When I was working at Planned Parenthood, there was this macho guy with
herpes. Over the course of 8 or 9 months he had come in with various girlfriends who all had contracted herpes from him. He never told any of these girls up front.

When he came in with girlfriend # 3, I was ready to brand him.

Don't even go down that road of asking.

---

I think, in general women are more trusting toward men and less
promiscuous (with exceptions), that's probably also the reason why
they are more devastated when contracting herpes from someone
not disclosing the disease.

NOt to mention the fact that because no one talks about or admits to herpes, that one feels like a second rate date.

When I had my driveway sealed in 1975 I had them seal my unit as well. Everything rolls right off it now and I only need it resealed every 7 years... burns a little but money well spent....

See? We can discuss it in an honest and adult way - no problem!

Snood, there is some good stuff and some bad stuff here......

So, I checked out the link Calamity posted about international herpes rates and it does seem that te rate is fairly comparable in most countries. 1 in 4, 1 in 5..... not a whole lot of variation (I eyeballed the numbers, I didn't actually calculate).

Reading with interest.

I can't remember the vaccine that the Bush administration was against, because it didn't go with the whole abstinence thrust (sic) of their preferred sex education policies. Was it a herpes vaccine?

Whatever it was, that or something else, I'd want sozlet to take it when she came of age.

For myself, I've hopefully gotten past those hurdles, but who knows. If I'm ever on the market again for whatever reason (hope not), I'd be interested in the vaccine for myself.

Definitely interested in it and support the idea in a greater-good sort of way.

Soz, was it a vaccine to prevent warts? I think that was most recently in the news. It's also a more needed vaccine since warts do cause cervical cancer. It works best when given to young women - girls really.

The one I was thinking of was Human Papilloma Virus vaccine:

Haven't found anything more recent than 2003 for the herpes vaccine yet (in trials at that point):

I caught that news when it was still in trials and posted a thread. Dunno what happened to it. I do know that it was failry successful, especially when, as I said a couple posts ago, given to girls of a young age.

It's about time that a more progressive administration is coming into office,
where monies are allocated to such health issues.

When I hear the term "progressive", I can only think of San Francisco politics.

Their gay and drug addicted "progressive" community isn't doing so well healthwise.

Best to keep it in your pants.

Quote:
"Abstinence is the best way to prevent HPV," says Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council, a leading Christian lobby group that has made much of the fact that, because it can spread by skin contact, condoms are not as effective against HPV as they are against other viruses such as HIV.

"Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a licence to engage in premarital sex," Maher claims, though it is arguable how many young women have even heard of the virus.

This stuff makes me sick.

Abstinence is one way to prevent HPV. Even if it is taken as a valid goal, however, it's been shown over and over that abstinence-only sex education plain doesn't work. If it's "try abstinence, but if that doesn't work out, here's what you need to know," fine. If it's "abstinence is the only way, period" it's stupidity bordering on criminality, especially in this sort of situation. If it's preventable with a safe vaccine... <shaking head>

The term progressive is not only pertaining to sex education and health
issues, it means that we should have a government that is open and
willing to address issues and problems of this millennium, not medieval
times. The Bush administration is clearly regressive in its way of thinking and law making.
