaps we should change Nigger and Fag to

Niggard and Male Fellatio,

You are aware, of course, that a man who made a speech using the word Niggard lost his job because of his lack of "sensitivity"

You see, Dlowan, it takes all kinds!!

I have just received a note from a friend who is, unfortunately, suffering from Crohn's disease. He is furious at the repeated use of "shitting" on the Internet because it brings all the innocent sufferers of his disease into disrepute.

Those who sneer at his discomfiture are invited by him to replicate it with repeated dosages of emetics.

He says that they would never write the word--"Shitting" again!!
