I think I may understand snood's point -- he can correct me. While many gay people are not apparently gay -- can walk into a store and not have security guards tail them becuase of how they look -- black people have no such armor. They are apparently black at all times, and therefore are always subject to appearance-based prejudice -- they cannot choose when to announce their blackness and when not to. (The parallel, I guess, would be someone who could "pass".)

That said, I agree wholeheartedly with what dlowan has to say about the very real prejudice and oppression that gay people experience, and that the comparison (black and gay) is not a hollow one.
