It's a good thing you don't know where I live or you loving Christians might have killed my dog instead of insulting my wife.

I can't imagine why this comforts LTX, there's a conditional aspect to this that is anything but reassuring--personally, i know for a fact that i will never kill anyone because god, or anyone else, wants me to do so.

And why the hell are there two of the letter "s" in reassure ? ! ? ! ? It ain't exactly as though @ss is a root word of reassure . . .

One person makes a comment trying to make you think about what you had written and now you have all Christians wanting to kill your dog. Isn't that called paranoia?

Boy, you folks are sure "duking it out." But, then, that was the stated intent of this thread, wasn't it?

I totally agree with Lash and Snood and Momma on this.

The whole porn thing was sick and in extremely poor taste.

Edgar thought he was being cute or some such thing. Lash tried to show him how foolish it was and he and ehBeth get snooty with it. I don't understand how ehBeth can claim to be a Christian and not realize the implications of what was being said.

Tolerance is a two way street.

There's a lot you don't understand, Intrepid.

I do not claim to be a Christian. I am still a Christian.

My Christianity is not the same flavour as yours. That is clear. I do not like the type of Christian you present yourself as - but I am not going to say you are not a Christian or that you "claim to be a Christian". At least not today. Your "Christian" approach is testing my tolerance. Which I've often thought to be the intent of some of the more 'muscular' Christians who post here. It sometimes appears that posters like you and MoAn want only a certain type of Christian poster to self-identify as being Christian.

Ain't gonna happen.

You don't get to define my Christianity, as I don't define yours.

I'll just reiterate that if you define my comment as an "insult," and it is identical to the comment you made about Jesus, you knew it was an insult.

One is no worse or better than the other.

And, if ehBeth didn't attempt to define others' Christianity, they likely wouldn't question hers.

You know--these are good examples of dishing out and being surprised when it comes back around.

I was not trying to define your Christianity, ehBeth. I was just trying to understand it. I also don't expect everyone to be a Christian. I still respect those that choose Judism, Islam, Buddism etc. etc.

If some of us appear to be "muscular" Christians it is because, like you, our tolerance can be tested by those who not only disagree with us, but who treat us as less than themselves. Being a Christian does not mean being a doormat for people to wipe their feet on.

Thank you for your explaination.

On the contrary, as I've stated before when MA used this same phrase, it can be reasonably argued that being a Christians DOES mean being a doormat.

I have enjoyed the respite for the last day or so, while Christians were able to communicate with one another without rudeness and insults from atheists and agnostics.

It was rare.

I knew it wouldn't last. I just don't know why.

Wasn't trying to insult or be rude to anyone. So I'm unsure if this is directed at me or not. If it's not, I won't bother with an explaination. If it is, let me know.

for those like me who weren't previously familiar with the disagreement between Questioner & Momma Angel about the obligation of Christians to be doormats, the passage in question is Matthew 5:39. here's the English Standard Version:

Quote:
Matthew 5:39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

King James V. has the word smite in place of slap; other versions have the word strike. While Jehovah's Witnesses interpret the verse as prohibiting self-defence, they seem to be in the minority. here's an explanation i came across:

Quote:
Jesus specifically mentions the right here , even though a blow from a right-handed person would normally fall on the left cheek. This probably means that the blow is delivered with the back of the hand, since then it would indeed fall on the right cheek. We know for certain that such a blow was considered particularly insulting. The injustice that is willingly accepted here is therefore not so much a matter of body injury as of shame. (H.N. Ridderbos. "Matthew": Bible Students Commentary. Zondervan. p. 113)

so basically Jesus instructed his followers not to return insults. it doesn't preclude objecting to an insult, or defending others against insults. but that's just my 2 cents. i'm not even Christian, and Christians don't always agree anyway, as ehBeth pointed out.

How does one know for a fact what they will or will not do in the future?

Not particularly, even though that tends to be the afterglow of Christianity.
