As for travel, I have been to Hamburg... in 1963, I think it was. I was a student. We stayed at the youth hostel at St Pauli, not far from Bismark's statue.

Have been at the very same place [#Stintfang'] the very same year.

But: Bismarck statue? One tube station away from the Starclub (and a lot more for 18+ Laughing ), hundreds of steps from the Landungsbrücken (and the pubs there - looked old enough Laughing ), I obviously missed the Iron Chancellor

Well, he's a very big chap, and hard to miss.

Memory can sometimes play tricks, but I seem to remember our Jugendherberge ganz in der Naehe vom Bismarkdenkmal war. Ist.

Oder?

Cold here today, -7deg C in the morning.

Blue skies, sunny all day.

The edge of the Dales, by Glossop, where I was today, looked fine, with some snow in patches still on the ground, in shady spots.

WEATHER OR NOT ?
hello jazzfriends ! how easy it is to get from jazz to the "iron chancellor ! as for walter not recognizing the tall fellow, i suspect, walter deliberately ignored him, you can see him (the iron chancellor, not walter) here >>> http://www.lostplaces.de/bismarck/ . i believe there was a rather "uneasy" relationship between bismarck and the catholic church(or was it the other way around ?) in the 1870's ; perhaps this is the reason for walter trying to push bismarck into the background (?). i'm sure on his next trip to hamburg, walter will want to pay homage to the iron chancellor. btw. on our last visit to hamburg i picked up a used copy of "auf otto von bismarcks spuren ", loosely translated "on the trail of otto von bismarck" , for 5 euros. it is a lavishly illustrated volume with some interesting caricatures of bismarck from the 1870's (from the magazine "figaro").
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i started school "just around the corner" from the rather imposing monument. the school was opposite the ENGLISCHE KIRCHE (english church - i would imagine that it is anglican. apparently it was founded about 1400 by a group of MERCHANT ADVENTURES and still stands in the same location , at the ENGLISCHE PLANKE). i'll try to insert a picture of the school and church here. the school is in the centre of the pix and the english church is the building on the left with the greek columns; if you go to ZEUGHAUSMARKT I you'll see the frontal view of the ENGLISCHE KIRCHE. walter : i have heard of the cotton club in hamburg, but have never visited there - perhaps on my next visit ? thanks for the pix ! hbg >>> ENGLISCHE KIRCHE

Loverly, my brother was born in Hamburg and I in Frankfurt - but, left when I was one. So no memories except for the alcohol enduced fog I lived through for a month of vacationing travel in 1983. It was September and preping for Octoberfest, or is that Beerfest. I got the feeling they are always preping Cool

Misti,
I remember a visit to Boca Raton in August. Much of the time was spent sitting in a shaded pool, floating in a foam device, with a drink in our hand.
Although My wife grew up in the south, neither of us can cope with temps over ninety.

As for alleged "dry heat", a friend who spent some years in Dallas used to say "Everyone knows that 90 degrees is twenty degrees hotter than 70 degrees.
But not everybody seems to know that 110 degrees is twenty degrees hotter than 90 degrees." And, insufferable, no matter how dry.

I guess it's mainly where you grow up. During my Air Force days, I was stationed in Texas and Central California. You could plan a picnic three years in advance and rely on it being a sunny day.
Boring!

Most of us who live from about Minnesota to the eastcoast like the four seasons and especially Fall. The fall colors are almost reverential. Newspapers print the progress of the colors. People go on bus tours to avoid having to drive and be distracted.

I want to add that I'm glad for you and your ideal weather.
I hope this gives you a different perspective.

billyf: I understand completely how you feel ... there are lots of people who cannot tolerate 90F weather, then there are us who cannot tolerate weather below 50F.

Yes I would agree where you grow up has a lot to do with it. I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and grew to hate cold, rain, fog, mist, wind ... so what's left? Sun, heat, warmth, balmy breezes:) I just love it!

As far as giving me a different perspective, I've lived in that, and didn't like it ... so believe me, it is a matter of personal preference.

I love to see the fall colors too, they are spectacular ... so thankfully I have lots of relatives up north to visit in the fall.

Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

We have fall colors in Silicon Valley where the leaves turn bright red, and all the colors in between. I'm gonna take a picture next year, and show them on A2K.

Weather

Walter, I'll be travelling to Latvia and Lithuania in April. What kind of weather should I expect? Thanking you in advance, Billy Falcon.

Cicerone, The fall colors in northern CA sound beautiful! Four summers ago, I finished visiting all 48 states: nothern california (I had lived in the southern half), Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming , Colorado and the Dakotas. The great northwest was great! Alaska this August.

billy falcon -- what will you be doing in Latvia? Just curious as I am a native Latvian, though a US citizen now. If you need an interpreter, I'm certified as such by the US Dept. of State.

I went to school with a boy whose mother was from Latvia, who married a Scot after the war.
I remember when Billy joined our class, his mother asked the teacher if he could read to the class from a book in her native tongue, because she had raised him to be bilingual. We would be about eight years old. I don't remember what he said. She was a very colourful character, of good appearance, and dressed well. This was in the 1950s. Billy was a nice lad, I knew him for years.
