christian bashing on t.v.

Reply Wed 28 Dec, 2005 10:56 am
Someone started a tread yesterday about some new t.v. show that will depict some christians in a humourered manner and I nocticed a few of the more zealot types expressed severe angst at the prospect. Horesefeathers I say, just this morning I looked at the cable t.v. schedule here and noticed at least 15 stations that are 24/7 god with double that on sunday mornings. So it's what about 95% christian t.v. with complaints that ONE show might portray christians is a less than ideal light?
Get a life folks and then get a clue.

What pissed me off about the Christer networks on my cable menu is the fact that those networks pay to be on, yet I have no choice about whether they're on my menu.

A sweet deal for the cable company--they get dough from two directions!

I have always wondered if Benihana was an advertiser for Benny Han.

A show that pokes fun at Christians cant do anything worse than that which the Rev Dr Fallwell does in THE NAME OF Christianity. Hes a dangerous homophobic , bigoted buffool.

I'll have to take your word for it because I don't think I have ever watched or listened to him. I steer away from TBN

Get a life and then get a clue, huh? Oh yeah, Christians just love it when people make fun of them for what they believe. I mean afterall, Christians are just people right? But, their feelings don't count. Rolling Eyes

God forbid we say anything perceived to be sexist, racist, homophobic, etc., right? How quick are we then shown the error of our ways?

As a Christian, who loves the Lord, I don't find mocking Him or Christianity even slightly funny. I am sure God does have a sense of humor, but I am afraid He is not as laid back in His thinking that He finds sexual jokes in reference to Him even slightly funny, or the portrayal of a Christian family engaging in the things He said are a sin. I don't imagine that the things pointed out in the Bible that are sins in God's eyes are very funny to Him when they are used to mock Christianity.

And making statements like "a show that pokes fun at Christians can't do anything worse than that which the Rev Dr. Fallwell does in THE NAME OF Christianity", is nothing more than justifying a wrong. He's a dangerous homophobic, bigoted buffool in your eyes only because you don't believe in the laws of God IMO.

It is no more right to make fun of Christians for what they believe than it is to make fun of or ridicule anyone for anything they believe or are. But, it's okay for you (those that do it) to do it because afterall, Christianity is a choice? Rolling Eyes

Talk about double standards Idea

When there are groups in the world that have suffered far worse than being "made fun of" in recent history, I find this outraged sensitivity to satire rather amusing.

We live in a free country. If the worst thing that happens to your group is the occasional joke at your expense, you're doing OK.

(And, and I might mention, the more a person overreacts to satire, the more likely it is to continue...)

the mealy mouthed majority are discombobulated when the tables are turned ever so slighted. I fear the day they look in a mirror.

Not everyone considers those hours of Christian TV the same as some of you do. And dys and D'artagnan, your statements are just more justification for your behavior and nothing more IMO.

Let me ask you something, it has been pointed out numerous times that in the Old Testament God punished the generations to come of those that sinned. Well, quite a few of you seemed pretty outraged at that. Isn't that what you are doing now? Punishing the Christians of today for what Christianity has done over the years? And you wonder why Christians would be upset at this? You have been told over and over again that we are no longer under the laws of the Old Testament. But, yet you apply those punishments of the old laws to Christianity today. So, which is it? You want it the way it is in the Old Testament or you don't? You can't have it both ways.

I may be overreacting in your eyes, but not in mine. If all of Christianity kept silent and just let those of you who do not believe in it trash it the way you do, there would be no more Christianity, and I am sure that would please at least some of you.

Oh yeah, you are all very funny. God forbid a Christian would offend any of you, and all you do is laugh and make justifications for your behavior when we are offended. Rolling Eyes

Shall we go read the Atheists...Your Life is Pointless thread again and see just how offended some of you were at that?

IMO, one of the hallmarks of a mature adult is the ability to laugh at oneself, one's foibles, and even one's beliefs. IMO, a person who takes umbrage at a satirical view of their beliefs, has a very uncertain hold onto those beliefs.

Think about it. If one is so certain about one's beliefs, why would one be bothered if others did not agree?

dys,

I am not trying to change your beliefs. I have engaged in discussions just as you have.

If you are offended, you have made it known. When I am offended, I make it known.

Phoenix,

I am not uncertain in my beliefs one iota. I believe in standing up for what I believe in. I don't believe in letting anyone trash God, my Christian beliefs, or anyone else's beliefs.

If you can't understand that, I am sorry. I have a very high regard and respect for the Lord. Of course, I am going to be offended if someone makes fun of Him.

Just as I would be offended if someone made fun of a friend of mine.

dys- Over the years, I have met many whom, I characterize as, "The True Believers". These are people who have converted from either no religion to a religion, a religion to no religion, or one religion to another.

These folks, possibly having to prove something to themselves, take their beliefs to the level of absurdity. Any dissention is a threat to their egos, and they tend to lash out at anyone who would DARE threaten their concepts, and ruffle their equanimity.

I met Falwell once...a strange sort to say the least and at the time with an energy which seemed to reach out and grab right a hold of the people around him Many times since our meeting it has crossed my mind whether he would have behaved differently had he known at the time I was gay. This is several years ago mind you, at a time when he was not vocalizing his thoughts on homosexuality, still I get a chuckle when I remember how he grabbed my hand and pressed it between his two hands and with a great big smile told me it was people such as myself that made the world a better place.

I see it like this - the cable operator can put up any channel they want, it's your choice to click the channel, just about the same as tuning in a radio station on XM or Sirius(sp).

heck or even between choosing caf or decaf coffee or soda(pop) (coke)(pepsi(7-up)

very well stated Husker, I think that applies to the "christian bashing" show as well as others.
