Conservative Craven:

I was interested in something you said a while back: " Lack of faith can be as oppressive as faith can be."

Can you expand on this, please?

Biblical proportions? You mean small and verbose and inaccurate?

Don't you find it personally unsettling that you liked him just fine until he expressed political views different from yours?

Don't you think it rather small to turn on a person just because they don't walk in lock step with your opinions?

Do you see how you are proving the point his experiment was testing? Have you noticed the dwindling conservative membership? Do you ever evaluate yourself, your comments, your behavior?

Do you realize you personify the qualities you have tried to pin on the dreaded conservatives?

Sure, an atheist can be as dogmatic and proselytize as much as a theist can. I have been guilty of acting that way both as a theist and as as atheist.

Quite possible, but you never insulted me until I took on an opposing political view.

It's actually been a while since I opened a Strauss book. But I've found that particular observation of his to be one of the most enlightening ideas I've bumped into.

I just want to fine a bunch of guys that dress alike and follow them around, or maybe take my shoes off, sit in a tree and learn to play the flute.

The truly sad part of this thread is not the "temporary conservative" idea, it's the oh, so trendy approach that everyone has about religion.

Craven, you are a leader, but you were not born that way...
I've seen this happen in my own family.

It becomes quite important still, to be accepted in the world of the patrician, and we all have fallen prey. Somehow, the Republican party has always been aligned with the wealthy...that has not changed.

"...there is, within us, and with sadness I have seen it in others, a cruelty borne by the stream of love...."

Huckster, you never need to delete anything. If you think that this thread sucks, then explain why. You have that right, and long may it be true.

I think craven's thread was very instructive. I doubt it has done much to bring the opposing sides together.

I agree with edgarblythe. It is a lesson to anyone willing to really pay attention.

Letty-- Curious about your 'trendy religion' statement. Would you mind explaining it?
