We may have Winter licked. 50 degrees F @ 5:30 pm. It can certainly come back and bite us so my rule of thumb is not to plant annuals until Mother's Day...but I always cheat by a few weeks.
Many years ago a friend of mine who worked for a nursery gave me a plant which I know only by the common name of "Saucer Magnolia." It's now 16'
tall and is covered with pink and white blooms. It's not really suited for this area. It flowers too early and they turn to a brown mush when hit by March cold.
This year, though, it is stunningly beautiful.
Happy Spring!

It was blowing a blooming gale here, today.

It blew over some high-sided vehicles on the motorway and closed the road for a long time.
Luckily I was going the other way.

More high winds are forecast for tomorrow.

We'll be headed to Japan on Thursday, and it seems the weather in Osaka will be in the low sixties. We're expecting rain on the day of our arrival, but it should be sunny from then.......

McTag...I run the BBC's ticker at the bottom of my screen showing headline stories...one of which just came across as "gale force winds batter England."
I hope things are okay tonight.

Well, realjohnboy, things are relatively okay here. We had some very high winds and I had to go out with hammer and nails to fix a bit of our fence which had blown down.

Elsewhere, I saw on the TV that some people had been killed in the Norfolk area when trees were blown down and hit moving cars.

There was a lot of storm damage to roofs, countrywide, and power lines were down in exposed areas. There were a lot of traffic accidents in Yorkshire, too.

Forecast for tomorrow, winds abating to average 30mph (= 48kph).

Good grief..

All I want is a room somewhere,
Far away from the cold night air,
With one enormous chair,
Oh wouldn't it be loverly.

Lots of chocolates for me to eat,
Lots of coal making lots of heat,
Warm face, warm hands, warm feet

Oh, wouldn't it be loverly.

Cool

Ah, I remember those gale force winds from long ago ... used to scare the hell out of me as a kid! Of course, the trees always looked so ominous with the rain pelting the windows and we knew the banshee was right outside our door, waiting to rip us up:)

Yup, it's windy here, too. We are not too far away from the Black Forest. Three more weeks to go and then it's Florida weather for us!

friday was a beautiful day here in eastern ontario. mrs. h and i took a drive along lake ontario, had a nice lunch at a country-inn and went for a walk through the sand-dunes along the lake ontario. lots of ducks bopping around in the waters, some canada geese swimming along majestically. even though there was still ice along the shoreline, it was wonderful to smell the fresh breeze off the lake. .... this sunday morning we slept a little lake ... looked out the window at about 8:30 am ... SNOW !!! tonight the low is forecast at MINUS 15 C ( 5 F ) - YIKES ! is this spring ? hbg

walter : reminds me of listening in on a tourguide for a group of german tourists being shown around niagara falls in the fall. the tourists where ooing and aaing; the tourguide (she must have been form berlin ! ) said : "yes, it's nice now ,but 'arschkalt' in the winter." husiasm dropped rapidly ! hbg ... we seem to have finally broken winter's spell - for the next several days anyways -; it's well above freezing, birds are busy, lots of ducks stopping over on lake ontario - they seem to find plenty of fish and (zebra)mussels to feed on - on their way to the arctic.
