Dodge? Not a chance.

Dodge this, ok? Go read that Atheists....Your Life is Pointless thread again. How many times were you guys told that some of us did not agree with it? Did it matter? No. But, what was important is that some of you were offended. That was the way you felt about it. None of us told you that you should not be offended by it. It was the way you felt.

Well, I am offended by this premise of this show. And you keep telling me I shouldn't be. It's just a joke! So, you are the ones telling me I am wrong. You are telling me that because all of you disagree I should change my feelings. Did I tell you to change your feelings?

That's fine. Like I said, I'm working on a premise for a show. I just hope you all find it funny. Just keep in mind all the things you are saying about how it's just a show. It's not real. Maybe it will be a hit.

And upset? Yes, I am. I'm not angry. I'm upset because none of you seem to understand that I have a great love and respect for God and when you make jokes about Him I know it hurts Him and that hurts me. If you can't or won't or whatever understand that, then I do feel sorry for you. No patronizing to it. I am sad for anyone that doesn't care they hurt someone for any reason especially when they have been told it hurts them and they continue to do it and seem to find enjoyment in it.

I didn't ask you to change your feelings. I knew it wouldn't do any good. Just tried to explain why you are wrong. There's a huge difference.

What, specifically, are YOU offended by in the summaries of the program?

Not sure why you're directing me to the atheists thread to review anything - I am a Christian, not an atheist.

What offends me is that the show is supposedly going to be portraying Christians involved in commiting what the Bible clearly defines as sin. A minister is supposed to step down if they have a problem like addiction until they are no longer engaging in that. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. Extra marital affairs are a sin.

In portraying a Christian family engaged in homosexuality, addiction, extra marital affairs, etc, it makes it look like it's ok to do these things.

Sorry ehBeth, didn't mean the literal you. I should have said it pertained to those that call themselves atheists.

The new show is a comedy?

I get the impression it is a drama where a priest faces real life problems. Maybe more problems than most priests face but nothing like the priest in Minnesota that committed suicide after being questioned about the killing of two people. (A court finding ruled that the priest had actually murdered the 2 to prevent the young man from coming forward with allegations of sexual abuse.)

In real life, priests don't step down. They usually hide their sins. Bishops move child molesters around. TV preachers cry and self flagellate when they are found to have consorted with prostitutes.

I don't understand how you get that a priest torn with doubt and facing those problems in a TV show equates to his condoning those actions. My God, priests and preachers deal with them EVERY day in real life.

parados,

The show is being advertised as a comedy. I find nothing funny about portraying a Christian family engaged in what are blatant sins. Don't see a single thing funny about it at all. But, that's me. If no one agrees with me, that's fine.

Lol! Like I said, you do not read things people say.

It is one thing to be offended, it is another thing to demand that you ought never to be offended and that anything which offends you ought not to be allowed.

Remember, I said you frequently offend me (and clearly others) but are we asking that you not be allowed to post?

This is, I state again, he difference.

You ask that censorship occur on the basis of what you personally find offensive, and offer no other rational reason and demonstrate no other harm.

It really is a simple concept.

One may be offended, but that is not the sole determinant of what others are allowed to watch.

dlowan,

I sometimes think that you and others are offended strictly by the fact that I am Christian and express those views. In expressing those views, I do not belittle you or what you do or do not believe in, do I?

This is the Spirituality & Religion Forum. This is the place to discuss issues related to spirituality and religion. So, if you are offended that I talk about this topic, dlowan, then wouldn't it be better if you didn't engage in the conversations if you are offended by me just expressing myself? I am not trying to be sarcastic or smart-mouthed, dlowan. But I really do try very hard to make sure I don't use words that will offend others. I do that because I don't think I have license to just offend because I can or that I have differing views. I know I am not perfect so I am sure others do get offended at times. When they tell me I have offended them, I try to work it out with them. That is me. That is the way I am. That is what I believe is right. (Chai Tea, please don't scream!) She hates that statement but it's just a truthful statement. It IS what I believe.

How many times do I have to say you (and others) that have your views and I have mine. That's the way of the world. I can surely agree to disagree and let it go without saying anything derogatory about what you do or do not believe.

But the very reason why the Bible defines sins is because believers commit them. Why do you find it offensive to make this conflict the subject of a TV series? After all, by showing that these things happen, the series isn't suggesting that they ought to happen.

Lol...told you you never really read stuff. Spirituality forum indeed.

One of the ways you offend me, MA, though overall I think you perfectly well meaning, and you DO try to work things out, is your blithe belief that you have reality cornered. Every now and then you remember to say "They're my BELIEFS"...but your language always betrays you. I have pointed out a number of times you have been very offensive right on this thread. Go read, and perhpas we can discuss stuff, ok?

Your consistent failure to address the ISSUES raised by others in favour of "you're all just mean to me" is also irksome.

Here is an example.

I have said to you as explicitly as I know how that your beliefs neither trouble me, not do I have a problem with your holding them.

I think them irrational and such, but hey, you think atheism is dumb, too. I WILL argue against your beliefs when you try to make them apply to others in ways that I deeply disagree with.

What I DO have a problem with, as I said as simply as I know how, is your desire to censor the expression of other's point of view.

Do you agree with me that part of living in a reasonably free and open culture is that we offend each other?

If you argue, as you seem to do, that what offends you as a christian ought not to be allowed to be expressed on media...then how do you argue against my counter proposal that, if that is how we are playing, that A2k ought not to be allowing you to express your views, since a number of people find them offensive?

I have argued that media CAN do harm, if it perpetuates a situation of meaningful discrimation against a particular group (like when christian idiots preach hatred and discrimination against gay people, or when racist idiots preach hatred against blacks) but you have not taken any opportunity to argue any situation of harmful discrimination against christians.

I don't think anybody is saying you have no right to be offended....like I said, we all find our beliefs offended in lots of ways constantly.

But you move beyond expression, to a demand for censorship.

Fine, you have a right to do that....but, this isn't a christian or anything else pat on the back and "right on sister..amen" site.

You propose censorship, people are gonna challenge you.

Heck, you propose ANYTHING, people will challenge you. This is the nature of this site. Get over it.

As I keep saying, howsabout addressing some arguments rationally, instead of just moaning?

Right. Same old thing. I need to get over it and not be offended that someone makes jokes about God. I need a thicker skin. If I offend, I address it. I do my best not to offend just for the sake of offending. Those are the ones I am talking about. And dlowan, do you believe there are none that offend intentionally? Be honest, dlowan, we both know there are those on these threads that intentionally offend others.

Where have I personally attacked someone's beliefs? Where have I called anyone a name? Where have I said I am trying to censor you. I ask for common decency and I get I am trying to censor. Good grief!

DLOWAN!

HOW'S THIS? I HAVEN'T EVEN WRITTEN THE STUPID SHOW EXCEPT TO ASK IF THE PREMISE STATED WAS CORRECT! I HAVEN'T SAID A SINGLE THING ABOUT I DIDN'T WANT IT AIRED.

I SAID IF THE PREMISE OF THE SHOW IS CORRECT, THEN I WOULD BE OFFENDED BY IT! I SAID I WROTE THE SHOW TO ASK IF THE PREMISE WAS CORRECT OR NOT!

Now, shall I type that a bit slower and maybe not yell?

I get the feeling that you are continually trying to censor people. You have indicated you want the show off the air...before it even airs episode one!

Anyone who doesn't agree with you sets you into a tizzy. My understanding of God and all that goes along with it, is that God knows certain people do not believe and certain people may make jokes. Now if there is a God, wouldn't this God like to see a program such as this one which NBC is about to send out over the airwaves? I believe God will take this as a positive move since we will at least be discussing Him/Her/Gender-Neutral and isn't that what God supposedly wants...for us as lowly humans to all discuss and talk about God? (as well as lead a good and decent life)

I SAID THE SHOW WOULD OFFEND ME. I DID NOT SAY I WANTED IT OFF THE AIR!

Stop putting words into my mouth. Trust me, I have no problem saying what I mean.

Sturgis,

I don't get in a tizzy when someone disagrees with me. I take offense at the words used to describe my beliefs or myself because of those beliefs.
