I actually got a bit scared when they asked Taylor to sing. I thought, "Oh no! He will sing and then they will tell him he is going home!" Whew!

I still say Taylor is an all around entertainer and not just a singer. That's what I like about him. I'm with you, Foxfyre. Though I imagine all three left standing right now will get some sort of record deal.

And Chris can definitely go on to a great music career as well. They'll all go on tour this summer and will have a great time, the Season 5 CD coming out in a couple of weeks will be a great seller. I can't wait for Elliott's first CD either....it will be phenomenal. But Taylor is still my pick for the winner of the competition.

He forgot most of the words!

The medley they all did was good though.

Ryan Seecrust is such a dick. I can't believe the way he broke the news to Chris. "Many people said you could be the next American Idol. You're going home." That is just unnecessarily cruel. No wonder everyone hates him.

I thought that was super mean too.

I mean, I can see saying that a lot of people thought you could be the next Idol....talking about something else. And then breaking the news. But he just lumped it all in like Kat was going home and then busted Chris right in the nuts with "You're going home tonight".

So now we are down to two geeky looking guys and a stunner with no ideas in her head.

Why does anyone vote for Catherine? (Not you, Kicky, you vote for her ass) She smiles through every song. What?

"Are you lonesome tonight?" Big grin. "Do you miss me tonight?" Silly ass grin. "Are you sorry we drifted apart?" Talent Contest Winner Smile.
She hasn't a clue about what she is singing about. (gack)

As for the others:

Taylor will wow them at Discoveryland where he should be working now.
goo'bye next, I hope.

Elliot needs to figure out what size suit he wears and stop looking like he just got goosed by someone. He can sing, he needs a producer with an ear.

Adieu Adieu
Chris will get more work in the business than any of the last three.
He's a harder worker.
=====

What kills me about this show is that early on contestants get slammed for picking songs that their grandmothers liked. One poor smuck sang Blue Roses a a Blue Lady, for chrissakes, yet here we are at the end of it singing what? Songs from a Guy who's Thirty Years Dead.

Jailhouse Rock? Is that present day top forty? Is that on anyone's IPOD?
Singing the Classics is what you do AFTER your career is gone. Ask Rod Stewart.

What the producers need to do is have a second parallel contest for SONG WRITERS. Okay, you're paired with Elliot, write him a tune for next week. OR the last four weeks of the competition the contestants have to present their own original material.

I will stop watching this show now.

Chris?
Gone?
WTF?

They are looking for main stream rocker/pop style artists, and Chris is it.

Im sorry, Taylor hicks just doesnt do it for me .

I agree with bear, his career should be in an RV park

besides that, he looks like he is constipated when he sings.
The faces he makes should be saved for behind bathroom walls.

ugh.
Evil or Very Mad

And Katherine is only there because she is the bubblegum pop cute that girls have to be to win.
Not because she has a real talent.

Granted, if she puts her mind to it and stops smiling like a newbie porn star, she can sing.
But for talent... actual SINGING talent, she doesnt belong.
Paris.. Mandisa.. ? Anyone?
that was a real talent.
But.. not the bubblegum pop look. Sadly

>sigh<

each year I am dissappointed .
Each year I watch a little.
The only time I wasnt upset / disappointed was when Ruben and Clay were going at it!
Love those two.
Love Clay more, even if he was a night club style performer. .

So now I'm left with rooting for Elliot, who I always liked the best anyway. Hope he wins, don't think he will.

I've been a singer for 16+ years. I've had training. I've been in various choirs both mixed and female only. I've done show tunes and I've done Requiem. I went to college on a singing scholorship and took music and vocal courses there. I can't say I am an expert but I can say that I've heard lots and lots of singers and learned quite about about singing.

I think Kat is a phenomenal singer. Except when she makes that twangy sound at the end of a phrase. I think she picked that up as a way to make herself sound more dramatic but it just makes her sound like a bad singer. It sounds like she's sliding her notes sometimes. If you can't hit a note outright, you slide to it and that's a sign of an untrained voice. You can tell when a slide is intentional and when it's there because it's easier to do than belting a note out.

I think she was the best female vocalist by leaps and bounds. I think that with some more training, she could be a great performer. She is beautiful and has a gorgeous voice. I think she'd do better doing something other than pop songs. Her duet with Andrea Bocelli was just awesome. How many people can say they could keep up with a tremendous singer like him? Even he was impressed, which I can imagine is hard to come by.

I think that Elliot has the best male vocals but he is a little underpolished so he may not win. And he has funny ears and teeth, which may keep him out of the top spot. Looks do count. Course, if he's up against Taylor, do people vote more for a crooked tooth smile or grey hair?

Elliot has a very nice voice, but I think it's very normal. It's soothing and pleasant. Nothing that makes me go "Holy Crap!". But that's what Idol is. It's a pop show. You don't want an opera singer as a the next Idol.

Taylor is a Vegas act, not a vocal star. Plain and simple. He can sing, but doesn't have that quality great singers have in their voice. Lots of people can sing. They do it every night in bars, Vegas acts and in little venues all over this country. Few people have that voice that just tears into you and makes you lose yourself in the sound. He is different, yes, and that has brought him this far. But I think he lacks the polished edge that great vocalists have. If he wins, I will be very disappointed because he is not the best one for the top spot.

Chris is your typical alt. rocker type. He is like every other alt. rocker guy out there and he's got a nice voice, but he lacks the personality that is needed for Idol. His personality is fine for a "rocker" but not for a pop star.

And he is obviously untrained in any way. He doesn't know how to breath. He often sings in his mouth and his stage presense is always the same: intense. I think that he will find his niche but I doubt he will be huge.

Just my 2 Cents

It was an astute 2 Cents 2 Cents though. Smile

As a long time choir director and very unpolished musician in a very musical family, Bella Dea's analysis I thought was pretty good. The thing that bugs me about Kat is that she has had years of training--her mom is a voice coach--and she still has no low register, gets screechy when she pushes the high register, and, as has been pointed out, she has had pitch problems three weeks in a row now. Flubbing lyrics at this late date is not encouraging either. Joe Nation also nailed an observation that she doesn't seem to be aware of what she is singing and her presentation is sometimes inappropriate. Otherwise she has a wonderfully pleasant voice any choir director would love to have, but I just don't see the star quality.

Elliott of the three finalists I think has the best natural voice and I won't be disappointed if he wins, but I also think he lacks that special something--call it star quality--that makes people get excited even before he sings.

Taylor has it. His voice is untrained--that can be easily remedied--but it is a true strong whisky tenor that is always on pitch and he lights up a stage--at least for some of us. He is as good as Elton John and better than Springsteen and most of his fans enjoy him enormously. I still think Taylor should be the Season Five American Idol.

(P.S. The reason the best songs these guys do are the old songs is that very little really good music with strong lyrics and memorable melodies has being written in the last decade or so.)

Wow, some really great comments. Bella, I agree with your analysis of everyone but Taylor. Yes, he is not the best singer, but he is the best entertainer IMO.

I can have a blast at a concert that the singer is only so so if they have the ability to draw in the audience and get them excited about the music. Taylor has that. I think if he makes the right kinds of records, we're all going to be very surprised. When he sings those fast songs, I'm up dancing in my living room. Just what any audience wants to feel.

I am also astounded at Katherine. Having a built in voice coach and she still can't quite cut it? I don't understand. I think she tries too hard to be beautiful. She doesn't have to try. She's gorgeous.

I think Elliott could be another Michael Bublais. He has the same quality voice and just needs the right music to show it off and polish it. He may be a bit geeky, but if used just right, that could be his hook.

I liked Chris. I'm not a real rocker but he really won me over with Suspicious Minds. It's my all time favorite and he did Elvis proud. I really believe if someone will take him under their wing he can be something. He really is an amateur when it comes to breathing and stage presence, just as you indicated, but there is plenty of potential there.

He didn't have to wait long - hours later he was offered a job with the band Fuel.
....
Then Fuel made its offer. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell made their pitch on the TV show ``Extra.''

``Chris, if you are watching, we've talked about this before, and if you want to entertain it again we'll take it and go,'' Abercrombie said.

The buzz around Daughtry for weeks has been that he could end up the band's lead singer. He performed the band's song ``Hemorrhage'' on a recent ``Idol'' show.

Well, we knew he'd get a gig some time but man, that was quick.

I do missing singing a lot. It's tough work though. People don't realize how physical singing can be and how much work it actually is.

I give these guys credit because they came here not really knowing how hard they'd have to work. They are probably all exhaused.

First offer, sounds pretty damn good after being booted.

What do you think he'll do? You're our resident rocker.

depends on if he already has a good entertainment lawyer and management.

He's crazy if he makes a move without both.

I still sing, but have no illusions about being good. Smile I'm no longer directing but sing in the church choir and occasionally with another group when they need a back up. The church choir is performing Schubert's "Mass in G" in a couple of weeks.....in Latin....which is the most ambitious thing I've attempted in awhile. It's going well though.

You are quite right, however. Lyrics enunciation, presentation, pitch, interpretation, breath control, and voice quality all have to come together and, for all but the rare natural talents like say Karen Carpenter, it is hard demanding work. And song choice is critical.

Personally I think both Chris and Kat peaked a few weeks ago and I have seen no discernable improvement in either since, plus the comments on the boards suggest many fans like their singing but think they're both one-trick ponies without a lot of versatility. After awhile they are boring. Elliott and Taylor, however, get better week by week.

Despite it all, Chris definitely can have a music career if that's what he wants. Any of them can. I wish them all well.

Anything can happen in the next two weeks.

Oh well. Chris is gone so it doesn't even matter to me who wins. I probably won't watch any more.
